Dong Sung has recently added a feather to its cap after the successful development of a CFRTP technology for the production of light weight composite material, which is suitable for the automotive industry.
The South Korean company, which specializes in composite materials including basic petrochemical, polymer and precision chemical materials, consists of five business pisions such as two production facilities in Ulsan and Yeoso, as well as polyurethane, precision chemical and petrochemical pisions. Moreover, Dong Sung has acquired Doha industry, a Korea company that supplies farming machine, automobile, and aircraft. The company claims that the agreement reinforces its portfolio of lightweight materials for both the automotive and aircraft industry.
The newly developed CFRTP technology can form key industrial parts within one minute by impregnating high strength carbon fiber into thermoplastic resin compound through the high speed, high performance system of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastics. Considering that the technology does not need long-time curing process, it can help produce uniform CF composite sheets without a void space and is an effective method for the mass production of thermoplastic/carbon fiber composites.
In order to commercialize these products for automotive applications and other markets, the process should have a high cycle speed for the press molding. It offers benefits such as flexible design and recycling.
In a statement, a Dong Sung official claimed that they could reduce the weight of automotive parts through CFRTP technology. He added that they anticipate its application to all industries related to composite materials such as automotive, construction and aviation materials.
