The fiercely-fought 2021 Dakar, which took place in Saudi Arabia from January 3 to January 15 in compliance with strict sanitary measures necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic, saw Stéphane Peterhansel – aka Monsieur Dakar – take the top prize at the wheel of his JCW Team-tended two-wheel drive, diesel-powered X-Raid Mini buggy. The Frenchman’s blend of speed, consistency and control proved decisive over the particularly fast, rough terrain visited by this year’s 12-stage, 4,500-kilometre marathon which put the crews, their cars and their tires to a truly punishing test.

“The BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KDR2+ used for the 2021 Dakar packs the very best rally tire technology and is the result of an ongoing development process founded on feedback collected on events,” said Sandrine Combeaux (Manager, BFGoodrich Europe).

“The 2021 Dakar, the second to be held in the Middle East, featured extremely fast stages that were rougher than those encountered in South America. As the data from this year’s highly exacting event indicates, the big-wheeled buggies had the edge in terms of structural strength, whereas the 4×4 vehicles – which were equipped with smaller wheels – were more prone to issues.

“In addition to the need for precise navigational skills, and in keeping with the tradition of African-style rallies, driving style and careful mechanical sympathy stood out as important keys to success, as illustrated by Stéphane Peterhansel’s winning performance.”

BFGoodrich experts were on-hand to support its partners from start to finish and assist them with their tire, set-up and tire pressure choices. Over the 12 legs, the BFGoodrich® Service Center fitted and removed some 3,800 tires.

Events like the Dakar and North American-style ‘bajas’ have contributed significantly to the outstanding ability of BFGoodrich’s all-terrain tires and to the unique expertise the brand has built up in the course of its 150 year history. It uses motorsport as a life-size laboratory to put its tires through their paces in the most extreme conditions imaginable with the aim of gaining the invaluable knowhow that enables the performance of its competition tires to be carried over to commercially-available BFGoodrich® tires for four-wheel drive vehicles.

The 2021 Dakar was also marked by the performance and resilience of the recently-launched BFGoodrich Mud Terrain KM3 SSV/UTV. The event’s Light Vehicle category (UTV/SSV) saw BFGoodrich runner Cristina Gutierrez from Spain post the class’s fastest time on the first day, thereby becoming the first lady competitor to claim a Dakar stage since 2005. Meanwhile, 18-year old Seth Quintero – who, like Cristina Gutierrez, was defending the colors of Red Bull Junior Team OT3 – was the youngest competitor ever to contest the Dakar.

BFGoodrich Tyres will be resuming its role as the event’s official tire for the 2017 edition of the Dakar Rally after withdrawing from the event in 2012. The 2017 Dakar Rally will be starting in Asunción, Paraguay in January and as part of its sponsorship deal, BFGoodrich tyres will be supplying tires to many of the participants and willalso be setting up the BFGoodrich Dakar Service Center, which will be available 24/7 to offer technical expertise to the competitors. The rally will take place over two weeks and competitors will face tough terrain and unpredictable  weather over more than 5,000 miles across three countries as they race to the finish line in what is arguably one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

BF Goodrich is a brand that has considerable expertise when it comes to the manufacture of rugged tires. The brand created its first radial all-terrain tire in 1976 and has been responsible for many off-road racing victories around the globe. As part of its deal with the Dakar Rally, BF Goodrich will equip approximately 300 vehicles at Dakar with race tires that have been customized to tackle all kinds of rugged terrain.

Speaking about the company’s support for the event, Michelin and BFGoodrich motorsport director, Pascal Couasnon said that BFGoodrich has a proud racing heritage when it comes to long-range races and is excited to continue its global involvement in racing in the dirt with the brand’s official return to the Dakar Rally. Cross-country rally racing is a challenging event for all competitors and the Dakar Rally involves racing across some of the most complex terrains on the planet. He also added that BF Goodrich will continue to use all the technical information it learns during races in racing laboratories around the world to develop new technology and constantly improve its products

The BFGoodrich tires used for the 2017 Dakar Rally will include tires that have already been tested globally like:

  • All-Terrain KDR2, which was designed to be lighter and has a new tread pattern. It has been tuned to provide better handling for lighter vehicles, like those of the Peugeot and Toyota Gazoo Racing team in Dakar;
  • All-Terrain KDR is similar to the KDR2, and delivers better braking stability and driving comfort along with all-terrain grip. It has been modified to withstand the extra demands on the sidewall from four-wheel-drive vehicles like those from the Toyota/Overdrive, Mini X-Raid and Mini ALL4 teams;
  • Baja T/A KR2, which has dominated the Baja desert races, and will be fitted to two-wheel-drive buggies at Dakar. This tire’s tread is designed to deliver maximum traction on soft ground, protect against sidewall damage and deliver balanced braking and cornering performance.

BFGoodrich said that the technology it has used in these tires is transferred to the brand’s tires for consumers which will have compounds and casings which are similar to the competition tires. One example of this is the All-Terrain T/A KO2, which was designed to offer motorists durability and extreme traction. In addition to using the rally as a platform for developing new innovations, BFGoodrich is also committed to winning, with the brand claiming its first class victory in the Paris Dakar in 1993, which was followed by a dozen overall Dakar victories, including 10 consecutive  wins from 2002 to 2012.
