Jaguar Land Rover has pioneered a new technique that could help reduce cases of motion sickness by at least 60 percent. While motorists are less likely to develop motion sickness, passengers, especially young children are highly susceptible to motion sickness, especially in the case of long journeys. With the advent of automated vehicles and more people set to become passengers, the use of this new technique that Jaguar Land Rover has developed can make travelling more comfortable.

The company’s wellness research engineer, Spencer Salter used a number of test vehicles and other Jaguar Land Rover facilities to come up with a technique to measure what he called ‘an individual’s wellness score’. This would serve as an indicator of a person’s susceptibility to motion sickness or what is scientifically called kinetosis.

The device that uses to calculate this score is still in development and is undergoing patent approval, so Jaguar Land Rover has not disclosed any technical details about this device. It has revealed though that the device uses non-invasive biometric sensors that are used to record physiological signals. This data is when used in combination with motion and dynamics data can indicate when someone is becoming motion sick even before they experience any symptoms.
These sensors will be placed in places where they are not very visible, like on door handles and the scores that they capture are then put through a complex algorithm by the vehicle’s computer. Using this data, the dynamic and cabin features are then adapted depending on the individual’s score. These settings can even be saved for future journeys.

Jaguar says that by adapting the driving and cabin environment to an individual’s needs, the ‘wellness score’ technology can reduce motion sickness by 60%.

This new technology can be used to further enhance the automated travel experience. Salter said that the company has continued to work on its self-driving technology so that the company’s autonomous development is the smoothest, least motion-sickness inducing and ultimately the most comfortable experience so that the passengers can enjoy other activities in an autonomous vehicle

The technology is expected to be deployed in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles over the next three to five years.

Leading interiors supplier International Automotive Components Group has come up with the concept of developing scents and application processes to counteract motion sickness. According to Rose Ryntz, IAC vice president of engineering, advanced development and material engineering who spoke to Automotive News, this could become an important component of future vehicles, especially in the case of autonomous vehicles where passengers could find themselves travelling at fast speeds without necessarily facing forwards in the direction of motion. This dissonance could significantly increase the risk of motion sickness.

IAC is investigating the use of fragrances like ginseng, herbal oils and lavenders for use in the interiors of autonomous vehicles. She said that these scents could be used to counteract motion sickness if they are encapsulated in plastics. However, this is by no means an exact science as the triggers for motion sickness could be different for different individuals.

Ryntz estimated that the use of such aromas could become commercially viable as early as 2030. In the case of automated cars, there is no driver driving the car and with your hands off the steering wheel and plenty of permutations for seating position and direction, chances are higher for motion sickness

IAC specializes in the production of parts like dashboards, consoles and door panels. However, there is still a lot of confusion about how the use of scents can be translated into product design and how they can be incorporated into commercial vehicle materials. Some of the factors that need to be taken into consideration include the direction in which the vehicle and the passenger are facing, the speed at which the vehicle is travelling and the trigger factors for motion sickness. Another challenge is getting people to participate in tests involving the use of plastics in which different scents have been integrated. Getting the scents to last poses another challenge while finding a smell that can work for as many people as possible is also difficult.

Car sickness is generally an unavoidable part of long road trips. In the UAE, where offroading is a very common pastime, car sickness can spoil what would have been otherwise a very enjoyable time for family and friends. Tough terrain, sitting in the rear seats, playing video-games, watching movies, stop-start traffic on congested highways and winding roads are other factors that can lead to car sickness. Road sickness affects approximately two-thirds of motorists and their passengers at some point or the other. It is generally more common in teenagers and young children.
Ford recently carried out new research in collaboration with experts on motion sickness, which revealed that if passengers stared at a screen even for a short period of 10 minutes, they were likely to feel car sick. And this applied to grownups, not children.
Eike Schmidt, research engineer at the Ford Research and Innovation Centre, in Aachen, Germany said that car sickness turn a long awaited family vacation into a nightmare with parents fearing the worst. He added that this is why for Ford, comfort is a priority when it comes to designing cars for the future. The company is doing all it can to reduce car sickness.

The warning symptoms for motion sickness include yawning and perspiration. This points towards mismatch between the signals that the brain gets from the eyes and the organs in the ear that are involved in balancing. Motion sickness only affects those who have begun walking. Hence, babies don’t get car sick, but pets do.
Prof. Dr. Jelte Bos, of TNO, Perceptual and Cognitive Systems, Soesterberg, in the Netherlands commented, “Car sickness is a complex problem. It is a natural reaction to an unnatural stimulus that cannot be cured as such. But we can look to alleviate the symptoms.”
In initial tests, Ford found that when screens are mounted at a higher position and the road ahead could be seen on either side, volunteers who participated in the study felt less sick. Further tests will be held to come up with alternative ways that journeys could be experienced within the cabin so

that passengers would get prior warning about hump backed bridges and winding roads.
Prof. Bos, who also holds a chair in motion perception at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam explained that driving behavior could play a role in the onset and extent of motion sickness. She has worked on a device that shows when behavior behind the wheel could affect sickness-prone passengers and said that a smoother driving style can significantly reduce nausea. An added bonus is that it will help cut fuel costs as well.

According to Prof. Bos, here are a few more techniques to reduce motion sickness:

 

  • Moving to the middle if riding in the rear seats as this would help to see the road ahead.
  • Driving smoothly and avoiding sudden braking, harsh acceleration, and potholes as far as possible.
  • Distracting sufferers with an activity like a family sing.
  • Drinking cola and eating light snacks like ginger biscuits, though it would be wise to avoid coffee
  • Using a pillow or head support to keep the head as still as possible
  • Keeping fresh air circulating with air-conditioning
