Pininfarina, the renowned automotive design and coachbuilding firm has designed cars for major brands like Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia and General Motors. Now, the company, which was recently acquired by the Indian company, Mahindra Group has confirmed that it will be producing about 10 units of its hydrogen fuel cell car. Meant only for track use, the Pininfarina H2 Speed cars for the limited production run will be built on a Le Mans Prototype 2 racing chassis that is homologated for FIA competition. The car will have a powertrain comprising two electric motors that will deliver at least 503 hp to the rear wheels. Pininfarina CEO Silvio Pietro Angori, stated that the company plans to have a working prototype ready by early 2017 while production is latd to commence in another 12 to 14 months. The production model will be definitely pricey at about USd 2.5 million and it is expected that it will be able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds. When the car debuted at the Geneva Motor Show this year, Pininfarina had also revealed that refueling a completely empty tank with hydrogen takes a mere three minutes.
Pinifarina’s concept hydrogen fuel-cell car weighed only 3,130-pounds and it is not clear whether the production model will also have the same weight, but it is expected to be relatively light as it will have a carbon fiber chassis.
