Private transportation has gained considerable importance as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. In order to minimize contact with others, many people are choosing to travel in their own cars. The use of public transportation and carpools, in contrast, has declined significantly worldwide. These are some of the key findings of the recently published Continental Mobility Study 2020. Within the framework of the study, representative surveys on people’s mobility habits were conducted in Germany, France, the USA, Japan and China in cooperation with infas, the renowned social research institute.
Dr. Ariane Reinhart, Continental Executive Board member for Human Relations and Sustainability, says of the study results: “The results of the Continental Mobility Study show that there is a global need for personal mobility. During the coronavirus pandemic, this demand has increased even more.” Dr. Ariane Reinhart continues: “Against the backdrop of the pressing climate issue, sustainable and – first and foremost – carbon-neutral solutions for global transport are therefore all the more important. As a technology company with one of the most comprehensive sustainability roadmaps in the supplier industry, Continental is set to make key contributions in many areas related to personal transport. Our goal is carbon-neutral mobility – by 2050 at the latest.”
Clear trend toward personal transportation as a result of the pandemic In France and Germany, 80 percent of respondents reported having changed their daily mobility habits during the pandemic. At 81 percent, a similar shift in behavior can be observed in the USA. The greatest change has occurred in Asia: in Japan, 88 percent of people have changed their mobility habits, with this figure rising to 93 percent in China.

Although the amount of travel has been reduced significantly for many people during the crisis, a large number reported having used their cars more frequently. This is especially the case in China, where almost half of those surveyed indicated that they were traveling more often by car. Considering that more people in urban areas participated in the representative survey, this is especially striking. In densely populated Germany with a comparatively tightly meshed public transportation system, a quarter of those surveyed are using cars more often than before the outbreak of the pandemic. Even in France, where freedom of movement and thus mobility has been restricted particularly severely, 16 percent of the population have been using cars more regularly. Germany (23 percent), the USA (22 percent) and Japan (21 percent) show similar trends.
The coronavirus pandemic is leading to greater personal mobility and thus to a further increase in traffic density in the five countries surveyed. “Modern vehicles with predictive software on board are now an important part of the solution to people’s mobility needs. Cars that bring their occupants safely and efficiently to their destination. Continental stands for these intelligent solutions,” says Dr. Ariane Reinhart.
In addition to cars, bicycles have also received a further boost due to the coronavirus pandemic. At 34 percent, the increase in the use of bicycles is particularly high in China, followed by Germany at 21 percent. It is a different story for public transportation, meanwhile, with half of the people in Germany saying they use public transit less often than before, and more than half in China and Japan. It is notable that 56 percent of people in the USA and 48 percent of people in France have made no changes in their use of buses and trains. In China, Japan and Germany, only around one-third of respondents reported likewise.
The question is whether this trend will continue after the crisis. Some of the results of the Continental Mobility Study 2020 seem to indicate this: between 6 percent of respondents in Japan and Germany and 15 percent in the USA reported that they have bought a car or are considering buying one in the medium to long term in light of the pandemic. In China, where the proportion of car owners is still significantly lower, this sentiment was echoed by as many as 58 percent of respondents. It is also notable that, comparatively, Chinese citizens reported more frequent use of car-sharing or carpool schemes or reliance on rental cars during the pandemic.

Overall, cars are part of daily travel for most people in all of the surveyed countries. In the USA, Germany and France, more than half of those surveyed said they use a vehicle daily or almost daily and around one-third reported driving a car at least once a week. At 43 and 41 percent respectively, the total for China reaches a similarly high level, but with fewer daily or almost daily trips than in Western industrialized nations. Only around a third of Japanese people surveyed reported driving daily or at least once a week, with 13 percent of respondents there stating that they forgo driving completely.
Conclusion As a consequence of the global spread of the coronavirus, daily mobility habits have changed significantly worldwide. People are avoiding using public transportation such as buses, trains and carpools across the globe – in Asia more so than in Europe. This is benefiting private transportation. Private cars and bicycles are the preferred modes of transportation.
The Continental Mobility Study Since 2011, the technology company Continental has carried out the Continental Mobility Study on various key topics at regular intervals. The Continental Mobility Study 2020 is the sixth edition of the study, which asks people in Germany, France, the USA, China and Japan about various aspects of mobility. One of the focus areas of the current study is electric mobility. In the first stage in September 2020, a representative sample of the population was surveyed in five countries on three continents.
In addition to the expectations and attitudes regarding electric vehicles, the survey also dealt with changes in mobility against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Measures to stop the spread of the virus temporarily reduced mobility to a great extent in all of the surveyed countries as part of strict lockdowns imposed on their populations. At the same time, the behavior of many people changed, even after the measures were relaxed and mobility could largely return to normal. The findings of the survey reveal specific changes in behavior, attitudes and expectations.
The Mobility Study 2020 is a joint effort between Continental and the market and social research institute infas, which has been supporting the Mobility Study since 2011.

Although the coronavirus has thrown many plans into disarray, Automechanika Shanghai continues to be a constant on the trade fair calendar. The event is taking place as scheduled from 2 to 5 December – with German exhibitors on site. A total of 16 German companies are presenting their products and services at the largest automotive aftermarket trade fair in China. The exhibitors are BASF Co., Elring Klinger, ERC Additiv, GS-Autoteile, Blitz Oil, Liqui Moly, Mapco Autotechnik, MASTER Sport-Automobiltechnik, Phototherm Dr. Petry, ROWE Mineralölwerk, Schäferbarthold, SEG Automotive, Shanghai GungHo International Trading Co. / Autotestgeräte Leitenberger, Shanghai Pingo Industrial, Valiant Auto Parts Co. and Otto Zimmermann.
In spite of the coronavirus crisis, German exhibitors are headed to Automechanika Shanghai – Berndt Kautter, Managing Director of Phototherm Dr. Petry GmbH, explains why: “Automechanika Shanghai offers us an opportunity to maintain contact with our customers on location while also reaching potential new customers. I believe that maintaining personal contact is particularly important the way things are today.” Dipl.-Ing. Axel Peters, Sales Manager Export at Otto Zimmermann GmbH, agreed: “It goes without saying that the uncertainties surrounding travel regulations and protecting the health of our employees have long been of concern for our company. Even so, we decided to exhibit at the event because in difficult times like these, direct contact with our customers is more important than ever. That is why we are putting so much emphasis this year on ensuring that our customers can speak to us and on raising the profile of our brand. Besides, the coronavirus crisis has done nothing to change the fact that there is always a demand for spare parts.”
This opinion is shared by other German exhibitors as well – after all, the trade fair offers access to a very lucrative market. Dipl.-Ing. Axel Peters: “Automechanika Shanghai is an important channel for establishing our brand in the Chinese and international market. We have had many promising talks at Automechanika Shanghai over the years that have led to new business relationships, and that is exactly what we are hoping to achieve again this year. We believe that the Chinese market offers excellent potential for expansion, and we also want to continue building our brand in neighbouring markets.”

ROWE Mineralölwerk is pursuing similar strategic goals, and they are also utilising the trade fair to publicise their new brand identity. Tobias Hein, Corporate Communications Manager for ROWE Marketing GmbH, had this to say: “Following a difficult year for the global economy, we are also looking to use our first international trade fair presentation to improve our strategic position, strengthen our partnerships and business ties in China, and expand our business with our strong customers. This will also be the first time that ROWE’s new brand identity, which was introduced as part of a comprehensive relaunch in March 2020, is presented internationally at an exhibition stand.”
Most of the German companies at the trade fair are presenting their products and services as part of the German Pavilion. The companies are taking advantage of the support provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), not to mention professional organisation and an attractive pavilion. ‘Made in Germany’ is very popular in China. Berndt Kautter: “I believe that participating in the German Pavilion is an excellent idea, because the Chinese prize German quality.”
This will be the first time that the trade fair is held as a hybrid event, with a physical fair at the National Exhibition and Convention Center Shanghai hosting approx. 3,900 exhibitors, and a digital platform set up to accommodate all those participants who are unable to travel to China. Thanks to the new tool ‘AMS Live’, exhibitors will be able to meet virtually with visitors from around the globe throughout Automechanika Shanghai, giving them the chance to network and share ideas using various digital services, including live chats, video calls and live streams.

From now on, MAHLE will focus even more strongly on its strategic future priorities. The Stuttgart-based technology group is therefore maintaining its investments in research and development at a high level despite the crisis. MAHLE will further strengthen its research and development activities by expanding its global competence centers, including those in Germany and China. The key development areas are battery systems and hydrogen applications—for which MAHLE already supplies numerous innovations. MAHLE has recently begun to install hydrogen testing infrastructure at its headquarters in Stuttgart. MAHLE CEO Jörg Stratmann has weighed in to the topical debate on how to achieve the climate targets, advocating an approach that is open to all technologies: “We must tackle the climate targets using effective technologies and all the solutions currently available to us.”

“Viewed from an international perspective, there will not be one single powertrain of the future. That’s why MAHLE is continuing to follow its dual strategy: electrification, development of the fuel cell, and the use of hydrogen and alternative fuels in an intelligently electrified combustion engine,” said Dr. Jörg Stratmann, Chairman of the MAHLE Management Board and CEO at a press conference in Stuttgart on Friday. “At the moment, the change in powertrain technologies is driven primarily by political objectives. The current one-dimensional debate focused on a single drive is not productive. We want a dialog that has a basis in technology.”

As part of the expansion of its global R&D infrastructure, the group has recently set up a new competence center for mechatronics in Kornwestheim, near Stuttgart. In the future, all international activities in this field will be coordinated from this location. In Fellbach, also near Stuttgart, a new, ultramodern test bench for electric drives has been commissioned, which is one of very few of its kind in Germany. An e-mobility development center in Suzhou/China is scheduled for completion in December. MAHLE will pool its expertise in mechatronics, thermal management, and fluid management at the site and work on solutions specifically for the Chinese market.

MAHLE sees the use of hydrogen as key when it comes to shaping carbon-neutral mobility—both in fuel cell technology and in the combustion engine. Through policy initiatives and a highly diverse range of collaboration agreements in the industrial sector, the group is working hard to accelerate the establishment of these technologies. At MAHLE, research and development activities relating to hydrogen are pooled in a project house.

At the press conference, MAHLE’s Head of Corporate Research and Advanced Engineering, Dr. Martin Berger, presented a current project involving a type IV hydrogen tank. The design consists of a liner made of plastic and an outer casing made of carbon fiber. MAHLE is working on the development of a new production process for this tank that will increase its hydrogen storage density and make it cheaper at the same time. The group is also installing hydrogen infrastructure to test fuel cells and hydrogen-powered combustion engines.

To accelerate the market penetration of battery electric mobility, MAHLE is working intently on the subject of battery cooling. To allow for fast charging, the temperature in the battery cell needs to be evenly distributed and must not rise too high. On this point, Martin Berger gave an insight into another of MAHLE’s new developments—by harnessing the concept of immersion cooling, charging times can be reduced and batteries made smaller. He commented that: “Immersion cooling paves the way for a whole new generation of battery systems. With this technology, electric vehicles will be cheaper, lighter, and more resource-efficient.”

“Hyundai Motors reported a decline of 52% year-on-year in Q2 2020 operating profit due to low demand for new vehicles in the overseas market. The company’s operating profit fell to US$492m (590 billion Won) and Q2 sales declined by 19% to US$ 18.3bn (21.86 trillion Won).

“As per the company’s data, Hyundai reported a year-on-year decline of 22.7% in its global vehicle sales in June 2020 and the sales volume stood at 291,854 units. The decline in sales is majorly accredited to slowdown in the economic activities due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic globally and the resultant decline in sales in key overseas market for Hyundai which includes Europe, US, India and China.

“Hyundai Motor India reported 49% year-on-year decline in June 2020 sales. Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., Ltd. reported 20% year-on-year decline in China domestic sales in June 2020. Hyundai US and Europe retail sales declined by 22% and 35% year-on-year respectively in June 2020.

“The vehicle exports from South Korea are also a cause of concern for Hyundai.  The exports were 30.4% low year-on-year in June 2020 as per the company data. Decline in exports was primarily accredited to the demand slump in the US, Canada and the Middle East & Africa region, which are key export markets for the company.

“While overseas sales declined, domestic sales for Hyundai remained strong. After declining by 21% and 26% in January and February, the new vehicle sales improved for the manufacturer in South Korea. The domestic sales were up 37.2% in June 2020 compared to previous year.

It is evident that the impact of COVID-19 on the auto sector may not fade away soon and the demand for new vehicles is likely to remain lower compared to pre-COVID levels in most markets. A combination of risk management efforts, new vehicle launches and digitization of vehicle sales would help in minimizing the impact of COVID-19 on Hyundai.

Volvo Cars is teaming up with leading Chinese telecom provider China Unicom for development and use of 5G next generation mobile network technology for communication between cars and infrastructure in China.

The two companies have agreed to collaborate on researching, developing and testing automotive applications of 5G and emerging vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology.

5G, the fifth generation of mobile network technology, is a lot faster, has a higher data capacity and offers lower response times when compared to its predecessor, 4G. Using 5 G facilitates the development of more applications for vehicles as more data can be transferred to and from cars at a faster rate and with less latency.

Volvo Cars and China Unicom will explore diverse applications of 5G technology in the communication between cars and infrastructure in China. They will also work on identifying scope for improvements in areas like sustainability, customer convenience, safety and autonomous driving.

One example is when information regarding upcoming traffic issues like road works, congestion or accidents can be transmitted to a vehicle’s systems so that pre-emptive action like slowing down or switching to a different route can be taken. This can enhance traffic safety for people inside the car, while avoiding start-and-stop traffic and improving efficient energy use.

Another example is the use of 5G to improve parking by helping vehicles to find parking spots more easily with the help of traffic cameras. Cars may also communicate with traffic lights in order to establish an optimal speed and create a so-called ‘green wave’, and share data with each other to optimize safe exits and entries from and onto highways.

”Volvo has been a leader in realising the potential of connecting our cars to enable new features and services such as detecting and sharing locations of slippery roads between vehicles,” said Henrik Green, chief technology officer at Volvo Cars. “With 5G, the network performance is improving to allow for many more real-time critical services that can help the driver be safer and get a smoother and more enjoyable ride. We look forward to collaborating with China Unicom on developing those services for the Chinese market.”

Mr. Liang Baojun, vice president of China Unicom Group, said that as a pioneer of innovation in the 5G area, China Unicom is committed to the creation of new information infrastructure and solutions in the area of intelligent Internet connection with the best experience to the users. He added that 5G can be used for enabling the development of automatic driving, improving safety and providing road users with a new experience by building a collaborative service system of ’people, vehicles, roadway, network and cloud.

China is currently rolling out 5G across major cities in the nation with the support of telecom providers like China Unicom and others. Like most regions, China is also widely expected to implement its own regional standards for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies.

Through this collaboration with China Unicom, Volvo Cars will be suitably prepared for local requirements and create a strong presence in V2X in its biggest market. Volvo Cars plans to introduce 5G connectivity as part of the next generation of Volvos, based on the next generation SPA2 modular vehicle architecture.

Brembo has just opened a new hub for production and supply of aluminum brake calipers in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China. The company has invested 100 million euros in the new hub which integrates a foundry with production lines and is adjacent to the plant that the company had set up in 2012 for manufacturing brake discs. The Brembo Group is already supplying aluminum calipers and knuckles to factories of European, Asian and American companies operating in China.

Brembo’s Chairman and President Alberto Bombassei was on hand at the hub’s inauguration to welcome the eminent Italian and Chinese dignitaries who were present at the ceremony. Brembo has maintained a presence in the Chinese market for nearly two decades and had initially forayed into the market by setting up a joint venture concern in 2001. Currently, the company operates in China through four different companies namely, Brembo (Nanjing) Brake Systems Co. Ltd., Qingdao Brembo Trading Co. Ltd., Brembo Huilian (Langfang) Brake System Co. Ltd and Brembo (Nanjing) Automotive Components Co. Ltd.

The new production hub extends over an area that covers almost 40,000 square meters and it will deal with all of the production stages in the value chain, right from delivery of raw material to shipping the finished product. Thus, it will play an important role in ensuring better service for the factories belonging to Brembo customers in Europe, Asia and America that have operations in Asia.

The plant which is close to the hub contributes about 100 million euros on an annual basis to the Group’s turnover and has a workforce of about 450 people. The facility has as many as 67 production lines which make components ranging from calipers to knuckles and a foundry. It has a production capacity of over 2 million pieces per year and uses the most advanced technologies that are available currently.

“It is with great pride that I inaugurate this new production hub in China on the occasion of the first official visit of the Chinese authorities who are here with us today,” said Alberto Bombassei, President of Brembo.

Bombassei concluded by saying that the inauguration of the hub was an event that highlighted the innovative process and product technologies Brembo uses at the production site on behalf of its customers having operations in China. It also attested to Brembo’s presence in a key market that is highly strategic in terms of the company’s growth and development.

The new plant was built according to the most progressive criteria to guarantee quality, efficiency and environmental protection with the goals of minimizing waste and maximizing energy recovery by applying the strictest regulations imposed by the Carbon Disclosure Project protocol.

Bridgestone Corporation has announced that the company has won a favorable ruling from the Beijing Intellectual Property Court in the case it filed for infringement of its design rights against leading Chinese tire manufacturer Shengtai Group.

Bridgestone had filed the case with the Beijing Intellectual Property Court back in September 2015. According to the lawsuit, Bridgestone claimed that the tire manufacturing and sales activities conducted by Shengtai Group used a truck tire tread pattern that was patented by Bridgestone for the Firestone ST3000 truck tire tread. Hence, the activities of the Shengtai Group violated Bridgestone’s design rights.

In January 2019, the Beijing Intellectual Property Court upheld Bridgestone’s claim and ordered the Shengtai Group to pay Bridgestone damages to the tune of 10 million Chinese yuan (which is approximately 160 million Japanese yen) and now the winning lawsuit has been finalized.

Bridgestone said that it takes any unauthorized use or infringement of its patents, design rights, trademarks, or any other intellectual property seriously as it strives to provide consumers with safe and reliable products. As part of this drive, it is necessary to protect consumers against the proliferation of substandard and potentially unsafe counterfeit tires and such lawsuits are meant to deter those who use Bridgestone’s patented designs or technologies in an unauthorized manner to make lookalike products which could be potentially unsafe or of low quality and thus damage Bridgestone’s hard-earned brand value.

Michelin has commenced online sale of tires in China in collaboration with the largest retailer in China, JD.com. JD.com has launched a Michelin flagship store on its platform. As an extension of the partnership between the two companies, Michelin and JD.com will integrate their offline automotive service networks. Customers who buy Michelin tires online through JD.com will be given priority at service networks like TyrePlus for fitment.

Michelin had begun its partnership with JD.com back in 2016. JD.com has partnerships with other tire manufacturers like Continental and Goodyear. The launch of the Michelin tire platform on JD.com marks the first time that Michelin has authorized an online platform to directly sell its tires to customers in China.

JD.com said that it has enjoyed “triple-digit growth” in tire sales 2018 and expects the reinforcement of its relationship with Michelin to further boost the sale of tires. Through this collaboration, Michelin will now gain access to over 300 million customers in the Chinese market.

The two companies are planning to carry out a “seamless integration” of Michelin’s TyrePlus service network with JD.com’s offline automotive initiative, JD Auto Service and plan to set a new benchmark of convenience for customers thorough this integration. This step is being taken as part of JD’s ‘Boundaryless Retail’ strategy, which means that customers should have the option of buying whatever they like at any time they like wherever they like through online or offline means.
JD.com said that the collaboration will mean that customers would be able to purchase authentic products while also adding that it has an unmatched logistics and warehousing network across China which will ensure that purchased tires are delivered to offline service centers for installation with the speed and efficiency that JD.com is famous for.

“JD.com understands that car owners require seamless integration of online purchasing and offline installation when they are choosing new tyres,” said Roc Liu, vice-president of Michelin China Investment Co., LTD. “With this e-commerce giant as our partner, we’re confident that this partnership will improve the entire tire purchasing experience.”

Lijun Xin, president of JD Life and Services, added that Michelin is known all over the world for making high quality tires which he felt sure would generate high demand from JD.com users. He felt that with the backing of JD.com’s premium e-commerce platform and its capabilities in boundaryless retail, which would also include the company’s offline auto parts franchise, the expansion of the partnership between the two companies would help consumers across China to connect better with the Michelin brand of tires and thus significantly improve the process of buying and installing tires.
JD.com launched its network of JD Auto Services outlets in September 2018, and has expanded both its online and offline portfolio for car owners in China.
