BorgWarner has reached another milestone after being chosen as the official supplier of electric auxiliary thermal coolant pump (ATCP) for an SUV built by a leading Chinese automaker. Boasting a brushless, no-leak, low-noise design with integrated microcontroller, the ATCP offers a constant coolant flow through auxiliary circuits even when the engine is shut down, enabling auxiliary components maintain the best operating temperature and contributing to longer component life, lower emissions and enhanced fuel economy. In this application, a 100-watt ATCP helps in turbocharger and indirect charge air cooling.
BorgWarner’s ATCP drives the flow of coolant through auxiliary coolant circuits to help sustain optimal temperature for auxiliary components when the engine is shut down as well as during normal vehicle operation.
Daniel Paterra, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Thermal Systems, explained that turbocharged vehicles utilize an auxiliary pump to enhance cooling efficiency. He added that vehicles featuring stop/start systems benefit from an auxiliary pump to sustain cabin temperatures when the engine shuts down. “Electric and hybrid vehicles benefit from an auxiliary pump to improve driver comfort and keep batteries at a constant temperature to maximize driving range. BorgWarner’s ATCP supports all of these powertrains.”
Paterra continued that BorgWarner is honored to offer engineering and localized production from their campus in Ningbo, China for a growing number of carmakers.
BorWarner’s family of ATCP is designed for various automotive and commercial vehicle voltage ranges to support wide-ranging small- and medium-flow applications. When the engine runs, an integrated microcontroller communicates directly with the engine controller to sustain top speed for engine conditions, from 0 to 100 percent depending on the application. Meanwhile, when the engine is off, the ATCP transmits heat to a heater core to ensure that auxiliary systems function at optimal temperatures. With an enhanced brushless DC motor and floating rotor, ATCP offers outstanding performance with extremely low noise. Its cutting-edge no-leak design does not need a face or lip seal, thus eliminating a high-wear component for enhanced durability.
