Didi Chuxing (“DiDi”), the world’s leading mobility and convenience platform, today announced the completion of the first fundraising round of over US$500 million for its autonomous driving subsidiary. The investment will enable DiDi to further enhance safety and efficiency by continuing its investment in advanced research and development of autonomous driving technology and testing, as well as deepen industry cooperation, and accelerate the deployment of autonomous driving services in specific areas in China and abroad.

DiDi first began to develop and test autonomous driving vehicles in 2016. In August 2019, DiDi upgraded its autonomous driving unit into an independent company. This is the first time for DiDi’s autonomous driving business to bring in external funding since its establishment. Led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, this is the single largest fundraising round in China’s autonomous driving sector.

With increased investments in autonomous driving, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) systems and related AI capabilities, DiDi aims to launch autonomous fleet operations in select locations as China seeks to build a comprehensive digital infrastructure network based on 5G, AI and IoT technologies. DiDi also plans to further deepen cooperation with global upstream and downstream auto industry partners towards mass production of autonomous driving vehicles, with the aim of advancing the transformation of the global automotive and transportation industries.

In addition to building its own test fleets, DiDi will leverage the accumulated transportation data from its platform to run simulation tests, largely supplementing existing field test data volume. This will allow DiDi to improve the efficiency of research and development, and facilitate algorithm iteration. DiDi will also gradually apply its experience in safety and offline fleet management obtained from its ride hailing business to the testing and operations of its autonomous fleets in the future.

Currently, DiDi has open-road testing licenses in Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou in China, as well as California in the U.S., including one of the first licenses in Shanghai to pilot manned autonomous mobility services. DiDi’s autonomous driving business is working with Xiaoju Automobile Solutions, DiDi’s one-stop auto solutions platform, and DiDi Finance to explore next-generation integrated mobility solutions, including smart charging networks, fleet maintenance service, as well as insurance programs for autonomous fleets.

99, Didi Chuxing’s Subsidiary in Brazil and the leading transportation platform in the country achieved a historic milestone of one billion trips in a short period of just two years. 99 had been in the news when it becacame the first Brazilian unicorn startup with its acquisition by DiDi.

Brazil is the largest market for ride-hailing applications in Latin America. Currently, 99 has over 600,000 partner drivers, of which women make up a staggering 18 percent and caters to the needs of 18 million passengers spread across more than 1,600 cities. 99’s top markets are São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Curitiba.

DiDi took a stake in 99 in January 2017 and after entering the Latin American market through this acquisition in 2018, DiDi brought its very own branded ride-hailing, taxi-hailing and food delivery services to other markets in the region like Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica.

Engineers and data scientists based in the company’s São Paulo, Beijing and DiDi’s Mountain View, California labs work closely with in-market teams to develop technology solutions that are customized to serve the local transportation needs.

One specific instance is the introduction of safety innovations including special risk analysis algorithms and dynamic geo-fencing technologies in Brazil. Through such measures, the team has reduced major safety incident rates by 60 percent in 2019.

99 is a Brazilian technology company that aims to serve as a connecting link between passengers and drivers through its app and it is part of the global company Didi Chuxing. The company offers five types of mobility services on its platform: 99Pop, 99Taxi, 99Top, 99SCompartilha (carpool) and 99Comfort, as well as its own-branded food delivery service, 99Food.

China’s leading ridesharing firm, Didi Chuxing has announced that it will be teaming up with the government owned car manufacturer, BAIC and Volkswagen to build a fleet of electric taxis and to use more artificial intelligence solutions in their cars.

As part of the deal, Didi will now be having access to vehicles made by BAIC, as well as to technology developed by BAIC’s Xiaoju New Energy Auto Technology Co. (or Jingju) fleet operations and artificial intelligence solutions. Volkswagen’s contribution will be to help Didi to handle the management, sales, operations, repair and maintenance of its services.

Both Volkswagen and Did sent out press releases announcing the collaboration. Didi Chuxing said in its press release that as many as 400,000 new energy vehicles are currently registered with DiDi as part of the world’s largest shared EV (electronic vehicle) network. Many of these are through the company’s partnerships with leading manufacturers of EVs (electronic vehicles) like BYD.

The collaboration is a welcome initiative in light of the fact that China plans to increase the number of electric vehicles in usage by 2030. BAIC had also recently announced that the company plans to end the manufacture and sale of petrol powered models by 2025. Volkswagen is planning to spend billions of euros on the development and production of electrified models.

The composition of the taxi fleets in China has been changing at a swift pace, especially in Shenzhen, where the local government had recently announced that almost all of the public taxi fleet in the city comprises electric-powered vehicles as part of its ‘Shenzhen Blue’ initiative. The outcome of this initiative was that Shenzhen experienced its cleanest air in 15 years throughout 2018. According to a report by the Shenzhen Human Settlement and Environment Commission (SHSEC), this is largely due to the city’s ‘Shenzhen Blue’ project.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has announced that it would be collaborating with Didi Auto Alliance to pursue new smart mobility solutions in China.

The Didi Auto Alliance is an intelligent ride-sharing alliance that was initiated by Didi. The goal of the alliance is to unite all its members to transform the business model of the automotive industry and become the largest full-capacity vehicle operator platform in the world.

Ogi Redzic, senior vice-president of Connected Vehicles and Mobility Services for Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, said like Didi, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance had a vision of clean, safe mobility for all. For Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, China is a key market and the alliance plans to work closely with leading players in the market like Didi to shape the future of smart mobility in China.

Cheng Wei, founder and CEO of Didi, said that as part of the partnership, Didi would be providing services like auto leasing and sales, auto finance, auto service, fleet operation and car-sharing solutions to its partners. The ultimate goal is to create more value for the company’s partners, user community, and society.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi had signed an MoU with Didi back in February this year to explore the likelihood of cooperation in the future for a new electric vehicle car-sharing program in China. Other aspects the new collaborators will explore include the launch of robo-vehicle ride-hailing services, as part of the Alliance 2022 strategic midterm plan launched last year by Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

By the end of its strategic plan, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance plans to launch 12 pure electric models on a global basis, by using common EV platforms and components, and also has plans to launch 40 vehicles with autonomous drive technology globally and to develop robo-vehicle ride-hailing services.

The Alliance had also recently launched Alliance Ventures, a new corporate venture capital fund that will invest up to USD 1 billion to support open innovation in the field of mobility over the next five years.
