Cadillac has provided a sneak peek at the upcoming ultra-luxury, fully electric CELESTIQ show car. Designed to set a new standard for luxury EVs, the CELESTIQ embodies Cadillac’s commitment to reimagine what’s possible in design and technology.

The foundation of CELESTIQ is the modular Ultium battery platform, which enables greater design flexibility. The CELESTIQ design and engineering teams took advantage of the new space and explored opportunities to artfully integrate cutting edge technology. The result is a stunning vehicle with a dramatic presence, a low profile and rearward proportions.

Each vehicle offers a curated selection of hand-crafted materials, and each CELESTIQ will be designed to reflect the individuality of its owner. The vehicles will feature all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering and a full-glass roof.

Inside the cabin, CELESTIQ takes the artful integration of technology to new heights, with a customizable experience for drivers and passengers alike.

CELESTIQ’s roof is expected to be one of the first to feature a four-quadrant, suspended-particle-device smart glass. With this smart glass, each occupant of the vehicle can set their own level of roof transparency. The individualized experience shared by each occupant will be a signature aspect of the Cadillac CELESTIQ.

The driver and front-seat passenger will enjoy a pillar-to-pillar freeform display with active privacy to help mitigate driver distraction while rear-seat passengers have personalized entertainment screens. Console screens between seats in the front and back will separate individualized comfort settings from entertainment displays to minimize distractions.

As Cadillac’s future flagship sedan, CELESTIQ show car embodies Cadillac’s pioneering spirit and focus on setting the standard for luxury EVs.Another major innovation for Cadillac that was revealed at this year’s CES, as part of General Motors’s ‘Everybody In’ campaign, was the Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) air taxi – an electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing. Cadillac teased one of the first uncamouflaged, exterior images of the V-Series Blackwing vehicles, showcasing a tight shot of the cars’ exclusive magnesium wheels. These vehicles will be the only GM products to offer magnesium wheels in the near future.

The wheels shown in the image will be optional on the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing. Inspired by the championship winning Cadillac DPi-V.R race car, magnesium wheels help reduce the unsprung weight of the vehicle, improving ride and handling, and thereby, the overall driver experience. Magnesium has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of all commonly available metals, according to MagnesiumWheels.com.

General Motors will be the first automaker to use an almost completely wireless battery management system, or wBMS, for production electric vehicles. This wireless system, developed with Analog Devices, Inc., will be a primary driver of GM’s ability to ultimately power many different types of electric vehicles from a common set of battery components.

 

The wBMS is expected to drive GM’s Ultium-powered EVs to market faster, as time won’t be needed to develop specific communications systems or redesign complex wiring schemes for each new vehicle. Instead, the wBMS helps to ensure the scalability of Ultium batteries across GM’s future lineup, encompassing different brands and vehicle segments, from heavy-duty trucks to performance vehicles.

 

Much like the pack design of GM’s Ultium batteries, which is flexible enough to incorporate new chemistry over time as technology changes, the wBMS’ basic structure can easily receive new features as software becomes available. With expanded over-the-air updates provided by GM’s all-new Vehicle Intelligence Platform, the system could even be upgraded over time with new software-based features via smartphone-like updates.

 

“Scalability and complexity reduction are a theme with our Ultium batteries – the wireless battery management system is the critical enabler of this amazing flexibility,” said Kent Helfrich, GM executive director of Global Electrification and Battery Systems. “The wireless system represents the epitome of Ultium’s configurability and should help GM build profitable EVs at scale.”

 

The wBMS will help GM’s electric vehicles balance chemistry within the individual battery cell groups for optimal performance. It can also conduct real-time battery pack health checks and refocus the network of modules and sensors as needed – this helps safeguard battery health over the vehicle’s lifespan.

 

By reducing wires within the batteries by up to 90 percent, the wireless system can help extend charging range by creating lighter vehicles overall and opening extra room for more batteries. The space and flexibility created by this reduction in wires not only enables a cleaner design, but also simpler and more streamlined battery restructuring as needed and more robust manufacturing processes.

 

This wireless system also provides a unique repurposing capability for battery reuse in secondary applications more easily than conventional wired monitoring systems. When the wireless packs are capacity-reduced to the point where they are no longer ideal for optimum vehicle performance, but still functional as consistent power supplies, they can be combined with other wireless battery packs to form clean power generators. This can be done without a redesign or overhaul of the battery management system traditionally required in second-life usage.

 

GM’s wireless battery management system is protected by cybersecurity measures that are foundational to the company’s all-new electrical architecture or Vehicle Intelligence Platform. The DNA of this system includes protective features within the hardware and software layers, including protection of wireless communications.

The wireless battery monitoring system will be standard on all planned GM vehicles powered by Ultium batteries.

Many people enjoy driving… until it’s time to park. So why not leave the task to the vehicle?

Ford Motor Company, Bedrock and Bosch are launching a demonstration project with connected Ford test vehicles that can drive and park themselves inside Bedrock’s Assembly Garage in Detroit, in the US, using Bosch smart infrastructure. This is the first U.S. infrastructure-based solution for automated valet parking where the vehicle will park itself inside a parking garage.

The research will take place in the Corktown neighborhood, the site of Ford’s new mobility innovation district, anchored by Michigan Central Station. The district will draw mobility innovators and disruptors from around the world to develop, test, and launch new solutions to solve urban transportation challenges, improve mobility access for everyone and prepare for the increasingly connected and autonomous world ahead.

“We are continually searching for opportunities to expand our leading suite of Ford Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technologies that help people drive more confidently and we believe automated valet parking technology holds great promise,” said Ken Washington, chief technology officer at Ford Motor Company. “Our work with Bosch and Bedrock also aligns with our vision for the future, which includes increasingly automated vehicles that are more aware of their surroundings while requiring less on-board computing to help improve design, packaging and affordability.”

The demonstration project will be on display on the ground floor of Bedrock’s Assembly Garage, the real estate developer’s first residential redevelopment project in the Corktown neighborhood. The project aligns with Bedrock’s vision of combining ground up and historical developments with the newest technology in parking and mobility – including the current installation of the Midwest’s first automated parking stall, which parks and retrieves vehicles in the basement of the Free Press Building using street-level load bays.

“We strive to be at the forefront of parking and mobility initiatives in Detroit because we recognise the importance of interconnectivity between real estate and mobility,” said Heather Wilberger, chief information officer at Bedrock. “In addition to drastically reducing park time, we see this solution as the first step to bringing automated parking to our city, providing the ultimate convenience for our tenants, visitors, neighbourhoods and residents.”

Connected vehicle and smart infrastructure enhance automated parking

The connected Ford test vehicles operate in a highly automated fashion by vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication with Bosch’s intelligent parking infrastructure. The infrastructure sensors recognise and localise the vehicle to guide its parking manoeuvre, including the ability to help avoid pedestrians and other hazards. If the infrastructure senses something in the vehicle’s path, it can stop the vehicle immediately.

“For Bosch, automated valet parking brings together our deep cross-domain experience in mobility and building technologies to deliver a smart infrastructure solution that improves everyday life,” said Mike Mansuetti, president of Bosch in North America. “This technology enables consumers to see the benefit of highly automated technology as the vehicle handles a task such as parking in a garage.”

Upon arriving into the garage, a driver will leave the vehicle in a designated area and use a smartphone app to send the vehicle into an automated parking manoeuvre. Drivers will also use the app to request the return of the vehicle to the designated pick-up area, expediting the parking experience and removing the responsibility of finding the vehicle upon return to the garage.

New mobility requires collaboration

The demonstration project at Assembly Garage brings together one of the world’s largest automakers, Ford, the largest property developer in the City of Detroit, Bedrock, and the world’s largest automotive supplier, Bosch, to demonstrate how organisations are working together on new mobility initiatives.

The demonstration project will enable the three companies to gain valuable insights regarding user experience, vehicle design, parking structure design and application to expand the technology and its application.

“It is exciting and challenging to explore smart vehicles in a smart world. Ford, Bosch and Bedrock have learnt a lot about how cars communicate with infrastructure from the automated valet parking project. We were able to manoeuvre the vehicles safely in a complex environment while maintaining the highest level of safety,” said Joseph Urhahne, Automated Driving Research & Advanced Engineering, Ford of Europe.

Efficient use of space and vehicle services make the case

Automated parking solutions bring value to garage owners by allowing for the more efficient use of spaces inside a parking garage. With automated valet parking, the same amount of space can accommodate up to 20 per cent more vehicles. The solution can be deployed via retrofitted solutions like the one in the Assembly Garage or with embedded infrastructure planned into construction of new garages that enables optimised design for maximum capacity.

In addition to simply parking, a vehicle could also drive itself to areas within the garage for specific services such as vehicle charging or a car wash. During the demonstration project, Ford, Bedrock and Bosch will demonstrate vehicle paths showing how a vehicle would move between service areas and ultimately to a parking spot before the user calls it back to leave the garage.

The renowned founder of Toyota Motor Corporation, was recognized for his extraordinary vision and entrepreneurial spirit and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit. The automotive Hall of Fame showcases the stories of those who have made impressive contributions to the automotive industry and features nearly 800 men and women. It is located at 21400 Oakwood Blvd. Toyoda was one of the five industry who were chosen to be inducted this year.

Kiichiro Toyoda was responsible for expanding Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, a successful textile business that his father, Sakichi Toyoda, established into automotive manufacturing in 1933. Herved as the president of Toyota Motor Corporation from 1941 to 1950 and used his leadership and technical skills to make the company one of the leading companies in the automotive sector.

Commenting on Kiichiro Toyoda’s induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame, Ramzi Hermiz, President and CEO, Shiloh Industries and Board Chairman, Automotive Hall of Fame said that Kiichiro Toyoda had outstanding foresight and innovation and this was demonstrated by his significant contributions to the automotive industry.

Senior executives from Toyota Motors including Chairman of the Board Takeshi Uchiyamada attended the induction and Awards Gala ceremony on July 19. Uchiyamada accepted Kiichiro Toyoda’s award on behalf of the company and the family.
Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corporation said that America was a special place for Kiichiro. He was prompted by the wide prevalence of automobiles in the U.S. cities in the late 1920s to set up an automotive company in Japan.

Toyoda said that Kiichiro had the bold vision to change Toyota’s business model from automatic looms to automobiles without being affected by past successes. With the automotive industry going through a period of great changes, he expressed belief that his grandfather’s message today would be to work hard to help the industry revolutionize the future of mobility, even if success is not immediate.

Toyoda concluded, “I deeply appreciate the Automotive Hall of Fame for inducting my grandfather and our founder.”
The event was highlighted by the presence of a 1936 Toyoda AA replica vehicle, a model which was designed and manufactured under Kiichiro Toyoda’s supervision. This vehicle was on loan from the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The AA was Toyota’s first production model and Kiichiro Toyoda used the production of this model to experiment with waste-free and efficiency-focused production techniques, including the renowned “just-in-time” inventory concept. The vehicle helped pave the way for the renowned “Toyota Production System.”

LG Electronics has announced that the company would be building an EV parts plant that will cover  250,000 square foot in Hazel Park, a suburb of Detroit in the United States. Though LG does not manufacture cars, it does have a vehicle components division that makes components and supplies them to many leading manufacturers like GM. For example, LG supplied key components for GM’s award winning Chevrolet Bolt. Some of the components that the company makes include infotainment systems, electric motors, battery cells and pack, instrument cluster, climate control systems, power inverter, on-board charger and infotainment system.

LG was prompted to make this decision by the fact that it had a revenue of USD 1.5 billion from vehicle components just in the first half of 2017, a 43 percent year-on-year increase from the similar period for 2016 and most of this increase can be attributed to the Bolt. Having a new plant in the United States will make supply to GM easier and will resolve any concerns about tariffs due to imports. The new factory has received a USD 2.9 million grant from the Michigan Business Development Program, and is expected to create 292 jobs for engineers and factory workers.

LG is definitely planning to expand its client list to include other leading automotive manufacturers based in the Detroit area. With many traditional automotive manufacturers shifting their focus from conventional cars to electric vehicles, this is indeed the right time for LG with its expertise in building complex battery packs and other components to set up a plant in the United States.
