BMW M, the German manufacturer’s high performance division has come up with another exclusive, limited-run special-edition model, the BMW M3 CS. The model continues the sporty tradition of the highly successful M special editions which began with the E30 BMW M3 Evolution in 1988. The new four-door sedan offers motorists the perfect combination of practicality and dynamism.
The vehicle is powered by a 3.0-liter high-performance engine that comes with a Competition Package to take the performance of the BMW M3 CS to 460 hp, 10 hp more than the BMW M3. The engine has state-of-the-art M TwinPower Turbo technology to take the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. The vehicle’s top speed with the M Driver’s Package, is electronically limited to 280 km/h (174 mph). The six-cylinder in-line engine with its two mono-scroll turbochargers, charge air cooler, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing is definitely capable of more.
From the torque perspective, the focus is on high performance as well as developing high torque from low engine speeds so that efficiency remains high. For a high-performance vehicle, the BMW M3 CS offers an impressive combined fuel consumption of 8.5 l liters/100 km or 34 miles per gallon while CO2 emissions are relatively low at 198 g/km. Just one push of the red start/stop button gets the engine going, while its distinctive sound which is produced by the sports exhaust system that has been specially tune will be music to any true sportscar fan.
The powerful engine in the new BMW M3 CS is paired with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) having Drivelogic. This high-tech transmission comes with a separate oil cooler and facilitates both automated gear changes and manual interventions with the shift paddles on the steering wheel. Gears changes occur in fractions of a second and there is no interruption in the flow of power. It also employs a long seventh gear to keep revs low and minimize fuel consumption over longer journeys.
The suspension of the new BMW M3 CS is similar to the that of the M3 with Competition Package. The links and wheel carriers at both the front and rear axles are made from forged aluminum and are thus extremely light. That keeps the unsprung masses low and benefits driving dynamics.
The M3 CS has an Adaptive M suspension as a standard feature and its geometry has been optimized to ensure that the vehicle delivers the best performance both on the road and on the track. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system which includes M Dynamic Mode and the Active M Differential helps the vehicle to maintain the best possible grip in all driving conditions. The control systems for the Adaptive M suspension, DSC and Active M Differential as well as the set-up of the electromechanical steering have been modified to suit the dynamic requirements of the BMW M3 CS. Drivers can adjust the steering and suspension settings Based on the demands of the terrain and their own personal preferences.
The BMW M3 CS sports light-alloy wheels which look like they belong on track (front: 9 J x 19, rear: 10 J x 20) and are factory fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires (front: 265/35 R 19, rear: 285/30 R 20). These tires are semi-slick cup tires, which perform just well on track as they do on the road with their outstanding grip and impressive lateral stability at high track speeds. Customers can also opt to order the M3 CS with Michelin Sport road tires.
When it comes to the interiors, the combination of two-tone full leather in Silverstone/Black and Alcantara results in the creation of a truly classy interior while keeping to the performance theme. Maany innovative technological functions like automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon surround sound system and the Navigation system Professional are included as standard features.
The BMW M GmbH designers have ensured that the exteriors too reflect the sporty intent of the car with its prominent front end having cutting-edge twin LED headlights and the front apron with large, three-section air intakes. They redesigned the Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid specifically for the M3 CS, and it combines well with the front splitter and the rear diffuser to minimize the dynamic lift. The bonnet, the roof and the components of the boot lid, the front splitter and the rear diffuser are made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), a high-tech material which is lightweight and extremely rigid to give the vehicle added stability.
BMW has been taking orders for the new BMW M3 CS from January 2018 and commenced production of the special-edition model, which will have a limited production run of just 1,200 units from March 2018.
