Varroc Lighting Systems has announced that it has entered into a joint venture agreement with ELBA, a privately owned Romanian lighting and electronics company.

The joint venture company will deal with the manufacturing of electronics and is also expected to support the expansion of Varroc Lighting in Europe, given the increasing electronic content of lighting products. Though the terms of the partnership were not divulged, the two companies revealed that the new joint venture will be located in Timisoara, Romania.

Commenting on the joint venture, Varroc Lighting Systems President and CEO Stephane Vedie said that Varroc already designs and develops all of its own electronics hardware and software. With input from Elba, there will vertical integration of manufacturing which is expected to support the company’s profitable growth. ELBA is recognized as one of the key players in the lighting market in Europe, and it is expected that the partnership will be highly successful.

Bogdan Cocian, CEO of ELBA said that the global lighting market is undergoing major changes, and electronics integration is necessary to address the actual and future needs of the final customer.

Cocian added, “We are eager to start this new JV, in partnership with Varroc, to vertically integrate and optimize our supply of electronic components.”

The new joint venture with ELBA is the second such initiative that Varroc Lighting has undertaken recently. In July, the company has acquired Saba Automotive, a Turkish manufacturer of small lighting and electronics products.

Magna Electronics has formed a joint venture with startup Rohinni to make ultra-thin micro LED lighting solutions that are needed for distinctive, high-performance lighting in vehicles of the future. These lights will be lighter, brighter and more energy-efficient than other lighting technologies, including OLED.

The joint venture company will be known as Magna Rohinni Automotive, and will effectively leverage Magna’s world-class electronics manufacturing expertise with Rohinni’s expertise in lighting technology for mobility industries. The joint venture will be based in Holly, Michigan.

Rohinni makes thin-film micro and mini LEDs which can be adapted for use in almost any application, and will provide automotive manufacturers and suppliers with new possibilities for design and product differentiation. Rohinni has also developed technology that makes it possible to place micro LEDs onto a substrate surface with adequate speed and accuracy to support high-volume production. Conventional LED manufacturing techniques are very time consuming, but thanks to Rohinni’s expertise in this area, the new joint venture will be able to bring micro and mini LED-based products to market more quickly and cost-effectively.

Rohinni CEO Matthew Gerber said that his team was very excited about partnering with Magna for the joint venture as Magna is a global brand with many years of automotive market and applications experience.

As part of the deal, Magna has made a minority equity investment in Rohinni based on the promising application of their leading micro and mini LED technology in a range of other industries, applications and products.
“This joint venture with Rohinni brings thin, flexible lighting technology that mobility has not seen before,” said Magna CTO Swamy Kotagiri. “Current automakers, new mobility companies, other lighting suppliers, and Magna’s own product groups all stand to benefit from this collaboration.”

SCHOTT has won the prestigious Red Dot Design award in the Materials category for a new, aesthetic lighting concept with LuminaLine. The SCHOTT LuminaLine meets all the norms regarding design quality and material resistance for future requirements in automotive lighting.
“LuminaLine” has already earned two prestigious awards though it has hardly been in the market for three months. The concept had also won the German Innovation Award 2018.

For winning the renowned Red Dot Design award, SCHOTT LuminaLine faced stiff competition from 5,600 entries received from 55 countries. The jury for the awards comprised 40 internationally recognized design experts. LuminaLine also was one of the three finalists for Red Dot: Luminary, the highest award presented in the Red Dot Design Award for design concepts.

According to Stephan Schabacker, Director of Sales Automotive at SCHOTT Lighting and Imaging, LuminaLine is a particularly strong concept as it can be used in many ways, both as a component for really harsh elements and as a versatile design element. It is easy to recycle as a glass component and has its own aesthetics both in the illuminated and non-illuminated state.

Technically, LuminaLine is based on a glass composite whose luminance is bundled by a fiber optic, thus creating an interplay of light and transparency that offers plenty of scope for new designs. From a functional perspective, LuminaLine can also be used for medical and industrial applications as it can create concentrated homogeneous light. However, the lighting technology is strengthened by the thermally toughened clad glass that surrounds the soul. The clad exhibits high resistance to physical and chemical loads and can tolerate UV radiation and temperatures up to 400°C.

Automotive design made of glass: anything but fragile

This durability makes it possible to use this lighting system even in the smallest spaces and in the ost diverse environments. Thus LuminaLine is ideal for vehicle exterior lighting, and for facilitating aesthetic and reliable functional and contour lighting, as in the case of an illuminated entry aid or for accentuating exterior doors.

With automation and electrification changing vehicle design and increasing the scope for lighting, Schbacker explained that lighting design has become a central theme.

In the past, the key requirements when it came to vehicle lighting were quality and reliability, but in the future, lighting should also be customizable and sustainable.
“SCHOTT has been a reliable technology and development partner of leading car makers for more than 25 years. This expertise allows us to proactively align our product development to the automotive market’s qualification tests and design requirements,” Schabacker added.

SCHOTT LuminaLine can also turn traffic signal lighting into a design element.

Magna International has expanded into the lighting business with the Euro 230 million acquisition of OLSA S.p.A. This will expand Magna’s expertise in the design, engineering and manufacture of lighting products like headlamps and tail lamps. The deal has been finalized pending formal approval from regulatory authorities and it is expected that the deal will go through before the end of 2018.

OLSA is based in Turin, Italy and specializes in the production of lighting products for automotive manufacturers. The company has a workforce of 2,500 employees and has manufacturing facilities spread across different parts of the world like Brazil, China, Mexico, Italy and Poland. OLSA’s customers include renowned companies like FCA, the BMW Group and the Volkswagen Group.

Commenting on the deal, John O’Hara, President of Magna Lighting said that as an outcome of the deal, Magna will acquire expertise in lighting technology that will help the company to expand its range of distinctive, feature-rich lighting products. He said that Magna sees lighting as an area with immense scope for growth thanks to increasing levels of electronics integration and the desire of automotive manufacturers to differentiate their models through styling.

With the acquisition of OLSA, Magna will have a total of 11 lighting manufacturing facilities and two engineering centers globally.

OPTIS, a software company that specializes in the scientific simulation of light has unveiled a new software called SPEOS 2018. SPEOS 2018can provide light simulation which is based on the actual physical laws of optics and comes with new features optimized for the automotive industry, like headlight simulation and the simulation of internal materials. The software can be used to create a virtual environment for testing lighting components before they are manufactured as a final product.

Jacques Delacour, Founder, and CEO of OPTIS said that OPTIS’s technology is based on the concept of simulating light in the manner that the human eye would perceive it. In the automotive industry, it is important to accurately create and test headlight beams, so that they are as efficient as possible.

Companies which use SPEOS along with OPTIS’s simulation and virtual reality (VR) software products, do not need physical prototypes to test their products, and this can significantly cut R&D costs and expedite the time-to-market. Designers will now have the flexibility to create a virtual prototype of a system and test as many different design configurations using CAD software as they like.

Modern automotive lighting systems are highly complex and include backlit displays, sensors, tracking systems, image projections, head-up displays, and augmented reality glasses. This technology can be used by designers to check the performance of a lighting product before it is produced.

For example, designers can use SPEOS to model a vehicle’s dashboard, and see the way sunlight reflects of fits surface virtually. This information could be used to reduce areas that could create glare and thus distract drivers.

“For designers, engineers, OEMs, suppliers and beyond, we created SPEOS 2018 to make all levels of the process easier, more efficient and more easily communicated. SPEOS 2018 not only speeds time-to-market by eliminating the need for physical prototypes, but also by reducing friction in communication,” added Delacour.

Many leading automakers including Audi, Ford, Honda and Porsche have used lighting components that were designed using OPTIS technology.

Hella used the ongoing North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit to showcase its latest technology that will enable automated driving, and facilitate the design of more customized vehicles. Using the tagline “Experience Tomorrow”, Hella used its AutoMobili-D demo vehicle and booth at the Cobo Center in Detroit to present its multifunctional SHAKE (Structural Health and Knock Emission) sensor and innovations in car body lighting design.

Steve Lietaert, President of HELLA Corporate Center USA said that Hella is actively working on development of solutions that can be used to help OEMs manufacture vehicles which offer advanced safety features, superior performance, and offer more leeway for customization.

Lietaert said, “Individualization is one of the top trends we are focusing on to address the technologies needed for future autonomous mobility. Our SHAKE sensor, which goes into serial production this year and offers numerous safety and comfort functions, is an example of one of these technologies.”
The SHAKE sensor builds on the expertise that Hella already has when it comes to camera and radar systems and enhances the ability of vehicles to “see” the environment around them. Now, vehicles can use the SHAKE sensor to “feel” their surroundings as well and this offers immense potential when it comes to autonomous cars. The SHAKE sensor was upgraded to recognize structure-borne sound waves that are generated by contact or knocks on the vehicle body through a piezoelectric foil. The sensor can be used to analyze these sounds so that just by using the SHAKE sensor a smany as three detection functions can be performed.

The SHAKE technology’s three optional functions are:
• Intelligent Damage Detection: This function can be used to detect the extent, time and place of any damage to the vehicle, including scratches, dents and paint damage. This application then records the details of the damage to make things easier for both the owners and mobility companies, who might use autonomous vehicles in car-sharing applications.
• Adaptive Impact Detection: involves the use of two sensors which are located on the front and rear of vehicles, to forestall collisions by detecting the slightest touches of cars or pedestrians to the vehicle’s bumpers at speeds up to approximately 12 mph. These sensors also have the capability to trigger a sensor in order to perform an emergency stop if there is a collision with any obstacles during parking.
• Smart Touch Detection: Drivers can use this technology to increase safety and convenience features with smart touch detection. All they need to do to control certain functions is one touch of their hand.

In addition to sensors, lighting solutions have become increasingly important when it comes the design and safety of autonomous vehicles. Hella has developed new components for exterior lighting like rear combination lamps, headlamps and daytime running lights. The company has also come up with additional performance and styling options for OEMs. On the demonstration vehicle that was used at the Detroit show, visitors to the show could see a wide range of lighting technologies and see how lights could project graphics ground, among other functions.

Hella’s demo vehicle is located in AutoMobili-D’s atrium so that the visitors to the show can experience the SHAKE sensor, new lighting innovations and other advanced lighting and electronic solutions in action.

Osram and Continental have announced that they intend to set up a joint venture that will use Osram’s expertise in innovative lighting technology and Continental’s leadership in the field of electronics and software to develop, manufacture and market intelligent lighting solutions for the automotive industry. The global joint venture will be named Osram Continental GmbH and will work out of its registered office in Munich. Both companies will have a 50 percent stake in the joint venture. Long range plans include having a presence in 17 locations across the globe, a workforce of 1500 employees and annual sales amounting to mid-triple-digit-million-euros. Dirk Linzmeier (CEO) from Osram and Harald Renner (CFO) from Continental have been designated as managing directors from the respective companies. The joint venture is slated to start in 2018 with the conclusion of the deal being subject to final agreement on the binding contracts and antitrust approvals.

Osram will transfer its automotive Solid State Lighting (SSL) module business over to the joint venture, while Continental will contribute its light control business which currently belongs to its Body & Security business unit. Thus Osram Continental will be able to combine semiconductor-based lighting modules, advanced electronics, optics and software expertise with access to sensor technology and innovative light sources. The new company will be able to offer customers a broad range of end-to-end, innovative lighting solutions meant specifically for headlight and tail light applications. The intention is for both companies to use the skill in their respective domains to design perfectly coordinated and innovative products and solutions, and commercialize them more quickly. The joint venture will operate on the market as a standalone company.

Commenting on the deal, Stefan Kampmann, CTO of the Osram Licht AG said that the joint venture is a sign that Osram is focusing its efforts consistently on digitalization. He added that Continental’s expertise in software and electronics perfectly complements Osram’s technology leadership in automotive lighting. The end result will be a company that focuses on digital automotive lighting.
Helmut Matschi, member of the Continental Executive Board said that the pace of innovation in the automotive industry lighting segment is rapid, and software is playing an increasingly important role.
He added, “While conventional lighting expertise remains important to our customers, the addition of electronics to enable new light functions is taking on increased significance. The joint venture will systematically combine these two areas and raise them to a new level.”

The automotive industry lighting market is undergoing significant changes from a technological perspective, with the market is moving toward semiconductor-based lighting solutions. Software and electronics have become increasingly important with the advent of increasingly intelligent light functions in vehicles as well as new light-based design and application options. Market studies indicate that by as early as 2025 more than half of new cars worldwide could be fitted with semiconductor-based lighting solutions.
Andreas Wolf, head of Continental´s Body & Security business unit said that intelligent lighting solutions will give automotive manufacturers greater leeway when it comes to design, and help them to cut development costs. Osram Continental joint venture will have a global presence that will allow it to work closely with its customers to develop solutions that will cater to their needs.

Osram has debuted the Oslon Black Flat S series, which the company says is the world’s first surface mountable LEDs comprising up to five individually controllable chips. The package also comes with a contrast ratio that makes them suitable for use in ADB (Adaptive Driving Beam) headlights. As the individual light segments can be switched on and off, it is possible to mask out oncoming traffic and traffic further ahead on the road thus making driving safer and more comfortable.

The high-power LEDs also have improved thermal properties which make them suitable for use as a viable entry-level ADB solution even for vehicles in the compact category. The 3-chip version in the Oslon Black Flat S series has been available in the market from October 2016, and the variants with four and five chips will be available from January 2017.

The powerful chips used in the Osram Black Flat S series use state-of-the-art technologies. It is the first time that the light-emitting surface does not need a recess for contact with the bond wire, thus making it easier to adapt the optics as it emits highly uniform light across its square format. The chips can be controlled individually and offer very high contrast between neighboring chips which is 100% verifiable. Drivers benefit from the optimum distribution of light on the road at all times.

Speaking about the innovative technology, “Thomas Christl, Product Manager at Osram Opto Semiconductors said that the Oslon Black Flat S series makes it possible for users of even entry-level and compact models to enjoy the benefits of adaptive matrix lightso that they are safer and more comfortable on the roads.

Oslon Black Flat S makes it possible for motorists to enjoy a glare-free high beam as well as  other adaptive LED front lighting functions like cornering light and city light even without using any additional mechanical elements. In the entry level segment, the only ADB solutions that was available was the Osram Ostar Headlamp Pro which had individually controllable chips. The Oslon Black Flat S series will now be a welcome addition.

Other distinctive benefits offered by the chips are that they are surface mountable and are compatible with standard processes. In contrast to the Oslon Black Flat, the Oslon Black Flat S LEDs have an optimized and symmetrical contact surface design which further optimize heat removal and cycle stability. This further reduces system costs as it provides excellent thermal management and standard processing. The new multichip LEDs will make their appearance for the first time at the electronica trade fair which will be held in Munich from November 8 to 11.

Leonhard Kurz is one of the most renowned companies in the world in the field of automotive coatings and design. The recently participated in K 2016, one of the leading global trade fairs related to plastics and rubber, with a wide array of lighting design solutions for the automotive sector.

The ambient lighting in a vehicle can set the mood for the journey. The vehicle’s interiors whether it has wooden veneers or mood lighting can have a significant impact on the psychological well being and status of the occupants. There is an increasing trend to customize the interiors based on personal preferences and this was reflected in the designs that Leonhard Kurz presented at K 2016.

Kurz’s innovative lighting solutions and design solutions include elements like cool chrome and elegant piano effect with black and white elements and mood lighting. Customization of the interior space in a vehicle can help motorists to retreat to a world of their own and sophisticated ambient lighting can play a key role in this. Symbol illumination also needs to fulfill these stringent requirements and be accommodated within the interior lighting design, whilst ensuring that drivers can quickly take in the required information.

Full-surface and partial backlighting
Kurz has a comprehensive range of decoration technologies which can be used for both functional and highly decorative symbol illumination, and for surface designs with unusual lighting effects. These cover full-surface backlighting of carbon, wood, metal or colored designs. In these designs when the lighting fixtures are activated, the base designs take on a modified form and totally different color and material effects are created.

It is also possible to implement partially backlit designs in which during the daytime, viewers will see only a single- or multi-colored solid decorative surface. However, when it is backlit, various levels of transparency can be seen and both the solid and translucent elements become visible. A few of Kurz’s designs may appear deceptively simple but when backlit acquire a striking depth effect.

Kurz presented several such innovative designs using a wide range of backlit and decorated automotive components at the K 2016 show which was held from September 19 – 26 in Düsseldorf..

Dead front effects, touch and gesture functions
At the show, Kurz not only showcased its backlit surface designs, but also the company’s expertise when it comes to integrating touch and gesture functions and dead front effects. The company used sensor technology or PolyTC technology obtained from its subsidiary PolyIC, to equip plastic parts with a sensor function which that can be made invisible when it is not active. Viewed during daylight hours, the component will appear to be a solid, opaque decorative surface but when a light source is activated by touching or approaching it, a control panel becomes visible.

Visitors to the company’s booth at the show were able to test these functions on demonstration parts using a touch control panel, through gesture control and a dead front effect. The booth also had a trackpad demonstrator with backlightable symbols made with means of IMD (in-mold decoration) technology which can be operated through an integrated multi-touch function.
