Corning showcased a dashboard prototype featuring the company’s Corning Gorilla Glass for Automotive Interiors at the Society for Information Display’s (SID) Display Week. The Display Week is being held from May 21 to 26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

At the company’s booth at the event, Corning displayed for the first time a standalone dashboard prototype that highlights sleek, 3D, cold-formed Corning Gorilla Glass for Automotive Interiors. When compared to other types of glass, the Corning Gorilla Glass is highly suitable for automotive interior displays in connected cars due to its durability, design flexibility and high-tech capabilities.

Commenting on the new product, Fabio Salgado, program manager, Corning Automotive Interiors said that Corning’s Gorilla Glass has transformed the relationships and daily interactions with smartphones for customers, and now the company is using this premium material in automobiles to enhance the way motorists interact with their cars. Using thin, scratch-resistant, and optically advantaged Corning Gorilla Glass for Automotive Interiors will further enhance and enable features like multi-touch response and haptic applications, as well as anti-glare and anti-reflective surface treatments. This will help customers to enjoy the luxurious and modern feel of glass without experiencing its disadvantages like harsh daytime and nighttime reflections.

He added, “We at Corning believe that tough, beautiful technical glass is key to bringing cars into the vivid connected future.”

Corning showcased the latest concepts in automotive glass technology at the recent CES Show that was held in Las Vegas. The demonstrated what it called “The Glass Age” with a glass-enabled concept car. The car served to highlight how the company’s proprietary Gorilla Glass can be used for new applications in automotive glass and other products.
A statement issued by the company said Corning is redefining the automotive experience through its products like the Gorilla Glass which is thin, tough, and optically advantaged. Speaking about the company’s participation in the show, Dr. Jeffrey Evenson, senior vice president and chief strategy officer said that through the show, the company had an opportunity to share its evolving Glass Age vision. The show served as a platform for consumers, customers and partners to engage with Corning and help it build the ecosystems for innovative solutions using precision glass that can redefine everyday activities. He expressed his belief that glass components can be as vital to the next 50 years as silicon components have been to the last 50 years.

Another company that showcased innovations in automotive glass with its next-generation Asola Spheric OEM solar glass auto roofs was Tellus Power. These solar glass auto roofs comprise spherically curved solar glass panels which are custom designed for auto manufacturers for direct integration into a car roof. They can also be used as solar glass sunroof. The different variants of the roof include a panoramic sunroof, openable sunroof, or electric tilt and slide sunroof.

According to Tellus Power, Asola solar auto glass features auto-grade, dual-laminated tempered safety glass that is robust enough to stand on, and yet is flexible enough to conform to the car roof shape. The energy generated by the solar roofs can be used to charge the batteries of electric vehicles batteries and to provide power to the HVAC blower while the vehicle is parked. This will reduce interior heat build-up by 50 percent without draining the vehicle’s battery.

Tellus-Asola is also launching custom auto manufacturer-branded solar glass car roof kits. These kits include a solar glass panel inserted into a slim carrier. This carrier can be glued directly onto a car roof and eliminates the need to drill unnecessary holes. These products are built in Erfurt, Germany.

When travelling in vehicles, safety is a prime consideration. This is especially true when it comes to material that by its very nature, is considered to be fragile, like the glass used in cars for windshields and windows. Most people would like the glass used in their vehicles to be as thick as possible. There appeared to be no chance for Corning to make any headway in the automotive industry as the Gorilla Glass it produces is positioned as glass that is lighter in weight.

With the growing emphasis on fuel efficiency, automotive manufacturers have become concerned about the weight of the glass that is used in the vehicles. In a bid to make vehicles lighter, they are more open to using Corning’s Gorilla Glass in production vehicles.
According to Corning, the innovative Gorilla Glass is a lot stronger and lighter than the glass that is conventionally used for automobiles. Corning has been working on Gorilla Glass for years in order to use in different vehicle applications, and have even developed thinner windshields. Currently, though Gorilla Glass is used mainly in smartphones, smartwatches and touch screens.

Some of the leading automotive manufacturers have emerged as early adopters when it comes to using Gorilla Glass in their production models. These include the use of Gorilla Glass in the Ford GT sports car which has a Gorilla Glass windshield and the BMW i8 which uses the glass in interior applications. So far, four companies have already started using the glass, with many more expressing interest in doing the same.

Doug Harshbarger, Corning’s business director for emerging automotive innovations said that suppliers and automotive manufacturers are a bit cautious about incorporating Gorilla Glass as it is thinner. With norms regarding the weight of vehicles and fuel economy standards becoming stricter, automakers are showing greater willingness to experiment with Gorilla Glass. According to Harshbarger, automakers are generally very conservative when it comes to applying new technologies. This is why they prefer to try out new materials in the lowest volumes first, like BMW did by trying Corning glass for an interior window.

He said the lighter glass also has a benefit in body engineering because it helps automakers reduce the weight above the vehicle’s beltline. Thus, the use of Corning Glass offers the dual benefits of weight reduction and better performance, which is rare. Corning also has drawn the interest of automakers by partnering with the renowned French supplier of glass products, Saint-Gobain. Earlier, Corning would make just the Gorilla Glass and then send it to suppliers who would make products that are suitable for the automotive industry from the glass like vehicle windshields. Now that the company has signed the new partnership with Saint-Gobain, it is planning to produce windshields itself, through the Saint-Gobain partnership. This is meant to expedite the process of getting the products into vehicles.
