Aiming to keep pace with the tough competition in the automotive arena, ContiTech has recently developed what it claims as an extremely flexible high-temperature hose with external reinforcement for truck and off-highway applications.
Its flexibility enables it to be used even in cramped and complicated installation situations—and that comprises the extremely high temperatures encountered there. Depending on the finish, the hose effectively withstands temperatures of up to 250°C, thus making it perfectly ideal for use in extremely hot environments such as Dubai. It supplies the turbocharger with cooling water and lubricating oil, and is also utilized in its control system. Moreover, the new hose can be used to transport air in, for instance, exhaust systems such as a fuel return line or a diesel particulate filter.
ContiTech’s new hose owes its flexibility to a special braid made of a plastic textile, which is resistant to chemicals and high temperatures. This encloses the inner lining made of a rubber adapted for the application which is highly stretchable. The company says that the tight bending radii which are possible as a result are a perfect response to the growing trend towards downsizing in engines and the associated more congested installation spaces.
Lightweight Construction Reduces Environmental Impact
Due to its lightweight design, this new hose also has huge weight advantage over the PTFE pipes enclosed in a stainless-steel braid used previously for these tasks.
According to Klaus Brühne, who was responsible for the development of the hose, it contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption and hence, also CO2 emissions.
The beauty of the hose is that it withstands operating pressures of up to 15 bar and can also be produced as a molded hose or for sale by the meter. Moreover, a kink-resistant version is possible.
Brühne adds that another benefit of the hose to the customers is that it is part of a modular package from which the user can choose the right product for the specific application. “This yields further cost benefits for him.”
