The successful production of the highly anticipated new Land Rover Defender is now more imminent after the model completed a demanding testing program with Tusk in Kenya. The testing process supported Tusk’s lion conservation initiatives in Africa.

A prototype of the new Defender was fitted with an integrated raised air intake and sported a unique camouflage that was designed specially for the area the testing was conducted in. The vehicle was used to support operations at the 14,000-hectare Borana Conservancy, and as part of the testing process was used for tracking radio collared lions and transporting supplies.

As part of this unique test program, Tusk operatives put the new Defender through many real-world tests like instances when the wildlife managers forded rivers, used the vehicle to pull heavily loaded trailers and tackled really challenging terrain. The prototype model was even used as part of an effort to replace the inoperative tracking collar that was fitted to a male lion, after it was sedated at close range from the safety of the new vehicle.

The Borana Conservancy is an area that is notable for geographical features like its steep and rocky inclines, flat plains, muddy river banks, deeply rutted tracks, and thick forests, and thus the new Defender effectively showcased its capability to tackle diverse challenges through these tests.

Nick Collins, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar Land Rover, said that the company is now in the advanced stages of the vehicle’s testing and development stage. Working with Tusk in Kenya made it possible for Jaguar Land Rover to gather valuable performance data. The Borana reserve served as the perfect environment to test the extreme the all-terrain attributes of the new Defender.

Tusk has contributed to conservation initiatives for nearly 30 years in more than 20 countries spread across the globe. Land Rover has collaborated with Tusk as an official partner for 15 years. The new Defender was used at the Borana Conservancy to support Tusk’s lion conservation program and thus highlight the critical situation that lions across Africa face, especially in view of the fact that Tusk is marking 2019 as the Year of the Lion. The testing initiative also received support from Jaguar Land Rover’s worldwide logistical partner and another supporter of Tusk, DHL.

Three-quarters of lion populations on the continent are in decline and black and white rhinos now outnumber lions in Africa. Less than 20,000 lions survive across the globe in the wild, sharply down from 200,000 in the last century.

Charles Mayhew MBE, Chief Executive, Tusk said: “This year marks Tusk’s Year of the Lion. Our aim is to raise awareness of the alarming decline in lion populations across Africa. Fortunately, within the Borana Conservancy, there are a number of prides of lion and tracking and monitoring their movements across this vast and tough environment is vital in order to protect them and reduce any conflict with neighbouring communities. The new Defender took everything in its stride, from deep river wading to climbing rocky trails.”

The new Land Rover Defender will make its global debut later in 2019 but potential customers can register their interest early at: https://www.landrover-uae.com/en/defender

Uber has announced that it would be resuming its testing of autonomous vehicles. The ride-sharing company faced a lot of flack when one of its test vehicles hit and killed a pedestrian who was trying to cross a road in Arizona in March this year.

This time around, Uber will be taking a very low key approach. The autonomous vehicles will be running on a one-mile loop between two of the company’s offices in Pittsburgh. Testing will be conducted only during daylight hours and when the weather is dry for optimal operation of the sensors. The speed of the test vehicles will also be limited to 25 mph for every test run. There is no allowance for passengers during any of the test runs. Uber has not disclosed how many vehicles will be used in the test runs.

Prior to the accident, Uber was testing as many as 200 vehicles which were making test runs on public roads in areas like Toronto, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Arizona. After the accident occurred, Uber had committed to keeping its test vehicles off public roads until the company had greater confidence about their safety with regard to the general public. Uber is still waiting for approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to resume the testing of autonomous cars in Pittsburgh.

Every new autonomous car that Uber will test henceforth will have two passengers sitting in the front seats, unlike in the past when only one operator was required in the driver’s seat, even in risky scenarios like night driving in the city. The loop that Uber is planning for the initial test cars replicates the same route that its first test cars took back in 2016.

It will not be an easy task for Uber to regain the trust of the public. Uber is continuing with its drive to further develop autonomous driving technology as eliminating the cost of the drivers will help it to increase its profitability.

Altran a company that specializes in automotive engineering services and R&D has opened a testing center for passive safety testing center in Michigan which will focus on testing of passive safety technologies and devices like airbags and pedestrian protection technologies. The Michigan center will collaborate closely with other Altran centers across the globe like those in Canada, France, Austria and Germany. This is Altran’s first such center in the United States. The center will also provide customers with local distribution and turnkey-equipment support for customized applications from Altran’s Concept Tech and Microsys testing systems.

Altran has plans to set up a similar center in India in the wake of India’s planned move to impose more stringent regulations regarding seatbelts and airbags.

About the new center in Michigan, Rob Vatter, CEO of Altran North America said that at the new center, the company would bring engineering, testing, simulation and test equipment all under one roof. The company is also mulling the possibility of opening another testing center in Silicon Valley to cater to technology companies and automotive companies involved in the development of connected and autonomous cars.

The Michigan center will have a universal test system with robotic launchers that will assess the impact on pedestrians or occupants in crashes; impactor testing equipment for airbags, a bumper pendulum, low-speed crash device, barrier trolley and drop tower. The testing equipment will be integrated with high-speed cameras and techniques that will make it possible, for instance to measure the time needed for a side-cushion airbag to deploy.

According to Vatter, Altrans is already working on testing passive safety for autonomous cars for German and French OEMs. When it comes to autonomous cars, the seating configurations are likely to change depending on the occupants of a car. A family with three kids will have a different seating system compared to two adults having a business meeting and hence the interiors would be quite different. This poses a challenge when it comes to passive safety. People will no longer always be facing foreward.
Altran has performed passive-safety-testing equipment projects and achieved more than 240 installations for major OEMs. The company has 6,000-plus automotive specialists operating in 15 countries.
