Suzuki Bags Prestigious Award for Development of New Resin to be Used in Car Interiors

Suzuki won the prestigious “Contribution Prize” for its development of a new resin that can be used in automotive interiors. The company is planning to proceed with large scale use of this new technology for interior components including the detailing of the new audio system used for the all-new Swift hatchback that the company debuted at 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
The 49th edition of the prestigious ‘Contribution Prize’ of the Ichimura Prizes in Industry was hosted by the New Technology Development Foundation in Japan. The citation for the award said that Suzuki won the prize for the ‘Development of resin material with superb appearance and application to pre-coloured interior parts’.

The material that Suzuki is a bio-polycarbonate resin material that not only provides components with a high-gloss surface appearance but also makes gives them the ability to withstand sunlight, heat, and impact. It is ideal for use in automotive components that need to be of exceptionally high quality.

According to Suzuki Motor Corp, the award winning resin material can be used to enhance car interior parts by using it in tandem with technologies of material pre-colouring and structure design.

The new technology can be used to make pre-colored components having high-quality glossy surface which is similar in quality to that of painted parts. It also makes products of these parts more sustainable as it minimizes the impact of the production process on the environment due to reduction in emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when compared to painted parts.
