Dymag, a premier British wheel company that developed the first-ever carbon composite wheel to BS and SAE standards, has unveiled its new lightweight carbon composite wheel at the recently concluded SEMA 2015.
The roll out came hot on the heels of the company’s announcement that it has bagged £7.1m UK government funding, which would enable the company to realize its goals to considerably reduce production process cycle times and to achieve high volume production of carbon composite car and motorcycle wheels for the first time from a purpose built site in the UK.
The new wheel—which is normally 40 percent lighter than an equivalent OEM aluminum alloy wheel of the same size—comes two decades after the company first launched commercial production of carbon composite motorcycle wheels, and over a decade since it rolled out the world’s first carbon composite auto wheels that are safety tested for street use.
Thanks to government funding, Dymag has also been established as a Tier 2 level member of the National Composites Centre, a collaboration that will see the British company tie up with the UK production center of excellence for composite products to develop its volume production process for lightweight carbon composite wheels.
According to Chris Shelley, the new wheel denotes a huge step forward in terms of quality, performance and the future ability to manufacture wheels reliably in higher volumes – employing all the knowledge and experience they have built up over two decades of making robust high quality carbon composite car and motorcycle wheels tested to international standards.
He explained that all Dymag lightweight carbon composite wheels would be certificated for road user and would be available for use in track day and racing applications, as well as premium OEM applications, tested to the most extreme loadings in the automotive industry. “These are exciting, game-changing times for Dymag as the funding investment enables us to focus on developing high volume carbon composite auto and motorcycle wheels for a wide range of performance and luxury vehicles using advanced production processes and materials.”
Shelley concluded that they intend to establish one of more long term strategic production partners in the UK and abroad to help continue to scale up and develop the business globally close to their customers.
