Supercar brand Koenigsegg has announced that it will be collaborating with NEVs for making electric cars in the supercar category. NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB) is the company that own the assets of the company that was previously known as Saab. Saab had filed for bankruptcy and with backing from Chinese investor, Evergrande Health took on the shape of a new company named NEVS. NEVS is contributing 150 million euros (USD 171 million) to the new joint venture with Koenigsegg which would be involved in the production of electric cars. NEVS will have a 65 percent stake in the joint venture while Koenigsegg will have the balance 35 percent share and will contribute intellectual property, technology licenses and product design to the partnership.

Considering that Geely now owns Volvo Cars and is the largest investor in truckmaker AB Volvo, this deal will increase the Chinese presence in the Swedish automotive industry.

NEVS has production facilities in Trollhättan in Sweden and Tianjin in China. The company is planning to shortly set up another factory in Shanghai, and has been trying to position itself as a manufacturer of pure electric vehicles, though it has not yet made a vehicle.

Evergrande Health invested USD 930 million in cash into NEVS and this will give the company the funds it needs to develop costly electric models and to gain access to new automotive technologies.
Vergrande Health is a subsidiary of the Chinese property developer, China Evergrande Group and was formerly an investor in Faraday Future.

Through the deal between both companies, NEVS will acquire a 20 percent stake in Koenigsegg. The company also has a loose partnership with Didi Chuxing, a shared mobility services provider in China.

“Koenigsegg is an enticing company developing advanced cars with unique technology and with a customer base that is one of a kind. … We have both competencies and facilities to support Koenigsegg on their journey forward,” NEVS Chairman Kai Johan Jiang said.

Koenigsegg, has already developed a plug-in hybrid, but has not yet developed a fully electric vehicle.
Tesla has already shown with its success there is demand for luxury electric cars and this is why companies like Audi, Porsche, and Jaguar have all ventured into this field.

Koenigsegg however makes models that in a different category altogether, the ultra-luxury sports car category. The only potential competitor is Ferrari, which has said it may launch an electric version after 2022, while Lamborghini is also keen to explore the segment.

Koenigsegg might have sold out all its Ageras a while ago, but it marked the official end of the Agera production run by unveiling the last two Ageras. They are a limited special edition called Koenigsegg Agera FEs, with FE signifying “Final Edition,” and each car has a special name borrowed from Norse mythology to symbolize its performance and strength. While one car is called Thor, while the other is called Väder. The names are a part of the car’s badging where normally the model’s name is placed.

Both the cars are FE versions and have a few extra special features when compared to the “typical” Agera model. The buyers of these cars were not charged extra for these additional options and unique parts, which include rear wings and larger front spoilers. While Thor comes with a dorsal fin, Väder has some unique cutouts in the wing supports which showcase the components that actuate the active wing. Thor has a two-tone finish with a part of the exterior having a plain clear carbon fiber finish, while some of it has a clear finish with “diamond-flake.” Väder has the diamond-flake finish over the entire car along with white gold leaf accents across the body. Both cars are powered by the 1,360-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine from the One:1.

The plan was for the vehicles to be first driven by their new owners at a Koenigsegg event in southern Germany on the weekend of July 6. The two cars will then be sent to the United Kingdom for being a part of Koenigsegg’s exhibit at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

With the production of the final Agera and the Regera built, as of now, Koenigsegg is not offering any models for sale. The company has however announced that it has grand plans to unveil the successor of the Agera at the 2019 edition of the Geneva Motor Show. Based on its previous track record, that is likely to be one Koenigsegg model that will be well worth the wait.

The race is on to make the fastest hypercars in the world. With established brands like Bugatti, Koenigsegg, Hennessey as well as upstarts like our very own Dubai-based Devel Motors vying to make the fastest car in the world, it should be noted that one of the main constraints is the lack of options when it comes to tires that can tolerate such high speeds. Engine power is not really an issue.

This barrier looks like it will soon be overcome with Michelin’s product manager for original equipment, Eric Schmedding saying in an interview to Bloomberg that the leading tire manufacturer is involved in efforts to develop tires that can consistently tolerate speeds exceeding 300 mph. Michelin had made the Pilot Sport Cup tires that both Bugatti and Koenigsegg used in their attempts to break land speed records.

When vehicles move at exceedingly high speeds, they generate very high downforce and friction, which the tires have to withstand. In the event that anything goes wrong, it can cause a fatal accident at such high speeds.

The challenge is to produce a tire that can tolerage significantly high levels of heat, pressure and wear. These tires which are used on a 300 mph attempt must have the capability to repeatedly tolerate high speeds for minutes at a time, as the official records is awarded after calculating the average speed of several runs over a set course. Schmedding revealed, “We are knocking on the door of 300 mph.”

Current models which are likely to set the next record include the Bugatti Chiron (1,479 hp, 1,600 Nm), Koenigsegg Agera RS (boosted to 1,360 hp, 1,369 Nm) and Hennessey Venom (1,600 hp targeted output) and McLaren’s new hyper-GT, the BP 23.

Koenigsegg is a brand that is known for its high-performance sports cars and has recently debuted suspensions that can be controlled remotely. There are other companies that use Öhlins dampers, but Koenigsegg’s dampers are not only electronically adjustable, but it is possible to make adjustments to them online. This means that with just a phone call to the company’s technical team at the factory in Sweden, the engineers there can remotely change the damper settings to suit the preferences of customers without accessing the car physically.

The Swedish brand revealed all these details in a new blog article about its suspension and subframe technology. According to Koenigsegg, in addition to the feature that makes it possible to change suspension settings remotely, it is also possible to pre-program the car to make micro-adjustments for ideal performance, taking customization to new heights.

Koenigesegg’s spokesperson, Steven Wade explained that it is possible to control each corner independently through the dampers for ride height, bump and rebound. It is possible to preload dampers even half a second before taking a corner so that the car has the best grip before receiving input from the steering. The company does not use carbon fiber for its suspension components saying that when compared to the chrome-molybdenum that it now uses, carbon fiber is a lot more expensive and does not offer significant weight savings.

There are a few other brands like Tesla which use GPS technology in their suspensions in their models. For example, Teslas that have air suspension can automatically raise and lower in certain locations, but Koenigsegg is the first brand to pioneer suspensions that can be controlled remotely.

Koenigsegg does have a history of launching futuristic innovations like these to make models that are performance oriented. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing what innovation the Swedish company will come up with next.

Koenigsegg’s sister company FreeValve has come close to a production ready version of a camless engine. Qoros unveiled a working prototype of the engine at the 2016 Guangzhou auto show. This prototype made its debut subsequent to the unveiling of a concept vehicle that Qoros had debuted earlier in the year.

The new engine, which Qoros has chosen to term “Qamfree” uses pneumatic valve actuators instead of a camshaft to open up the valves of the camless engine. These valves are then closed using air pressure or springs. Thus, on both the exhaust and intake sides, motorists get more precise and completely customizable control over valve duration and lift.

This technology was developed by FreeValve, and the company claims that using this technology will help the engine to perform with higher torque and power. The use of “camless technology in combination with downsizing will definitely reduce fuel consumption and enhance fuel efficiency. The technology also eliminates the need for components like the wastegate, direct injection systems, throttle body, cam drive, camshaft, timing gear and cover, and pre-catalytic converter systems. This will help to optimize engine with regard to complexity, size, and weight.

The Qoros’ prototype is inspired by the brand’s 3 compact hatchback and comes with a turbocharged 1.6-liter camless engine which apparently has an output of 230 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. That is similar to the performance of BMW Group’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine’s performance in models like Mini’s John Cooper Works range, which has an output of 228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.

The Qoros 3 prototype has the first driveable version of FreeValve’s camless engine which has been designed for large scale production. Qoros and FreeValve will shortly commence testing a fleet of prototypes before beginning production of a production model that has not been named so far.
