Cruise and General Motors on Tuesday announced they have entered a long-term strategic relationship with Microsoft to accelerate the commercialization of self-driving vehicles. The companies will bring together their software and hardware engineering excellence, cloud computing capabilities, manufacturing know-how and partner ecosystem to transform transportation to create a safer, cleaner, and more accessible world for everyone.

“Our mission to bring safer, better, and more affordable transportation to everyone isn’t just a tech race – it’s also a trust race,” said Cruise CEO Dan Ammann. “Microsoft, as the gold standard in the trustworthy democratization of technology, will be a force multiplier for us as we commercialize our fleet of self-driving, all-electric, shared vehicles.”

To unlock the potential of cloud computing for self-driving vehicles, Cruise will leverage Azure, Microsoft’s cloud and edge computing platform, to commercialize its unique autonomous vehicle solutions at scale. Microsoft, as Cruise’s preferred cloud provider, will also tap into Cruise’s deep industry expertise to enhance its customer-driven product innovation and serve transportation companies across the globe through continued investment in Azure.

Microsoft will join General Motors, Honda and institutional investors in a combined new equity investment of more than $2 billion in Cruise, bringing the post-money valuation of Cruise to $30 billion.

“Advances in digital technology are redefining every aspect of our work and life, including how we move people and goods,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “As Cruise and GM’s preferred cloud, we will apply the power of Azure to help them scale and make autonomous transportation mainstream.”

“Microsoft is a great addition to the team as we drive toward a future world of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “Microsoft will help us accelerate the commercialization of Cruise’s all-electric, self-driving vehicles and help GM realize even more benefits from cloud computing as we launch 30 new electric vehicles globally by 2025 and create new businesses and services to drive growth.”

In addition, GM will work with Microsoft as its preferred public cloud provider to accelerate its digitization initiatives, including collaboration, storage, artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities. GM will explore opportunities with Microsoft to streamline operations across digital supply chains, foster productivity and bring new mobility services to customers faster.

General Motors announced today a new business, BrightDrop, which will offer an ecosystem of electric first-to-last-mile products, software and services to empower delivery and logistics companies to move goods more efficiently. These BrightDrop solutions are designed to help businesses lower costs, maximize productivity, improve employee safety and freight security, and support overall sustainability efforts.

“BrightDrop offers a smarter way to deliver goods and services,” said Mary Barra GM Chairman and CEO. “We are building on our significant expertise in electrification, mobility applications, telematics and fleet management, with a new one-stop-shop solution for commercial customers to move goods in a better, more sustainable way.”

BrightDrop was born out of GM’s Global Innovation organization and joins the lineup of other recently launched Global Innovation startups, such as OnStar Insurance, OnStar Guardian and GM Defense. From a growth strategy standpoint, this new business will unlock areas of B2B, expansion of the Ultium platform and software and service opportunities.

GM estimates that by 2025, the combined market opportunity for parcel, food delivery and reverse logistics in the U.S. will be over $850 billion. According to the World Economic Forum, demand for urban last-mile delivery, fueled by e-commerce, is expected to grow by 78 percent by 2030, leading to a 36 percent increase in delivery vehicles in the world’s top 100 cities. At the same time, this increase in demand is expected to cause delivery-related carbon emissions to rise by nearly one-third.

To help meet this surge in demand, while reducing the impact on the planet, BrightDrop is developing an integrated set of solutions to help improve almost every aspect of first-to-last-mile delivery. The BrightDrop ecosystem includes:

First-to-last-mile products

BrightDrop EP1 – BrightDrop’s first product to market, the EP1, will be a propulsion-assisted, electric pallet developed to easily move goods over short distances – for example, from the delivery vehicle to the customer’s front door. Available in early 2021, the EP1 can help reduce package touch points, costs and physical strain on delivery drivers. EP1 features and benefits include:

  • Built-in electric hub motor with adjustable speed up to 3 mph depending on operator’s walking pace.
  • Maneuverable in tight spaces.
  • Carries and secures approximately 23 total cubic feet of cargo.
  • Payload capacity of 200 pounds.
  • Adjustable shelving organizes contents.
  • Lockable cabinet doors allow for secure, remote access to contents.

BrightDrop EV600 – BrightDrop’s second product to market will be the EV600 — an electric light commercial vehicle purpose-built for the delivery of goods and services over long ranges. It will combine zero-emissions driving with a range of advanced safety and convenience features more common in consumer electric vehicles. EV600 features and benefits include:

  • Powered by the Ultium battery system, the EV600 is targeted to have an estimated range of up to 250 miles on a full charge 1.
  • Peak charge rate of up to 170 miles of EV range per hour via 120kW DC fast charging.
  • Over 600 cubic feet of cargo area.
  • Available at a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds.
  • Segment leading safety features
    • Standard safety features2 include: Front and Rear Park Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, IntelliBeam automatic high beams and HD Rear Vision Camera.
    • Additional available safety and driver assistance features include: Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Blind Zone Steering Assist, Reverse Automatic Braking, HD Surround Vision, Rear Pedestrian Alert, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, among others.
  • Cargo area security system with motion sensors to help keep cargo secure.
  • A 13.4-inch-diagonal, full-color infotainment screen.
  • Front sliding pocket doors, wide cabin walkways and a large auto-open cargo bulkhead door all contribute to optimize driver efficiency.

Early customer interest in the EV600 has been strong, with the first vehicles to be delivered by the end of this year. BrightDrop expects to make the EV600s available to more customers to order starting in early 2022.

Software-enabled services

BrightDrop offers an integrated, cloud-based software platform, which provides customers visibility and access to their BrightDrop products through both web and mobile interfaces. Built-in connectivity provides businesses with detailed data and insights that can help improve overall operations, including route efficiency, asset utilization and product upgrades. Drivers and couriers can utilize the mobile application for a variety of tasks.

BrightDrop mobile asset management – EP1 connectivity provides customers real-time features, including location monitoring, battery status, remote commands to lock and unlock, and over-the-air updates of connected features.

BrightDrop EV fleet management – EV600 connectivity provides fleet operators remote access, real-time location, battery and charging management, driver safety coaching and incident recording, remote diagnostics, safety alerts and predictive maintenance insights, and over-the-air updates.

Future conceptsThe EP1 and EV600 are only the beginning. BrightDrop will continue to grow its product offerings over time to include a portfolio of integrated, zero-emissions products to help drive further efficiencies and address emerging customer needs. A number of concepts are being explored, such as a medium-distance solution that transports multiple EP1s, and a rapid load delivery vehicle concept.

Innovating with FedEx Express

BrightDrop is the result of extensive research and listening to challenges faced by delivery customers and then leveraging GM expertise to develop real-life solutions. An EP1 pilot program has already been completed in partnership with FedEx Express. During the pilot, FedEx Express couriers were able to effectively and safely handle 25 percent more packages per day with the EP1s. FedEx Express couriers shared feedback that the EP1s were easy to maneuver and reduced physical strain.

With plans to continue innovating, BrightDrop and FedEx Express have another pilot scheduled to take place in one of the biggest urban centers of the U.S. this quarter. FedEx Express is also slated to be the first customer of the EV600, receiving their vehicles later this year.

“Our need for reliable, sustainable transportation has never been more important,” said Richard Smith, FedEx Express regional president of the Americas and executive vice president of global support. “BrightDrop is a perfect example of the innovations we are adopting to transform our company as time-definite express transportation continues to grow. With this new suite of products, we will help improve the safety, security and timeliness of FedEx Express deliveries, while reducing our environmental impact and protecting the well-being of our couriers.”

BrightDrop operations

Travis Katz has joined BrightDrop as president and CEO from venture capital firm Redpoint Ventures where he was an entrepreneur-in-residence. Katz has an extensive background as a technology leader, entrepreneur and investor. This, combined with his track record of scaling global businesses, will help BrightDrop further GM’s vision of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion.

BrightDrop will initially serve customers in the U.S. and Canada. It will have a customer support team to assist with every aspect of operating and servicing BrightDrop products, including supporting charging and infrastructure installation, advising on upfitting services, and retrofitting a current fleet vehicle to integrate with BrightDrop products. BrightDrop support services will also assist with maintenance needs, including securing parts and scheduling repairs.

Customers will connect with BrightDrop through an independent sales and service network, leveraging a newly established BrightDrop dealer network to support vehicle sales and service.

General Motors’ (GM) job postings rebounded from 23 in May to 308 in June 2020 after remaining subdued for the past few months, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics Platform. While June’s figures were noted to be the highest of all months during the first half (H1) of 2020, hiring post shutdown may not be all that easy for the company.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, says: “Workers are likely to prefer to remain unemployed and claim the federal COVID-19 Aid (offering US$600 per week), along with additional state unemployment benefits. GM has also been facing a catch-22 situation, with labor unions asking to close plants in some states experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases – all the while the company is feeling the pressure to increase production.”

The company remains focused on the development of electric and autonomous vehicles under its Cruise mission. GM sees massive opportunity in the EV space and has already laid down a roadmap that could see US$20bn investments over the next five years and launch of around 20 EV models by 2023.

David Leggett, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “As the automotive industry recovers from the impact of COVID-19, EVs are emerging as a sustainability growth pole, with new product introductions and sales set to rise sharply. GlobalData forecasts that, by 2030, the global electric light vehicle market will be in excess of 12 million units a year compared with under 2.5 million in 2020, so GM will be eager to tap into this market.”

Bose continues: “Although GM looks to be optimistic, a lot will depend on how the demand for new vehicles shapes up. It will be interesting to see if the hiring momentum persists during the coming months.

Following President Trump’s Defense Production Act, GM was forced to halt automotive production from late March, and only started resuming production in mid-May.

Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, says: “The spike in job postings seems to be in line with the company’s increase in production capacity in some of its facilities following GM’s CEO Mary Barra’s statement in June 2020 that hinted at returning back to full production by the end of the month.

“Due to production suspension, inventories remained low at dealers. This spurred the company to increase production capacity – under which shift operations of its three mid-and-full size pickup assembly plants in the US were increased from one to three while three crossover assembly plants in the US and Canada started operating in two production shifts.

Bose adds: “The upward hiring trend could be an indication that GM, after a temporary halt due to COVID-19, is again gearing up for its ambitious EV and defense programs.”

Moreover, encouraged by the recent US$214.3m US defense contract win to build new infantry squad vehicles, GM could also look to make more gains in this space. A deep dive into GlobalData’s Job Analytics database reveals a posting for ‘Director, Defense Communications’ on June 17, 2020.

General Motors today released its 10th annual Sustainability Report, providing transparency and accountability on its progress and key accomplishments. The report outlines GM’s stance on key issues like environmental stewardship, safety, inclusion, and health and well-being.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, GM has remained committed to its vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. In March, GM debuted its new Ultium battery technology, which will enable GM to offer an EV for everyone. And while the pandemic caused GM to temporarily suspend operations in the United States, the company continued to make progress on its electric vehicle development, and all Ultium platform EVs remain on schedule.

GM is also on track to:

  • Allocate more than $20 billion of capital and engineering resources to its electric and autonomous vehicle programs between 2020 and 2025.
  • Continue site preparation at GM and LG Chem’s joint venture cell manufacturing plant, Ultium Cells LLC, in Lordstown, Ohio.
  • Deliver EVs that will allow GM to compete for nearly every customer, from those seeking a high-performance machine to a full-size truck. The Ultium battery enables a breadth of vehicles to be built across brands and segments on the same platform. Upcoming products include the Cadillac LYRIQ, which will go into production in 2022; the GMC HUMMER EV, which will go into production in late 2021; and the Cruise Origin.

GM also recognizes the need for companies to leverage resources and leadership to drive positive change for the common good. During the pandemic, GM partnered with Ventec Life Systems to build 30,000 ventilators at GM’s Kokomo, Indiana facility. In addition to building ventilators, GM employees are producing face masks at facilities in Brazil, China, Mexico, Canada and the United States. All production is on track, with each site producing millions of face masks each month to help the communities where GM employees live and work.

This is the first sustainability report to be released since GM made a commitment to become the most inclusive company in the world. To achieve this goal, GM commissioned an Inclusion Advisory Board. Chaired by GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra, the board consists of internal and external advisors dedicated to guiding GM’s commitment to building a culture that is safe and equitable.

“The past several months have been difficult and our world has changed. As we move through the world in a new way, GM is as determined as ever to create solutions that lead to a better future for all,” said Barra. “GM remains focused on delivering on our vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, while becoming the most inclusive company in the world.”

Highlights from the 2019 Sustainability Report include:

  • GM’s accelerated sustainability commitments to:
    • Source 100 percent of electricity from renewable sources in the U.S. by 2030 and globally by 2040, a full decade earlier than previously announced.
    • Continue recycling 100 percent of end-of-life EV batteries.
    • Establish a sustainable material target of at least 50 percent by 2030 for all vehicles.
  • Despite significant macro challenges, all of GM’s Ultium-powered EVs remain on track for production, including Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC HUMMER EV truck and Cruise Origin.
  • For the first time, GM was named one of the 2020 World’s Most Ethical Companiesby Ethisphere.
  • GM has consistently and publicly advocated for climate action and awareness, as well as policies that put a value on carbon. The company’s global commitment to improving fuel economy, reducing emissions and driving an all-electric, zero-emissions future is unwavering, regardless of any modifications to existing emissions standards currently under review in the United States.
  • Available advanced technology features such as Automatic Emergency Braking with Forward Collision Warning and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning have shown a significant reduction in certain types of crashes in the field, according to a study* released last year.
  • In 2020, GM announced an enhanced version of Super Cruise that will be introduced on the 2021 Cadillac CT5, CT4 and Escalade.
  • GM brought expertise in automotive design, safety testing and proven quality methods refined over more than a century to Cruise, its majority-owned self-driving car subsidiary.
  • In the first half of 2020, GM confronted COVID-19 by prioritizing the health and safety of employees and shutting down facilities around the world; manufacturing lifesaving ventilators and personal protective equipment; working within communities to share best practices for safely reopening businesses; and providing much-needed financial relief in the form of community grants.

GM is the highest ranked automaker of 15 companies surveyed in the J.D. Power 2020 Initial Quality Study. The 2020 Chevrolet Sonic achieved the best score of any model in the study, and GM’s Yantai Dongyue North in China won the J.D. Power Platinum Award for plant quality as the highest ranked automotive manufacturing facility in the world.

Chevrolet ranked third overall among all brands and Cadillac finished third among all premium brands. Additionally, Cadillac earned the most segment awards among premium brands.

J.D. Power IQS measures components that fail and features that are difficult to use, hard to understand or don’t work the way owners want. This year’s study examines problems experienced by owners of new 2020 model-year vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

IQS and the plant quality awards, which provide manufacturers with information to identify problems and drive product improvement, were conducted from February through May 2020.

Overall, GM vehicles won six of 26 vehicle segment IQS awards, including:

  • 2020 Cadillac CT5 – Midsize Premium Car
  • 2020 Cadillac CT6 – Upper Midsize Premium Car
  • 2020 Cadillac Escalade – Large Premium SUV
  • 2020 Cadillac XT4 – Compact Premium SUV
  • 2020 Chevrolet Malibu – Midsize Car
  • 2020 Chevrolet Sonic – Small Car

“This success is the result of a focused effort across the entire GM enterprise from design to product development, manufacturing, Customer Care and Aftersales, sales, service and marketing, our dealers and others,” said Tony Francavilla, GM vice president of global quality. “We celebrate these wins and will remain focused on delivering quality vehicles for our customers.”

Eight additional 2020 GM vehicles ranked in the top three of their respective segments:

  • Buick Encore
  • Chevrolet Blazer
  • Chevrolet Colorado
  • Chevrolet Equinox
  • Chevrolet Silverado HD
  • Chevrolet Tahoe
  • Chevrolet Trax
  • GMC Sierra

GM’s Yantai Dongyue plant with the company’s joint venture SAIC-GM, which builds the Buick Envision, topped all auto manufacturing facilities worldwide for having the fewest defects or malfunctions from the period of February through May 2020. Yantai Dongyue won a Silver Award for plant quality last year and a Bronze Award the previous year.

GM last earned the top ranking in the J.D. Power IQS study in 2013. The company finished third among all automakers last year.

As part of the partnership, Honda will deal exclusively with the design of the exteriors and interiors of the new EVs and the platform will be engineered to support the conventional driving character of Honda’s vehicles. The vehicles will be produced leveraging the combined development expertise of both companies and will come off the production lines of GM’s factories in North America. They are expected to be available at the retail level from the beginning of the 2024 model year and are meant to cater for the demand for Honda vehicles in the US and Canadian markets.

The two automotive partners are already engaged in a joint project related to electrification. This project covers the development of fuel cells and a concept vehicle called the Cruise Origin that had made its debut in San Francisco earlier in 2020. The Cruise Origin is a truly futuristic vehicle and is meant to be an electrified, autonomous and shared vehicle. Honda had also joined hands with GM for its battery module development efforts in 2018.

Commenting on the collaboration related to the development of the electric Honda models, Rick Schostek, executive vice-president, American Honda Motor Co said the collaboration would leverage the strength of both the companies, and that their combined scale and manufacturing efficiencies would eventually provide greater value to customers. It is expected that the expansion of the partnership between the two automotive giants would unlock economies of scale that would expedite Honda’s electrification roadmap and thus advance its industry-leading efforts to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. The two companies are also in discussions regarding further expansion of their partnership.

According to Doug Parks, executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, General Motors: “This agreement builds on our proven relationship with Honda, and further validates the technical advancements and capabilities of our Ultium batteries and our all-new EV platform. Importantly, it is another step on our journey to an all-electric future and delivering a profitable EV business through increased scale and capacity utilization. We have a terrific history of working closely with Honda, and this new collaboration builds on our relationship and like-minded objectives.”

As part of the agreement regarding joint development of electric vehicles, Honda would be incorporating GM’s OnStar safety and security services into the two EVs. These services would be seamlessly integrated with HondaLink. Honda also plans to make GM’s hands-free advanced driver-assist technology available in the two new EV models.

The three biggest automakers based in Detroit, the heartland of the automotive industry in the United States teamed up with United Auto Workers (UAW to form a coronavirus task force. GM, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles teamed up with UAW to form a task force that will work to protect the employees at the factories of the automakers from the risk of COVID-19, the disease that the coronavirus causes.

The task force will be helmed by UAW President Rory Gamble and the leaders of the respective automotive manufacturers. They will include May Barra, GM Chairman and CEO, Bill Ford who is Ford Executive Chairman, Jim Hackett, Ford President and CEO and Michael Manley who is the CEO of FCA.

The leaders of the three automotive manufacturers said in a joint statement, “This is a fluid and unprecedented situation, and the task force will move quickly to build on the wide-ranging preventive measures we have put in place. We are all coming together to help keep our workforces safe and healthy.”

According to Gamble, the task force will consider all options that will provide protection against exposure to the virus. The task force will coordinate efforts to prevent the spread of the disease and will take a wide range of actions. These actions can range from enhanced visitor screening to greater level of cleaning and sanitizing of common areas and touch points. The task force will also formulate safety protocols for people with potential exposure, as well as those who exhibit flu-like symptoms.

Arm Holdings, a company that specializes in technology for electronic chips has announced that it would be collaborating with automakers like Toyota and General Motors. The British firm which is owned by the Japanese company, Softbank Group Corp will be collaborating with these companies on a project to establish common computing systems for self-driving cars.

Arm does not make chips but does supply the technology that is used for the processors in devices like smartphones.. The company had started working with automotive firms back in the late 1990s, when car manufacturers first began using computer chips in their models for functions like engine control and diagnostics.

Arm ahs said that it would be a part of an effort to create the Autonomous Vehicle Computing Consortium, or AVCC, with suppliers like Bosch, Denso, Continental and the two automotive manufacturers. Semiconductor companies, Nvidia Corp and NXP Semiconductors, which use Arm’s technology in their chips will also be a part of the consortium.

It is expected that the use of chips in vehicles will grow at an exponential rate in the future with the advent of electric and autonomous cars. Currently, test vehicles which are being used to develop self-driving software use the kind of chips that are used in data centers and need a lot of electric power. Both chip manufacturers and car manufacturers agree that more efficient and smaller chips are the need of the hour for making cheaper and more efficient cars that can be used by the general public.

“I just came back from trips in the U.S. and China and had the opportunity to ride in four different types of autonomous vehicles. They were great prototype platforms for proving the software, but when I asked to look at the electronics powering these vehicles, it literally was servers in trunks,” Chet Babla, Arm’s vice president of automotive, told Reuters in an interview. “We’ve got a long way to go.”

The AVCC will serve as an independent group that will be funded through membership fees from the companies that join. The outcome of the work done by the member companies will be available to non-members.

The consortium’s first task will be to set up a common computing architecture so that it will be easier for automotive companies to develop software that will work on chips from different suppliers.

“The massive amount of technological innovation required to power fully self-driving vehicles at scale requires collaboration at an industry level,” Massimo Osella, chairman of the new group’s board and a lab group manager for research and development at GM, said in a statement.
