Qualcomm has unveiled a new chipset for OEMs that is going to transform the concept of connected vehicles. Called the Qualcomm 9150 C-V2X chipset, the product will be available in the second half of 2018. The C in the name stands for cellular and it will work with both the current 4G and emerging 5G networks. V2X or Vehicle-to-Everything means that the chip uses 5.9GHz V2X protocol to connect to everything outside the car including other cars, traffic lights and even the people on the road. The C-V2X chipset comes with a built in global navigation satellite system. The C-V2X reference design indicates that the chipset can be paired with an application processor that runs its Intelligent Transportation Systems V2X stack and a hardware security module.
Nakul Duggal, VP of product management at Qualcomm said that C-V2X can work in tandem with the move towards 5G and with telematics systems. Hence, it would be of immense benefit to the automotive industry as it can contribute towards development of new capabilities for improving road safety and enhancing autonomous driving and advanced connected services. It will also leverage on the ITS expertise and advances that have been made over the past ten years.
He added that C-V2X is expected to increase productivity, improve road safety and decrease traffic congestion. The age of the connected car has already arrived and Qualcomm is getting a head start with the potential for combining V 2X into the cellular modems that connected cars will already have.
