Hyundai Motor Group today announced the formation of New Horizons Studio, a new unit focused on the development of Ultimate Mobility Vehicles, or UMVs for short.

Throughout history, humankind has shared an innate desire and need to explore new frontiers. New Horizons Studio envisions building vehicles to wander with unprecedented mobility. The products will target customers who have a need for travel in unconventional and off-road terrain, including places where vehicles have never roamed before. These vehicles will be subject to more challenging applications and environments, adaptable to changing conditions. Pushing the boundaries of vehicle development, the unit will reimagine how vehicles might traverse the world.

New Horizons Studio is led by Vice President Dr. John Suh, who has held several leadership roles at Hyundai Motor Group since 2011. He served as founding director of Hyundai Ventures, and then led Hyundai CRADLE (Center for Robotic-Augmented Design in Living Experiences) as its founding director based in Silicon Valley. He brings over 35 years of expertise in the automotive and emerging technology sectors, including roles at Stanford University, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC; formerly, Xerox PARC among others.

“We aim to create the world’s first transformer-class vehicle, also known as the Ultimate Mobility Vehicle,” notes Dr. Suh.

The new unit furthers Hyundai Motor Group’s vision to shape the future of mobility and onboard forward-thinking, innovative leadership from Silicon Valley and other innovation hubs.

Also making the jump to New Horizons Studio is Dr. Ernestine Fu, who joins the group as Director of Product Management. She has led research on human operator and autonomous vehicle interactions at Stanford University’s Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab, as well as scaled emerging technology companies for over nine years as a venture capital partner at Alsop Louie Partners.

Unveiled at CES 2019, Hyundai Elevate is the inaugural vehicle concept now being developed by New Horizons Studio. The vehicle does not rely solely on wheels and is expected to address challenging driving situations – for example, a car with robotic legs could save lives as the first responder in natural disasters; or, people who do not have access to an ADA ramp could hail a car to walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow wheelchairs to roll right in. Using a combination of robotics and wheeled locomotion technology, Elevate and other vehicles by New Horizons Studio are expected to redefine vehicular mobility.

Hyundai Motor Group announced today new technologies to improve the quality of air in vehicles and create a more pleasant indoor environment for customers.

Recognizing the growing concern about air quality, the Group unveiled three new air-conditioning technologies – ‘After-Blow’, ‘Multi-Air Mode’, and ‘Fine Dust Indicator’. The technologies will be introduced initially on select models in Korea and expand to upcoming Hyundai vehicles worldwide in the future.

After-Blow Technology

‘After-Blow’ dries the condensate on the evaporator and suppresses mold growth in the air-conditioning system, which can cause an odor during hot weather.

After the engine is turned off and the condensate on the evaporator drains naturally for about 30 minutes, ‘After-Blow’ activates for 10 minutes to dry the evaporator and any condensate leftover in the air passage. The air-conditioning system automatically allows influx of outside air during this time to prevent humidity from building up.

The technology uses an intelligent battery sensor (IBS) to monitor the battery and stops functioning when the battery is low, allaying any concerns about batter discharge. It also de-activates when the air conditioning system is not in use for a certain period of time, or when the outside temperature is low.

Multi-Air Mode Technology

‘Multi-Air Mode’ uses multiple vents for air conditioning and heating to create a more pleasant indoor environment with gentle wind.

When this mode is activated, the air is dispersed to the newly added multi-air slots in the driver and passenger seats in addition to the normal air vents. The overall wind volume remains the same, but the dispersion of wind reduces direct air contact and softens the air.

This mode can be switched on and off based on the preference of the driver.

Fine Dust Indicator Technology

‘Fine Dust Indicator’ measures the air inside the vehicle in real time and delivers digitized information, allowing the driver to better manage the air quality.

The indicator displays the concentration and pollution level of ultrafine particles (PM 2.5) inside the vehicle using integer numbers and colors for better visibility to the user: blue for 0 to 15 μg/m3, green for 16 to 35 μg/m3, orange for 36 to 75 μg/m3, and red for 76 μg/m3 or higher.

If the level of ultrafine particles exceeds 36 μg /m3 while the function is active, the air-cleaning mode will run to purify the air in the vehicle. The air-cleaning system automatically sets the air volume between 3 and 8 and switches to air-recirculation mode and activates the air conditioning system to reduce indoor humidity. If the air does not improve in air-cleaning mode, it can also serve as a reminder to the driver to replace air-conditioner filters or to clean contaminated seats and mats.

Hyundai Motor Group has revealed that it has developed innovative technology to help drivers who are hearing-impaired. The technology does this by replacing sounds with visual or touch-based cues, and then it uses advanced sensor and artificial intelligence technology to interpret and thus ‘hear’ the traffic around them.

The technology comprises two separate driving assist systems which work in tandem named the Audio-Visual Conversion (AVC) and Audio-Tactile Conversion (ATC) systems. They leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze sound patterns heard outside the car. They then use vibrations of the steering wheel and pictograms displayed through the head-up display (HUD) to alert the driver and explain to the motorist what it has learned through the sounds the system can hear. The steering wheel also comes with multi-colored LEDs which provide navigational information while driving.

One example is the ability of the technology to alert the driver of emergency vehicles by recognizing the sound of a siren. It then vibrates the wheel as an alert and displays the appropriate pictogram on the HUD. It also interprets data from vehicle sensors – as in the case when the vehicle is reversing – so that the driver knows how far the car is from obstacles without depending on the warning alarm.

Hyundai demonstrated the technology in a campaign video named “Quiet Taxi”. The campaign video, as well as the technology itself, highlights the importance of ‘freedom of mobility,’ attesting to Hyundai’s efforts to make it easier for the hearing-impaired to drive freely and safely using state-of-the-art innovative developments. As part of its goal, Hyundai has also developed an application that facilitates communication between passengers and drivers who are hearing-impaired.

The documentary follows Daeho Lee, Seoul’s first ever designated hearing-impaired taxi driver, as he uses the driving assist technology.

Lee is a father of two children who recently took on a new job as a taxi driver, had difficulties with hearing and had to depend primarily on his sight. This caused issues with other drivers when he was unable to hear the horns or sirens of surrounding vehicles. He also needed to constantly rely on his vision, which caused fatigue at a rate many times that of the average driver.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced ‘FCEV Vision 2030’, its roadmap to expedite the development of a hydrogen society and to successfully leverage the group’s global leadership in fuel-cell technologies.

In tandem with the implementation of the roadmap, the Group, which includes Hyundai Motor Company and its affiliates, will significantly ramp up its production capacity for fuel-cell systems to increase production to 700,000 units every year by 2030. This will involve exploring new business opportunities to supply its fuel-cell systems to other manufacturers of transportation systems like vehicles, drones, ships, railway rolling stock, and forklifts. It is also expected that demand for hydrogen fuel-cell systems from sectors other than transportation, like power generation and storage systems, will also increase in the near future.

Commenting on the move, Euisun Chung, Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group said that Hyundai Motor Group, the global pioneer of the commercial production of FCEV, by announcing this plan has taken a bold step to advance the realization of a hydrogen society. He said that the group plans to expand its role beyond the automotive transportation sector and thus play a pivotal role in society’s transition to clean energy. The company plans to do this by making hydrogen an economically viable source of energy. He concluded by expressing his confidence that hydrogen power will transcend the transportation sector and become a leading global economic success.

According to the ‘FCEV Vision 2030’ roadmap, Hyundai Motor Group and its suppliers will invest approximately KRW 7.6 trillion (USD 6.8 billion) in R&D and facility expansion, and this is expected to create about 51,000 jobs by 2030.

The Group plans to have a 500,000-units-a–year FCEV production capacity by 2030, and this will cover fuel cells for both passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, with the expectation of having to cater to high demand for global FCEVs which is projected to reach about 2 million units a year by that time.

As the first step to attaining ‘FCEV Vision 2030’, HMG’s fuel-cell system manufacturing affiliate, Hyundai Mobis Co. has already broken ground for its second fuel-cell system plant. The factory is located in Chungju, South Korea and this plant will help Mobis to increase its annual fuel-cell system output to 40,000 units by 2022, a significant increase from the current 3,000 units.

The Group’s flagship auto-making affiliate, Hyundai Motor Company, had earlier this year launched NEXO, its second-generation commercialized FCEV. The NEXO offered greater efficiency when compared to the Tucson FCEV HMG had launched in 2013. The NEXO was designed based on Hyundai’s first dedicated fuel-cell vehicle architecture, which provides many structural benefits like lighter weight, increased cabin space and improved fuel-cell system layout.

The Group hopes to further refine the fuel-cell system used in NEXO models to upgrade and diversify its fuel-cell system range so that it can meet the demands from various industry sectors.
In December, Hyundai Motor Group set up a dedicated division to develop and support fuel-cell system businesses.

The Group’s proprietary fuel-cell system combines hydrogen fuel with oxygen sourced from the atmosphere to produce electricity. As there is no combustion, the only by-product of the process is water. It also purifies polluted air, making it the ultimate source of clean energy.

McKinsey & Company performed a study which estimated that use of hydrogen can help reduce the comprehensive ownership cost of all kinds of transportation by about 10 percent with its high energy density and ease of stack refuelling.
The study also estimated that approximately 5.5 million~6.5 million fuel cell system units will be needed globally by 2030.

Hyundai Motor Group is the only company that has established a dedicated plant for commercial production of fuel cell systems. With the construction of an additional fuel cell plant, Hyundai can quickly target market
success on a global scale.

The Hydrogen Council, a global initiative of leading energy, transport and industry companies including Hyundai Motor, predicts the annual demand for hydrogen would increase tenfold by 2050, thereby creating diverse opportunities for sustainable economic growth.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced that it will be carrying out a major restructuring as a result of which its regional subsidiaries will have greater autonomy. The move is meant to offset the drop in profit and sales in markets like China, India and the United States. Other recent initiatives include plans for Hyundai and its luxury brand Genesis’s plans to reduce the product design time by half from three years to one and a half years.

While other automakers like Volkswagen, Toyota and Honda had decentralized operations many years ago, Hyundai had continued with its top-down style of management as a part of which all major decisions were made by the corporate headquarters in Seoul. The recent announcement marks a significant shift in the Korean automaker’s history.
Hyundai was established 47 years ago and had acquired Kia Motors in 1998. The centralized mode of decision making had resulted in discrepancies between manufacturing targets and sales targets and supply and demand issues.

Hyundai is completely reworking its strategy in wake of the recent drop in profits. Hyundai’s sales in China dropped due to the diplomatic conflict between China and Korea over the deployment of a US missile system in South Korea while Hyundai’s sales in the United States slumped as it does not have many SUV models.

As an outcome of decentralization, regional sales and manufacturing teams will now report to the their regional headquarters instead of the corporate headquarters and they will decide on the number of vehicles and type of vehicles in their individual markets instead of having a number imposed on them by Seoul.

Hyundai is one of the few automakers which has made efforts to create models that are custom-made of reach market instead of “global” models that are expected to do equally well in all markets. These models like the Eon subcompact for the Indian market required hundreds of hours of intensive research on customer tastes and preferences before a viable model was conceptualized and produced.
The region-first restructuring strategy would first be applied in the North American market and then in the Indian market. The global division inside headquarters has already been reorganized with new teams to help serve the regions around the world. The restructuring is expected to give Hyundai’s and Kia’s subsidiaries around the world the freedom to react to the product demands in their home markets and this should boost sales by a significant extent.

Hyundai Mobis, which is part of the Hyundai Motor Group has developed what it claims is the first airbag system for in the world for sunroofs, according to a report in the Korean Herald.

According to Hyundai Mobis, there is greater risk of injury to the occupants of a vehicle having a sunroof in the event of an accident. The company submitted a study to the US-based safety agency National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTA) citing the same and said this prompted the company to come up with the concept of a sunroof airbag in order to give greater protection to the occupants if the vehicle experiences a rollover or collision.

According to the report, the size of the market for sunroofs was USD 4,924 million in 2015, and this is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10.9 percent by 2022. Based on the study, the growth rate for sunroofs will be higher in the premium automotive markets of India, China, and Korea.

Hyndai Mobis worked on various prototypes in view of the growing demand for sunroofs in vehicles and conducted tests in order to come up with the optimal solution. The shortlisted panoramic sunroof airbag will be essentially an integrated mounting module which will be fixed inside the panoramic sunroof module. When an accident occurs, this will be deployed from the rear to the front along the development wire type guider. In order to develop the ejection mitigation performance, the double cushion structure type of delay cushion type was applied to the optimum cushion type to secure the performance of the present level of curtain airbag. The airbag that has been developed takes about 0.08 seconds to deploy so that it will minimize the chances for serious neck and head injuries in a rollover accident.
