The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has announced that it will be imposing anti-dumping duties on truck and bus tires that are imported from China into the USA. The decision was made in view of preliminary findings that these tires were being dumped in the US tire market at rates that were much lower than market rates. The Chinese government was also found to be unfairly subsidizing the companies involved in the manufacturing of these tires.
These antidumping duties will vary between 20.87 per cent to 22.57 per cent. An anti-dumping rate of 20.87 per cent has been imposed against Prinx Chengshan, which is one of the two companies that were the mandatory respondents in the investigation. The second company, Double Coin will pay a higher rate of 22.57 per cent that will be applied on a China-wide basis.
When the countervailing duties that were announced back in June by the Department of commerce for tires in the same category are also taken into account, the total duty for bus and truck tires imported from China could go up to 40 per cent.
The Department of Commerce will announce a final decision on the tariffs by at least January 17, 2017. It was initially said that a decision would be announced by November 10. But this has been extended further by a period of two months. The final decision will be made on the basis of an investigation by the US International Trade Commission as to whether the domestic tire industry in the United States is being affected.
