Federal-Mogul Motorparts has received a second patent in the United States for its Moog Problem Solver vertical control arm bushing design. This brings the total number of US patents that Moog has now received for its range of steering and suspension components to 48. According to company sources, the patent (US 9,327,570 B2) pertains to a better design and improved methods to manufacture the problem solver part like the fabrication of its bearing and housing as well as its final assembly.
The first patent (US 8,925,944) for the Problem Solver bushing was issued in January 2015 for its innovative ball-and-socket configuration that can increase the service life of the component by 10 times when compared to OE style parts and can improve steering and handling characteristics. The bushings are already used in Toyota, Ford, Honda, General Motors, Mazda and Chrysler vehicles and make a significant difference in the time needed for control arm installation.
Speaking about the new patent, Richard Harvey, engineering director, steering and suspension products, Federal-Mogul Motorparts said that the Moog product engineering team is constantly innovating to find ways to enhance value to customers through making components that exhibit better durability, strength, performance and ease of installation.
In conventional bushings, hard rubber is used and this can make it tougher for technicians to align the sleeve with the vehicle frame bolt hole. The new MOOG bushings offer technicians the advantage of fast and easy sleeve alignment.
