Continental Manufactures Medical Hoses for Healthcare Sector

Leading technology company Continental has started manufacturing hoses for the healthcare sector in Bergamo and the Lombardy region at the company’s manufacturing facility in Daverio, Italy. Though Continental had tapered down production at the factory due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the company was specially requested to make batches of medical hoses for these regions which are badly affected by the spread of the disease.

Continental thus temporarily restarted a production line to fulfil the special requests and supply the hoses to the medical sector. The move will serve as a critical contribution to all the healthcare workers who are putting their lives at risk by providing badly needed treatment for Covid-19 patients in Bergamo and Lombardy.

Commenting on the contribution, Marco Tamborini, the manager overseeing Italy-based production of thermoplastic hoses at Continental since Merlett was acquired by Continental in 2019 said that all of the caregivers are providing essential and vital services during these challenging times. The hoses made at the factory are meant to be used for the transportation of air and various medical gases needed in healthcare applications. One example is the use of such hoses for easy suction of gas into respiratory equipment such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system to provide support for the spontaneous breathing of a patient.

Reliable supply of medical assemblies for the Italian healthcare sector
Continental made the gas transfer solutions for its customer, Flow-meter, a company based in Bergamo which specializes in devices for measurement, control and supply of fluids. Begamo province in the region of Lombardy has been badly affected by the novel corona virus disease.

Roberto Paratico, CEO of Flow-meter said that in the past few days, his company has received many expressions of gratitude from the hospitals that it has served. According to him, the supply of such equipment would not have been possible without the assistance of reliable partners like Continental. The local healthcare facilities are highly dependent on a continuous supply of medical applications for the proper treatment of patients.

Hose solution for anesthetic and respiratory equipment
Continental’s supply hose for medical gas is a PVC hose made of a polyester yarn reinforced with a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) conductive underlayer and a polyurethane (PU) intermediate adhesive layer. It can be used for the transport of air, oxygen, nitrous oxide, helium and carbon dioxide.

“Going forward, we will have a strong focus on manufacturing medical hoses for the European healthcare sector – especially during these days, when the medical and social need for medical equipment used in respiratory diseases is so extremely high”, said Tamborini.
