Tire manufacturer Goodyear has teamed up with the Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology (LIST) to invest in a USD 52 million in a research and development project that focuses on next-generation mobility and sustainable mobility.
The project is expected to last over a period of five years and Goodyear will receive assistance from the Luxembourg Government R&D State Aid for this project which the company expects to hone the talent of R&D personnel in the automotive industry.
The project will create as many as 38 full-time research posts and “a significant number” of PhD/post-doctoral positions, according to the statement issued by the tire manufacturer. Researchers will work out of the Goodyear Innovation Center in Luxembourg as well as the Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology. Goodyear is eventually planning to relocate its innovation center to an “automotive campus” in Bissen, Luxembourg, which is a few miles southwest of the center’s current location in Colmar-Berg.
The project is meant to drive further innovation in the field of future mobility and will focus on making tires that are more environment friendly in terms of the manufacturing process, performance and materials.
Another aspect that the study will focus on, according to Goodyear, is “advancing data science” in order to improve processes that are currently being used to deliver tires and to shorten product development cycles. Another area in the spotlight will be the development of “innovative lightweight materials” in order to lower the rolling resistance of tires.
