Continental used the 2017 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show to present two new tyre technology concepts that can enhance comfort and road safety: ContiSense and ContiAdapt. The two systems enable continuous tyre condition monitoring and situation-matched adaptation of tyre performance characteristics to prevailing road conditions. Both technologies made their public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA).

ContiSense is based on the development of electrically conductive rubber compounds that enable electric signals to be sent from a sensor in the tyre to a receiver in the car. Rubber-based sensors monitor continuously both tread depth and temperature. If the measured values are above or below predefined limits, the system at once alerts the driver. If anything penetrates the tread, a circuit in the tyre is closed, also triggering an immediate warning for the driver – faster than the systems used to date, which only warn the driver when the tyre pressure has already begun to fall. ContiSense system will feature additional sensors that can also be utilised individually, allowing information about the road surface, such as its temperature or the presence of snow, to be passed from tyre to driver. The data can be transmitted to the vehicle electronics or via bluetooth to a smartphone.

ContiAdapt combines micro-compressors integrated into the wheel to adjust the tyre pressure with a variable-width rim. The system can modify the size of the contact patch under different road conditions and this can make a significant difference when it comes to both safety and comfort. Four different combinations allow perfect adaptation to wet, uneven, slippery and normal conditions. For example, a smaller contact patch combined with high tyre pressure make for low rolling resistance and energy-efficient driving on smooth, dry roads. By contrast, the combination of a larger contact patch with lower tyre pressure delivers ideal grip on slippery roads. The system also permits very low tyre pressures of below 1 bar to be set, to help ease the vehicle out of a parking space in deep snow, for example, or traverse a dangerous stretch of black ice.

ContiSense and ContiAdapt are joined by a concept tyre that enables the benefits of both systems to be fully leveraged. The tyre design features three different tread zones for driving on wet, slippery or dry surfaces. Depending on the tyre pressure and rim width, different tread zones are activated and the concept tyre adopts the required “footprint” in each case. In this way, the tyre characteristics adapt to the prevailing road conditions or driver preferences.

Continental feels that both tyre technology concepts offer immense potential when it comes to future of mobility as tyres are adapted to meet the needs of automated driving and electrification. Low rolling resistance, for example, makes it possible for electric cars to cover greater distances on a single charge. At the same time, the tyres can be adapted to suit the driver’s personal preferences or in response to sudden changes in the weather.

According to Continental, these concepts are the next step in the development of the REDI sensor, brought to market by Continental in 2014, and helping to establish smart communication between vehicle and tyre. The new tyre technology concepts follow on from the two established mobility technologies ContiSeal, for the automatic sealing of punctures, and ContiSilent, for a tangible reduction in tyre/road noise.

Hankook Tyre exhibited again at the IAA 2017 show in Frankfurt, Germany, the largest automotive show in the world with 230.000sqm of exhibition space and an estimated 932,000 visitors. The show, which is popularly known as the Frankfurt Motor Show is one of the key automotive trade shows in Europe.

This year, the show had “Future Now” as its motto and in line with this theme, Hankook presented tyre technologies of the future at its booth. Along with design ideas for the mobility concepts of the future, Hankook emphasized the innovations it has made in premium original fitment tyres and its current range of winter tyres.

Hankook is increasingly gaining traction in Europe as a supplier of OE tyres to leading car manufacturers like Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche and VW. As part of its expansion, the company has also set up a new development centre in Korea, the “Technodome” and its very own testing ground for winter tyres in Finland, the “Technotrac”.

In line with the 2017 motto of the IAA, Hankook’s booth highlighted the latest trends and developments in the market. In addition to a new summer product, Hankook showcased its latest range of winter tyres, which included its eco-friendly high-performance winter tyre series i*cept. The i*cept range has been extended by several sizes and the tyres of this series were developed using a special silica compound that makes them more suitable for conditions in central and western Europe.

Visitors to the Hankook booth were asked to use the Next Driving Lab simulator to experience “Future Now”. Their driving experience in the simulator involved the futuristic concept tyre “Ball Pin Tyre”, which was simulated on a large screen with an interactive 360-degree view.

Hankook fans who visited the microsite, win.hankooktire.com before the show had a chance to win several attractive prizes like a set of tyres, an exclusive Hankook IAA VIP package for two or entrance tickets to the trade show. Celebrities at the Hankook booth eho interacted with visitors included popular TV presenter Sidney Hoffmann from the German automobile TV Show PS Profis, football players from Champions League Team Borussia Dortmund and current DTM drivers. Another highlight of the Hankook booth, especially for football fans was the official UEFA Europa League trophy which was displayed at the booth.

Sensata Technologies, which specializes in providing sensors to the automotive, heavy vehicle, aerospace and industrial industries used the Frankfurt Motor Show to highlight some of its latest sensor technologies. These technologies are capable of supporting connectivity, electrification and automated driving, the latest trends in the automotive industry.

Commenting on the company’s participation in the show, Paul Chawla, senior vice president, performance sensing, Europe and South America said that Sensata is a sensor supplier having more than 30 years of experience at the forefront of new developments in the industry and hence is in a position to support these emerging areas for the company’s automotive clients.

The highlight of Sensata’s booth at the show was a new solid-state LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensor for highly automated driving cars. LiDAR plays a crucial role in the development of autonomous and highly automated driving vehicles and is indispensable for detecting and classifying objects that are in the vehicle’s path. Sensata developed the S3 sensor that was displayed at its booth in partnership with Quanergy Systems, the S3 sensor will be on display at the show.

The S3 LiDAR sensor uses the Optical Phased Array concept to scan the field of view and is essentially a scanning LiDAR sensor with no moving components, thus significantly enhancing the reliability of the automated driving system. Another benefit that the S3 sensor offers is that it is capable of using dynamic laser beam positioning to scan areas of interest on demand within the field of view on demand without the necessity of going through the entire field of view sequentially.

Steve Beringhause, chief technology officer and executive vice president, Performance Sensing, Auto, for Sensata Technologies, said that almost every car on the road currently is equipped with sensors and technology from Sensata, and the company is a leader in pressure and high temperature sensing. Sensata is now expediting investments in new technologies like LiDAR and vehicle health management.

Sensata is working with Quanergy on a solid-state, optical-phased array LiDAR sensor. These sensors offer plenty of scope for large scale adoption in automated cars thanks to their compactness, lack of moving parts and their reliability and strong performance.

Sensata also used the Frankfurt Motor Show to highlight its range of vehicle health management sensors.

Group Michelin joined hands with Maxion Wheels to work on a car wheel that will comprise flexible rubber flanges. These flanges can significantly enhance ride comfort as they will absorb the impact from potholes and curbs.

Called the Michelin Acorus, the wheel can be used in tandem with all tires that are available in the market. It consists of an alloy rim that is narrower than normal, two rubber flanges and an optional cosmetic insert in order to protect the alloy wheel. The two companies debuted the new product at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Michelin Acorus was taken through tests during which a 285/30R21 tire was driven through a pothole. When the tyre was used in tandem with a standard rim version, it was punctured at 17 mph. When the Michelin Acorus flexible wheel was used, the tyre did not sustain damage or get punctured at any speed.

The name Acorus is derived from Acorus Calamus, the scientific name of a reed like plant that grows in wetlands. Just like a reed bends but does not break, the Michelin Acorus absorbs the impact of bumps and potholes on the road while staying strong.

Michelin Chief Operating Officer Florent Menegaux said that the new wheel would be particularly useful today as it has now become trendy for automotive manufacturers put larger and larger wheels on their cars.He said that the use of large shiny alloy wheels have now become an integral part of the design of modern cars. The downside is that the low profile tires that are developed as part of this trend have short sidewalls that are more vulnerable to damage on roads having potholes.

Maxion Wheels CEO Pieter Klinkers called the development a “game changer for wheels,” offering safety, economy and comfort.

Other benefits that the Michelin Acorus offers include lower noise levels and better ride comfort when it comes to low-profile fitments.

Michelin will work with Maxion Wheels, which is one of the frontrunners in the wheel sector business, to commercialize the flexible wheel. Initially, the Michelin Acorus will be available in 19-inch and larger rim diameter sizes to makers of premium vehicles.

Michelin said that the company’s “Incubator Program” within its research group helped to expedite the development of the design.

Maxion Wheels is a division of Iochpe-Maxion S.A., which is one of the leading manufacturers of wheels for all kinds of vehicles including passenger cars, light trucks, buses, commercial trucks and trailers.

 At the Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller said that despite the fallout of the diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen would continue to develop diesel powertrains. In an interview he gave to CNBC, he said that the diesel vehicles that the company is making currently are clean and are fully compliant with the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) requirements in addition to meeting the requirements and needs of the customers.

Many countries like UK, France and India have announced plans to slowly phase out vehicles that are powered by internal combustion engines with the introduction of measures like toxin taxes and scrappage schemes.

Mueller expressed his belief that at least for the next 10 to 20 years vehicles having combustion engines and electrified drive systems would continue to co-exist. He believes that ultimately, it should be down to the customer as to what kind of vehicle they would prefer to buy and use.

At least 11 million vehicles made by Volkswagen were affected by the diesel emissions scandal that broke in September 2015 when the company admitted that it had used defeat devices to cheat on emissions tests from 2006 to 2015.

While reiterating its faith in its diesel engine technology, the company has one foot firmly in the future. It used its pre-Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 to reveal its revised investment strategy as part of which it would invest USD 84 billion in electric cars and battery technology. Of this USD 50 billion would be invested in battery production in order to its big new range of electric vehicles belonging to different categories. Volkswagen has grand plans to 300 electric vehicle models to the market by 2030 and has doubled the amount it had planned to spend on development of electric vehicles from USD 10 million to USD 20 million.

The focus on emissions and clean vehicles has prompted many suppliers like seal manufacturer Freudenberg Sealing Technologies to develop technologies and products for e-mobility. Claus Möhlenkamp, CEO of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies said that while on one hand, the company is working on developing technologies to make conventional internal combustion engines more efficient, on the other hand, it is investing heavily in developing components for new powertrain technologies so that it could have a role in shaping mobility of the future.

Möhlenkamp said the company expects global markets to move at very different speeds and take different technological paths. One thing is clear and that is the fact that as time moves on, conventional internal combustion engines will become less and less important with the market share of such vehicles in Europe and North America declining to 30 percent by 2030.

Hence, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies is focusing heavily on the development of sealing innovations for electric vehicles, especially when it comes to batteries as these batteries will be the main components of the new powertrains, both in the case of hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

The company has made significant advances in battery safety and thermal management. One example is a new housing seal that optimizes pressure compensation, which is a key issue for electric mobility.

One barrier to large scale adoption of electric vehicles is their high cost. Freudenberg Sealing Technologies is working on making small volume production of electric cars more economical with an innovative seal for the housings of traction batteries. The patented ‘Profile to Gasket’ concept, or P2G, was developed specifically especially for annual volumes of up to 5,000 batteries. The seals that were available till now were for high-volume production. Batteries having high power densities and hence greater level of cooling need flat seals or Plug & Seals, which Freudenberg Sealing Technologies manufactures.

Other areas related to electric mobility that the company is working on include thermal management and two-component housings for sensors and other electronic components. Another area under the spotlight is lightweight construction, with the use of plastics that can insulate or conduct heat or electricity.

Electric motors also need mechanical face seals, while Simmerring shaft seals are an integral part of the transmissions of electrically-powered vehicles. The housings for sophisticated control electronics also need to be sealed.

“Our long-term goal is to provide made-to-order products for nearly all the components of an electric vehicle,” Möhlenkamp said.

When it comes to making convention internal combustion engines more efficient, Fredenberg Sealing Technologies is working on several emission-reducing products. Its LESS (Low Emission Sealing Solutions) portfolio comprises innovative sealing solutions that can minimize friction, optimize the combustion process, save weight and thus reduce energy consumption and emissions sustainably. One example is the gas-lubricated mechanical face seal Levitex that can decrease CO2 emissions by up to 1 gram of CO2 per kilometre driven. The reduction in wear leads to long operating lives. With the seal’s greater pressure stability, totally new directions in engine development are opening up.

In the case of transmission development, Freudenberg has developed the sealing ring Levitas for rotary feedthroughs in transmissions. It ‘floats’ on a hydrodynamic oil film that it generates itself, reducing wear to an absolute minimum. This leads to a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions. Even when there is no physical contact between the seal ring and shaft, the sealing function is completely guaranteed.

Mercedes-Benz is all set to unveil its first series-production plug-in fuel-cell model, the GLC F-Cell, at the Frankfurt Motor Show which is scheduled to be held next week.

After an extensive development program, the new dual-powered model will be available at the retail level in select markets in 2018.

The zero-emission GLC F-Cell’s fuel-cell stack was developed jointly by Ford and the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, Daimler as part of the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC) joint venture, which is based in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

In the vehicle, upto 8.8 lbs. (4 kg) of hydrogen is stored at 10,150 psi (700 bar) in two carbon-fiber-encased tanks. These tanks are mounted within the GLC F-Cell’s floor and it is said that refilling can be completed in just three minutes. Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed further details about the output of the fuel-cell stack.

The automaker did confirm that in the vehicle, the hydrogen fuel-cell stack will work in tandem with a 9-kWh lithium-ion battery to provide motorists with an overall range of up to 310 miles (500 km), and of this 500 kilometers, it is said that about 50 kilometers will be derived from the electricity that is generated by the battery.

As in the case of the other gasoline-electric hybrids that Mercedes has made, the battery can be recharged by using an electrical outlet or through the energy obtained through braking and coasting.

Mercedes says that over 11 million miles (17.7 million kilometers) have been covered as part of testing during development of the GLC F-Cell. The new model will be available to retail customers.

Daimler might have exhibited a lot of style and flair for design with its range of compact Smart ForTwo range, but the Smart cars were not really profitable. The company looks like it is trying to change this with its plans to showcase a Smart pure electric concept car at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The electric car would be an ideal fit for the self-driving, shared urban mobility concept that will gain increasing acceptance when it comes to future mobility.

Daimler has teased the Smart concept EV on its social media pages like Instagram and is expected to exhibit built-in capabilities for carsharing and full autonomy. It is likely to communicate its intentions to other motorists and the pedestrians on the road with a dynamic billboard-like display screen in its nose, based on the teaser image that Daimler has released.

According to Daimler, the Smart concept EV will be the company’s first vehicle that will reflect its new “CASE” corporate strategy: “Connected, Autonomous, Shared, and Electric.” Smart had been in the new earlier this year with its plans to end sales of all petrol powered models in the United States. The 2018 model-year Smart ForTwos will be electric only.

Smart has not disclosed the details of the engine of the show car that will be displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, but it could be quite similar to that used in the current ForTwo Electric Drive. The current model has a pure-electric powertrain with an output of 80 horsepower, 118-pound feet of torque, and a 17.6-kWh lithium-ion battery that can provide a range of 124 miles in an urban setting.

 

Other models that Daimler will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show include the new EQ electric concept  and Mercedes-AMG’s long awaited Project One hypercar.

BorgWarner, which is one of the market leaders when it comes to clean and efficient technology for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, will unveil new propulsion solutions at the 67th edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show. The International Motor Show (IAA) Cars, Frankfurt a sit is officially known is scheduled to be held from September 14 to 24 this year and will be a platform for key European OEMs and automotive manufacturers to showcase their products and services.

At the show, BorgWarner will focus on the latest trends in the automotive industry such as e-mobility,  connected cars, autonomous driving and urban mobility concepts. It will also use the show to showcase its solutions for the vehicles of the future including a complete range of propulsion systems from internal combustion to hybrid and electric vehicle technology.

Commenting on the company’s participation in the show, James R Verrier, president and CEO, BorgWarner said that in future we are likely to see a wide variety of systems ranging from highly efficient combustion engines to a spectrum of hybrid architectures and pure electric propulsion systems.  He added that to meet the requirements of such a diverse market, the company had a broad portfolio of technologies for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles to facilitate connected and autonomous driving, and to provide support to automotive manufacturers across the globe as they work on dealing with the challenges of the future.

BorgWarner believes that combustion engines will still have relevance in the future and is working on developing more powerful, cleaner and more efficient variants of the internal combustion engine. The demand for hybridization is increasing at a fast rate due to more stringent emissions standards in key markets.

Hence, BorgWarner has worked on many hybrid propulsion architectures, ranging from from P1-type hybrids (where the electric motor is directly attached to the engine) to P4-type hybrids (where the combustion engine and e-motor drive different axles). The company has a comprehensive electrified propulsion portfolio for mild, full and plug-in HEVs.

BorgWarner also has a product range spanning almost all electric propulsion areas including electric motors, power transmission, power electronics and thermal management, enabling the company to support automakers worldwide for their needs.

The concept of mobility has changed drastically in the past few years with the advent of autonomous driving, shared vehicles and electromobility. Adient, one of the top suppliers of automotive seating will use the 2017 edition of the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main to showcase the AI18 demonstrator, its new interior concept for autonomous driving, which will address these three new trends, especially when it comes to the vehicle seating system.
Richard Chung, Vice President Innovation at Adient, explained that consumers will opt for optimal vehicle architecture which can be easily adapted to suit the requirements of a wide range of users who have different requirements and preferences in almost every situation. This need for adaptation will play a key role in the design of vehicle interiors and seating systems.

Adient plans to use five scenarios to demonstrate in the AI18 the degree to which level-3 and level-4 autonomous vehicles could be flexible in the future. Chung said that in addition to a Lounge mode, the AI18 seating system offers Communication, Cargo, Baby Plus and Family modes. Depending on the situation, these modes would provide users with optimum seating arrangements and space and provide them with various usage options and technical aids so that their journey is as comfortable, safe and efficient as possible.

One example is that even in the case of a compact vehicle, in the Lounge mode, passengers benefit from a high degree of comfort and relaxation. The front seats come with an anthropometric pivot and can provide much more support than conventional seats even when reclined far back. Other components that add to the comfort factor include integrated armrests, head restraint, and a separate leg rest which are synchronized to move with the body. There is even an optional massage function.

When it comes to the weight of the vehicle, there are as many as 20 innovations in the AI18 demonstrator in relation to new component geometries, alternative materials and composites to minimize the weight of the vehicle.

Chung said, “Slimmer, lighter seating systems not only play their part in reducing fuel consumption or increasing the range of electric vehicles. They also allow automakers to make best use of the vehicle’s compact dimensions and therefore also increase efficiency in automotive construction at many levels.”
