BorgWarner has truly come a long way, and now, the automotive supplier is setting its sights in Korea. It is expanding its engine timing business in the country by supplying advanced cam torque actuated (CTA) variable cam timing (VCT) technology for Kia and Hyundai vehicles powered by 3.0- to 3.8-liter V-6 gasoline engines. The company’s CTA phasers with mid-position lock technology respond faster than conventional VCT systems and enable greater valve timing control over a wide range of engine speeds.
Joe Fadool, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Morse Systems, said in a statement that apart from fast phasing, BorgWarner’s CTA technology features their mid-position lock innovation for more refined engine calibration and an integrated center bolt for easier assembly. He added that they are thrilled to expand their business with Kia and Hyundai with the enhanced engine efficiency, performance and fuel economy that their advanced VCT technology offers.
The variable cam timing technology is proven to enhance engine efficiency, fuel economy and performance for wide-ranging Kia and Hyundai vehicles destined for markets worldwide. The CTA phasers take advantage of the existing torsional energy in the valve train to activate faster and operate under a wider array of engine speeds and temperatures than standard VCT systems. Employing BorgWarner’s variable force solenoid, CTA phasers need less engine oil, which also cuts parasitic losses and enables oil-actuated variable valve lift systems to operate with an extended duty cycle. The patented mid-position lock technology enables an increased range of camshaft positioning with a default stop at an intermediate position within the extended travel range. The distinct passive mid-lock technology offers foolproof return to the mid-park position for reliable engine starts in any operating situation.
