Hyundai Mobis used the 2018 edition of CES to showcase its innovative technologies like self-parking and green technologies.
Commenting on the company’s participation in the show, Youngsuk Ko, vice president for R&D strategy and planning at Hyundai Mobis said that the technologies the company featured at CES 2018 are the outcome of years spent in research and development with regard to autonomous driving, eco-friendliness, infotainment and human-machine interfacing. In view of the fact that the concept of mobility is changing at a rapid pace, Hyundai Mobis gives top priority to user experience. The company’s goal is to support and enable an excellent user experience by developing a people-centered, environmentally friendly platform for the age of autonomous driving.
One of the highlights at the Hyundai Mobis booth was the e-Corner Module, which is positioned as the first integrated, modular platform which is meant specifically for electric and eco-friendly vehicles. The module comprises a motor, e-Damper, Brake by Wire, and Steer by Wire technologies in a package that can be installed within each wheel of a car, thus eliminating the need for a traditional chassis and central engine. EV’s can thus acquire four-wheel drive capabilities. From the design perspective, designers will now have more flexibility when it comes to conceptualizing the cars of the future, and there will be more space for batteries or hydrogen storage. The e-Corner Module is slated to be fully developed by 2021.
Hyundai is also working on a number of smart systems that seek to automate the parking process. Remote Smart Parking Assist uses ultrasound to detect surrounding objects and help cars park themselves with just the touch of a button once the driver and passengers have disembarked. Hyundai is planning to integrate this feature in mass production models as early as this year.
Automatic Valet Parking, combines self-driving technology with self-parking capabilities so that a vehicle can park itself in a nearby parking lot or garage without any assistance from a driver or passenger. The technology uses advanced autonomous sensor technology including ultrasound, cameras, and lidar, in addition to highly detailed maps and localized communication with parking infrastructure. The development of Automatic Valet Parking is also scheduled to be finished and become a part of production vehicles by the end of 2018.
