Aiming to help automakers guard against zero day attacks, cybersecurity company Symantec has unveiled an innovative Internet of Things (IoT) solution.
Called Symantec Anomaly Detection for Automotive, it uses machine learning to offer passive in-vehicle security analytics that oversee all controller area network bus traffic without interrupting vehicle operations. The solution also enables users to learn what normal behavior is and flag any atypical activity that could determine an attack.
Symantec Anomaly Detection, which works well with any automotive make and model, promises to help carmakers learn the vehicle’s behavior in a better way, enabling them to see earlier unnoticed attacks. It prioritizes incidents depending on perceived risk and criticality, and spots anomalies without the need for manufacturers to develop policies and establish rules.
Symantec reveals that the solution utilizes minimal memory and CPU power with analytics solution built from the ground up for vehicles.
According to Symantec senior director of product management and engineering Shankar Somasundaram, automotive security threats have gone from theory to reality. He says that Symantec is bringing the world’s most comprehensive portfolio of security technologies to the car, adding that the infrastructure and technology that already helps protect billions of devices and trillions of dollars now protects the car. “We’re building long-term comprehensive security all while delivering ground breaking protection for cars today.”
