HARMAN has recently reached another milestone after making an open source software contribution to the Open AVB project to help steer the acceptance of Ethernet AVB/TSN (Audio Video Bridging/Time Sensitive Networking) in automotive, pro audio/video, consumer and industrial markets. The technology now has key enhancements to the AVTP (Audio Video Transport Protocol) data pipeline and targets the modernization and preparation of the connected car with flexible, scalable and secure in-vehicle networking technology while meeting a growing need for reliable communication in the vehicle.
Ethernet AVB promises to provide a highly reliable solution. The replacement of the physical intricacy of analog cables and the network intricacy of earlier proprietary solutions paves the way for AVB to bring an open and standards-based approach that helps interoperable platforms to provide more affordable yet better market solutions.
Supported by the AVnu Alliance®, a community that creates an interoperable ecosystem of low-latency, time-synchronized, reliable networked devices utilizing open standards through certification, the Open AVB project offers vital network building blocks, libraries, drivers and example application best practices for establishing AVB/TSN systems.
In a statement, Gary Stuebing, AVnu Alliance Board of Directors President, explains that the Open AVB Project, with contributions from AVnu Alliance members, will offer manufacturers with the required components to confidently incorporate AVB/TSN into products and eventually pass AVnu certification tests. He adds that these contributions help speed up a wider ecosystem of AVB/TSN devices across different markets. “Our mission is to help facilitate that ecosystem and certify devices for interoperability.”
Since the establishment of AVnu Alliance, HARMAN has been dynamically contributing to its working groups and projects. This most recent contribution targets to enable and provide for a fully functioning, feasible open source software stack that is crucial for the development and testing of Ethernet AVB products.
According to Dean Miles, Senior Vice President, HARMAN Connected Services, they believe that open source software is the foundation of developing innovative technologies, and they are proud to contribute to the Open AVB project with their advanced open source software. “In doing so, we hope to bring the global auto industry more closely with the larger networking community and to make modern vehicle networking technology more quickly available to the connected car.”
