The Home of Bentley in Crewe, UK has produced the 80,000th individual, made-to-order example of the Continental GT – the world’s definitive luxury grand tourer. The 80,000th car – a right-hand drive Continental GT V8 in Orange Flame – was handcrafted in the world’s first carbon-neutral factory for luxury car production.

In 1952, the Bentley R-Type Continental made its debut; a Mulliner-bodied coupe with a top speed of just less than 120 mph. It was the fastest four-seater car in the world and very quickly earned a reputation as the ultimate in high-speed luxury.

In 2003, the Continental GT was launched – the first car of the modern Bentley era. Inspired by the R-Type, the first Continental GT established an entirely new market segment – the modern luxury Grand Tourer. Ever since, it has been the unchallenged benchmark for the sector that it founded, with an average of nearly 5,000 examples a year being delivered to customers around the world.

Eighteen years later, Bentley’s skilled craftspeople – many of whom will have worked on the very first example of the Continental GT (still owned by Bentley) – have handcrafted the 80,000th car. Over this period the style, technology, and engineering beneath the car has evolved significantly, seeing an increase of up to 27 percent in peak power, whilst models within the range have also achieved a reduction over the original Continental GT of 48 percent in CO2 emissions.

Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark, comments:

“At its launch in 2003, Bentley redefined the modern grand tourer with the revolutionary Continental GT. Now in 2021, the GT continues to be the ultimate luxury grand tourer, encompassing the latest technology, performance, and style. This success is a testament to the skills of our designers, engineers, and craftspeople here in Crewe.

“I had the pleasure of launching the original GT in 2003 in my first stint at Bentley, and being here for the launch of the latest generation – and the iterations that have followed – has been a source of great pride for me personally. It will continue to be the iconic backbone of the Bentley business for years to come, even as we transition to the world’s leading provider of sustainable luxury mobility.”

The platform beneath the car was upgraded to a Bentley design for the third generation, allowing a totally new stance, proportions, and levels of dynamic ability that raised the bar again. Wrapped in a totally new bodywork design, with sharper lines and more flowing surfaces, the Continental GT remains a stylish and thoroughly contemporary grand tourer.

With a choice of powertrains, one of the most extensive color palettes in the world, and with almost limitless interior options, unique configurations can run into billions of variations. Indeed, there are currently a total of 17 billion ways in which a customer can specify a Continental GT. Beyond that, through the services of Bentley Mulliner – Bentley’s in-house bespoke division – the only limitation is the imagination of the customer. Owning a Continental GT guarantees both individuality and exclusivity, despite being part of a family now 80,000 strong.

The 80,000th vehicle is an eye-catching Continental GT V8 in Orange Flame, finished with the optional Blackline Specification and Styling Specification, both adding to the car’s presence and hinting at the GT’s performance credentials.

A Family Gathering to Celebrate

To mark the production milestone, Bentley drew on its heritage fleet to show the evolution and achievements of the Continental GT since 2003.

Marking the car through its generations were:

  • The very first production Continental GT, VIN 0001, still a taxed-and-tested car on Bentley’s fleet
  • A Continental Supersports coupe, considered by many to be the pinnacle of the first generation GT family
  • A second-generation Continental GT V8 S coupe finished in Jetstream
  • From the current press fleet, a Dragon Red Continental GT Convertible

The Continental GT has also supported Bentley’s long tradition of racing and record-breaking that started in the 1920s when the Bentley Boys set the pace at European circuits.

  • The first Ice Speed Record GT, driven by four-time World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen, which smashed the world ice speed record in 2007.
  • The first-generation Continental GT3 racecar, that returned Bentley to winning ways on the racetrack in 2014.
  • The 2019 Pikes Peak GT, which still holds the Production Class record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
  • The 2020 Ice Race GT, which took part in the GP Ice Race at Zell Am See in February last year on the same weekend that the final member of the line-up – the latest-generation Continental GT3 – won the Bathurst 12 Hour in Australia.

After 18 years and three generations, the Continental GT is still the quintessential grand tourer – phenomenally powerful, beautifully designed and exquisitely crafted.

The luxury pinnacle of the Continental GT family, the Continental GT Mulliner Convertible, made its global debut at Cheval Blanc in St Tropez, as part of a European Summer Tour hosted by Bentley. The Continental GT Mulliner was the first member of the new Collections portfolio introduced by Bentley Mulliner.

Surpassing the industry-leading craftsmanship so synonymous with Bentley, Mulliner has raised the bar further to create the Continental GT Mulliner Convertible; the pinnacle of roof-down automotive luxury.

Grand Black walnut veneer is standard, while a new extensive range of 88 different piano-finished wood veneers is available through Bentley Mulliner Personal Commissioning. Customers can therefore specify a contemporary, colourised veneer finish that can be matched to the interior or exterior of the car. Burr walnut veneer is hand sanded and polished to produce a perfectly smooth finish before painting to match the colour of the customer’s choice. Once dry, the veneer is polished to achieve a mirror-like finish. For the new Continental GT Mulliner Convertible, eye-catching chrome details are overlaid into the piano veneer, including a Convertible silhouette in the passenger fascia and a B-motif in the door waistrails.

The new Continental GT Mulliner Convertible has been created to appeal to those customers wanting an even greater focus on beautiful details. Taking pride of position between the cut-crystal inspired, precision-made headlamps, Bentley Mulliner introduces a bold new Double Diamond front grille, which is further complemented by bespoke Mulliner-branded side vents that continue the unique silver-on-black diamond theme.

The new Double Diamond design was inspired by Bentley’s exclusive Diamond-in-Diamond interior quilting design concept, which adorns all four seats, the door casings, rear quarters and now for the first time furnishes the tonneau cover. The Diamond-in-Diamond interior quilting was tailored to include contrast stitching in two complementary colours to accentuate the thread against the quilting. It takes almost 400,000 stitches to deliver this quilting across the cabin of the car, with each diamond containing exactly 712 individual stitches – each one precisely aligned to point to the centre of the diamond it creates. Developing the embroidery process to deliver this process alone took 18 months.

Furnishing the sleek and muscular profile of the Continental GT Mulliner Convertible, the all-new 22” 10-spoke painted & polished wheels have floating, self-levelling wheel badges that remain upright as the wheel rotates.

The ultimate handcrafted Continental GT Convertible interior offers eight custom-made three-color combinations. A new Mulliner-designed colour split defines the eight colour ways, including a third accent colour to the interior in the form of a distinctive design line. The hand-stitched hides are embellished with unique Mulliner-branded embroidery.

2018 has been a year of global awards for Bentley’s new Continental GT, which is positioned as one of the best Grand Tourers in the world. The model has won an impressive array of awards.

The Continental GT is designed, engineered and handcrafted in Great Britain and has received as many as 19 awards from a wide range of publications in countries including those in China, Germany, Russia and its home country, the UK.

Commenting on the impact the Continental GT has made, Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said that it is the model’s elegant understatement and its engineering excellence that made it eligible for so many awards. Experts around the world have agreed that Bentley has made the finest Grand Tourer. He concluded by expressing his delight that the model has received such a high level of recognition. With the addition of the new Continental GT Convertible to the range in 2019, Bentley will have the strongest and most technologically advanced portfolio of models in the luxury car segment.

New Continental GT – Winning With Judges

The third generation Continental GT made its public debut last year and with its combination of supercar performance and high levels of refinement and luxury, it has become a statement of Grand Touring excellence.
The foremost style experts in the world, GQ magazine, picked the Continental GT for the ‘Best Interior (And Possibly Exterior)’ award, saying that Bentley successfully met the challenge of locating the sweet spot where hi-tech intersected with fabulous luxury by creating a stunning environment, and thus the best interior.

BBC’s “Top Gear” magazine named the Continental GT as the ‘GT of the Year’, praising its depth of engineering, and calling it “simply one of the most complete GT cars on the planet”. Special praise was reserved for the ease with which the car negotiated tricky bits of the road.

In the first edition of the News UK Motor Awards, including the Times and Sun titles, the Continental GT was named as the ‘Luxury Car of the Year’. The judges said that “the cabin feels as sumptuously appointed as the Princess Grace Suite at the Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo” and that “unlike many sports cars, you’ll arrive feeling as relaxed as when the journey started”.
The Continental GT also won the ‘Best Interior’ and ‘Best Exterior Premium Brand’ awards in the prestigious German Design Awards, ‘Grand Tourer of the Year’ by Sohu Auto in China, and ‘Best Grand Tourer for travelling in Europe’ by Russian title, Prime Traveller.

Bentley has teamed up with Bang & Olufsen for breaking new ground when it comes to automotive audio. Bentley has integrated B&O’s pathbreaking BeoSonic interface as part of the new Continental GT.
BeoSonic comes with a simple but intuitive one-touch user interface that motorists can use to shape the sound in the car. They thus get to experience bespoke audio that is entirely according to their tastes.
Bang & Olufsen BeoSonic One-Touch Experience comes with haptic sound controls that can be adjusted through the touchscreen interface to provide motorists with four distinct audio spaces – Bright, Energetic, Warm & Relaxed. This interface is integrated into the multimedia system and has an eclipse design.

Consumers can choose between the four different spaces by moving a digital white marker so that they can choose the music that best suits their current mood. The color palette behind the eclipse reflects the selected sound mode. A pinching gesture can be used to adjust the surround intensity. The system can also be optimized for passengers in the front and rear seats by using additional settings.

Bentley worked closely with the Harman International audio engineering and design teams handling design of the audio systems for Bentley to further refine the Bang & Olufsen sound system for the Continental GT. The system comprises a powerful 1,500-watt BeoCore DSP amplifier and 16 active loudspeakers to produce sound of impressive quality.

Another notable feature of the sound system is the iconic design of the speaker grilles which are finished in aluminum with holes drilled in variable sizes and angles and shaped to a uniquely-designed Fibonacci hole pattern. In order to achieve the best audio transparency, the angled holes are placed as tightly as possible. Visually, this also contrasts with the glass-pearl blasted surface. When the system is turned on, the LED illumination of the holes provide a welcoming atmosphere. The Bang & Olufsen logo completes the unique speaker design and is debossed into the leather next to the grilles.

Other features that enhance the audio experience are the laminated acoustic glass windscreen and side windows in the Continental GT, which reduce the exterior noise ingress.

Ashley Blakemore, Head of Infotainment and Audio at Bentley, said: “The BeoSonic user interface allows you to change equalization based on your mood, which means fewer inputs are required to achieve their desired audio experience. When changing between sound spaces, you will instantly hear the difference: you can change from an exact and narrow sound to a much more open and surrounding listening experience.”
