Toyota might have discontinued the Scion brand. But there is one model, the flagship of the Scion brand, the Scion FR-S, for which the Japanese auto manufacturer has big plans. The model which is also known as the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ, or the Toyota GT86, depending on the market it is sold in, is undergoing a makeover. Its 2017 edition will be distinctive for its stiffer suspension and Brembo brakes, in keeping with its current image as a youthful, sporty coupe. Affordability, sportiness and youthfulness were the three core characteristics of the Scion brand and these will still be seen in this model, with the revamped model possibly being even sportier.
This was confirmed by Toyota’s Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada. He said that the optional Brembo brakes already available on the BRZ, and Sachs suspension will be used in the 2017 edition of the 2017 Toyota 86.
The Sachs suspension will be built and tuned in-house with Toyota using what it has learned from its foray into motorsports from the race-spec GT86 CS-V3 car that proved to be the winner of the V3 category at the Nürburgring 24h. The main emphasis will be on replicating the body stiffness and rigid balance that is normally obtained through a rollcage.
With regard to the performance aspect, the car will be more powerful and will have a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine which will have an output of about 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque, as compared to 197 hp and 151 lb-ft, respectively in the previous version. Thus, though the Scion FR-S will now be transformed into a proper Toyota, it is going to get more powerful and better.
