Daimler has recently confirmed the production expansion of its twelve-cylinder V12 biturbo engines at its manufacturing plant in Mannheim, Germany. The automaker made the move due to huge customer demand for its high-performance automobiles featuring the engine, which is fitted in cars including Mercedes-AMG G 65, SL 65, S 65, and S 65 Coupe.
Daimler emphasized that it will continue with AMG’s “one man, one engine” philosophy, and engineers involved with the assembly of the twelve-cylinder engines at the AMG headquarters in Affalterbach will be shifted to the eight-cylinder engine lines. The automaker has thoroughly trained its employees from Mannheim in Affalterbach for the new task that lies ahead of them. It mulls to expand the production of V8 engines in Affalterbach.
Meanwhile, the Mannheim plant will be renovated in order to keep up with the expansion. It will also have a separate assembly line for the V12 engines from AMG.
According to Mercedes-AMG chairman Tobias Moers, due to the strong demand for their automobiles, their production capacities at the Affalterbach engine production plant are fully utilized. He said that supplying their customers as fast as possible is highly important to them. “We do not have any possibilities for expansion in Affalterbach at present, so we have decided to transfer the assembly of the twelve-cylinder engines to the Daimler site in Mannheim.”
Production of the powerful V12 biturbo engines at Mannheim is anticipated to kick off in February 2016.
