Honda debuted the Gienia aimed at the Chinese market at the Chengdu Auto Show that was held last week in China. The model will be launched at the retail level in November. With prices ranging from USD 11,230 to USD 16,470, the target customers are affluent young motorists who are looking for a compact sedan which will meet their needs.
Positioned as compact fastback above the Honda Fit and below the Honda Crider, the Gienia is a similar to a Honda Crosstour and uses the same platform as the Honda Greiz sedan. It is meant primarily for the Chinese market and there are no plans to produce the same model in other countries or export it overseas.
In China, the model will be made by Honda’s joint venture company, Dongfeng-Honda, that specializes in making Honda-branded cars for China.
The Gienia has a 1.5 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 131 hp and 155 Nm, which is paired with a five-speed manual or a CVT engine. The main competitors for the Gienia are expected to be the Volkswagen Jetta, the new Chevrolet Cavalier and even the company’s own compact SUVs like Guaangzhou-Honda Vezel and Dongfeng-Honda XR-V.
Honda is hoping that the model’s sporty and stylish design will make it a hit with affluent young consumers.
The Chengdu Auto Show which is third biggest auto show in China will run from September 2 to September 11.
