Honda took centerstage at the LA Auto Show with the new Precision Cockpit in its Acura. A treat for gadget fans, the Precision Cockpit fuses AI and Android technology to provide customers with greater convenience. The Precision Cockpit comprises not just an advanced incar infotainment system but also includes cabin elements like the steering wheel and the seats which have been thoroughly modernized to give visitors a preview of what future Acura models will look and feel like inside.
When it comes to the appearance of the cockpit, the two 12.3 inch display panels act as the centerpiece of the cockpit. While one panel is in the driver’s line of view and is located where the dials would normally be, the other is located right above the central stack. The built-in 3D engine transmits images of adjacent cars, pedestrians and cyclists to the display units, even those which cannot be seen using the mirrors. In the Precision Cockpit, an array of onboard sensors and artificial intelligence is used to determine the projected path or paths of other people and objects on the road so that you get an idea of anything that is likely to cross the path of the vehicle. This will significantly enhance the safety quotient.
The central display has a panel similar to those in other high-end vehicles, with buttons for infotainment options. In the central stack, instead of a physical remote or a jog dial, what you get is a curved touchpad, which is mapped pixel to pixel with the central display. Acura calls this “absolute positioning meaning that every point on the touchpad corresponds to precisely the same point on the screen.
Honda has already used the AcuraWatch suite of safety systems in as many as 70,000 vehicles. With the debut of the Precision Cockpit, the use of artificial intelligence in automobiles will be taken to the next level. The company might also possibly integrate the autonomous and semi-autonomous features with the user controls. The company however did not disclose the timeline for the introduction of the Precision Cockpit in production models just saying that it will be implemented “in the next few years.”
