Nexen Tire has opened a major research facility called ‘The Nexen UniverCITY’, at the Magok Industrial Complex in Seoul. Over the past two years, the leading tire manufacturer has KRW 200 billion to develop ‘THE Nexen univerCITY’ which sprawls over 57,000 square meters with eight floors above and two floors below the ground and comprises research and business complexes.
The center has been conceptualized as an open innovation environment for optimal concentration and teamwork. Some of the innovations that have been incorporated for the development of smarter technology include a research and development (R&D) center that can predict and implement optimal performances such as OE/RE product manufacturing, AI technology and virtual tire technique, a performance research center where the performance of tires and vehicles can be assessed, and a material research center for analyzing diverse nano and macro dimensions on various materials.
Through the establishment of such facilities, Nexen Tire plans to ramp up its R&D capabilities in order to respond quickly to the rapidly changing market and to cater to specific requirements of the local and global automotive industry. The Magok Central Research Institute will also act as an R&D hub for Nexen’s local and global R&D centers that are located in Yangsan, Changnyeong, Germany, the Czech Republic, U.S., and China.
‘THE Nexen univerCITY’ combines the concept of ‘Nexen Universe’ and ‘City’ and exemplifies Nexen’s core values – Challenge, Creativity, and Collaboration as well as its business philosophy that displays the infinite possibilities and values that Nexen can accomplish.
Commenting on the new research center, Travis Kang, Global CEO of Nexen Tire said that the Magok Central Research Institute really defines Nexen Tire’s growth DNA and its identity that has made it possible for the company to grow faster than any other company in the world. Nexen plans to play a key and global role and shift the paradigm in the tire industry by creating new changes and future values that no one has seen before.
