As part of its continual efforts to enhance the safety of customers, Al-Futtaim Motors worked closely with government authorities in the UAE to conduct 20 raids on distributors of counterfeit car parts in the first three quarters of this year. These raids resulted in the confiscation of over AED 36 million worth of counterfeit parts. Al-Futtaim Motors is the exclusive distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the UAE,

The company’s contribution to these efforts was to conduct a series of training sessions as part of which over 240 government officials in Dubai and Abu Dhabi gained the expertise needed to differentiate between genuine and fake Toyota parts. Al-Futtaim Motors also conducted a public awareness drive to educate the public about the importance of using genuine parts.

As part of this campaign, Al-Futtaim Motors teamed up with the Dubai Police to conduct two exhibitions throughout the third quarter at two different shopping malls. These exhibitions were meant to educate the public about the risks they took on when they bought fake car parts, and to help them spot the differences between genuine parts and counterfeit parts that are sold by unauthorized distributors.

Commenting on fake parts, Saud Abbasi, Managing Director of Toyota at Al-Futtaim Motors said that fake parts are not made by certified manufacturers and are thus not required to confirm to the high safety and quality standards that genuine parts have to meet. Customers need to become more aware about the importance of buying only genuine parts from authorized dealers as they could be otherwise putting their lives and those of their loved ones at risk.

Genuine parts of Toyota and Lexus vehicles are sold by Al-Futtaim Motors and are built to meet the highest in quality standards. They are hence safe, durable and will last for a lot longer than spurious parts from unauthorized distributors.

Dubai has electric cars but it may take a while to see hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles on Dubai roads. Al Futtaim Motors took the initiative of recently opening the first refueling station for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCV) in Dubai, close to Toyota’s Al Badia showroom in Dubai Festival City. The company worked closely with the French company Air Liquide to open the station as part of its long term plans to launch Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Mirai model in the UAE.

Three Mirai vehicles have been tested in the UAE as part of Al-Futtaim’s bid to get government organizations to consider the use of FCVs. It is still unclear as to how soon they are likely to become available commercially in the UAE.

Hydrogen powered models like the Mirai are quite similar to models powered by petrol in that they need only three to five minutes for refueling unlike battery powered EVs. The 2016 Mirai can go as far as 502 kilometres when it has a full tank of hydrogen, or enough to go from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and back twice over. In order to make the use of such vehicles viable on a commercial basis, there needs to be an extensive network of refueling stations across the country
.
According to Saud Abbasi, managing director of Toyota at Al Futtaim Motors, it is similar to the chicken and egg scenario as the vehicles cannot be sold in large numbers unless there is a network of refueling stations and there would be more refueling stations only if there are more vehicles on the road. There should be at least 10-12 stations across the country for full coverage and for motorists to have confidence that they would be able to refuel when needed.

Charging stations are expensive to set up and maintain. According to a project manager for Air Liquide, a hydrogen fuelling station costs around USD 2 million to build while a conventional petrol station would cost about USD 300,000 for a conventional US petrol station (based on figures from Minnesota-based Jux law firm).

The UAE is promoting the use of eco-friendly vehicles, but as of now, the emphasis is on the use of electric cars like those from Tesla. Dubai is offering several incentives like exception from Salik, exception from registration fees, free parking and free public charging for those who use electric cars. Currently, such incentives are not available for those who own hydrogen FCVs, though this might change in the future.

Al-Futtaim Motors, which is the exclusive distributor for Toyota and Lexus in the UAE recently worked closely with the Al Ain Economic Department and legal authorities in the UAE to help confiscate a large shipment of counterfeit Lexus and Toyota spare parts, which was worth about AED 7.6 million.

The raid was the outcome of months of painstaking investigation and collaboration between Al-Futtaim Motors, officials working for the Al Ain Economic Development Department and legal authorities. In the raid,  almost 100,000 pieces of fake Toyota and Lexus spare parts including equipment that plays a key role in the proper functioning of engines like air and oil filters were seized.

Speaking about the drive against fake parts, Ralf Zimmermann, Director of After Sales at Al-Futtaim Motors said that the company has continued to work with government entities across the UAE to tackle the issue of counterfeit parts and on sustaining the progress made in 2015 and 2016.

He added, “It’s imperative that customers know the importance of using only genuine parts on their vehicles, as doing otherwise can put their lives, the lives of their loved ones and the lives of the public at great risk.”

Fake parts are not made according to manufacturer standards and generally fail to the quality and safety standards set by both the manufacturer and the government. This significantly compromises the reliability and safety of vehicles.

In order to complement its anti-counterfeit efforts, Al-Futtaim Motors provided training over 330 officials from several government organizations with training in 2016. The training was meant to help officials increase their vigilance and to help them identify the differences between fake and original parts as well as to give them the expertise needed to educate consumers about the importance of using genuine parts.

A total of 31 raids were conducted in 2016, and of these, one major raid alone resulted in seizure of over 10,400 pieces of fake products. These included brake pads and head gasket kits, worth approximately AED 1 million. Just in the third quarter, over 47,300 counterfeit products were confiscated, including more than 22,300 pieces of counterfeit oil filters valued at approximately AED 600,000. This was in addition to more than 10,000 pieces of counterfeit brake pad kits worth AED 1.2 million, and almost 8,000 pieces of counterfeit air filters worth approximately AED 600,000. Taken together, almost AED 40 million worth of fake goods were confiscated during these raids.

Customers can purchase genuine spare parts for Toyota, Lexus, Hino and Toyota Material Handling Equipment brands from Al-Futtaim Motors. These parts are built to meet the highest quality standards, so that customers benefit from better safety, longevity and added value.

Al-Futtaim Motors, which has been the exclusive distributor of Toyota in the UAE for the past 61 years, formally opened to the public its most advanced and largest Toyota facility in the UAE named The Wave in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi. The flagship, five-level, 3 S facility highlights the company’s continuous investment in the capital.

The building which is spread over 14, 000 square meters has separate areas which have been exclusively demarcated for world-class Sales, Service and Spare Parts offerings. It is positioned as the largest, most sophisticated retail and service space for Toyota in the Middle East, and is set to deliver world-class customer experiences with regard to all aspects – be it Sales, Service or even to leisure visitors.

The service area has 64 bays that can accommodate as many as 250 cars on a daily basis while the showroom area has 80 new and used models on display. The entire area has been carefully designed from a customer’s perspective with plenty of opportunities for physical and digital interactions, in order to cater to the interests and questions of visitors.

The interiors of the facility were designed by UK-based Greenspace, a design consultancy firm that specializes in creating legacy experience destinations and which was selected for the project based on their experience of working with Toyota Motor Europe and other automotive retail brands.

Some of the distinctive features and attractions of The Wave include:

  • The Toyota Design Studio where customers can build their dream Toyota using physical and digital design tools
  • A Café with seating capacity for 60 guests that offers plenty of space for relaxation and serves hot and cold refreshments. WiFi, charging points and TVs are available at the café.
  • The Toyota Play Space where children can drive electric cars on a 100m indoor track, in addition to 3D printers for live printing of souvenirs, a coloring and toy-building area, and VR headsets for a unique gaming experience.
  • A Toyota Heritage Zone showing exhibits highlighting 61 years of Al-Futtaim Motors and Toyota’s partnership in the UAE

  • A world-class Toyota Service Center where customers can pre-book and have their car serviced by highly-skilled Al-Futtaim Motors professionals

Speaking about the new facility, Saud Abbasi, Managing Director of Toyota at Al-Futtaim Motors, said that the opening of the flaghip facility, coming on the heels of the opening of Al-Futtaim’s latest facility in Madinat Zayed, highlights the company’s commitment to Abu Dhabi and aligns closely with its desire to move closer to customers. The Wave is unique, not just from an architectural perspective but also represents al-Futtaim’s dedication to customer service excellence. The facility has been designed to put the customer first, and to offer all its guests interactive and engaging experiences regardless of the purpose of their visit.”

On the exterior of the building, approximately 5,000m of LED lights have been installed and they have been pre-programmed for animated film sequences to enhance the emotional appeal of the building in the evening. The architectural lighting scheme utilizes the curving rooflines of the building as well as its louvered panel façade.

Digital Experience

From a digital perspective, the customer experience is enhanced by digital screens on each floor, which provide customers with information and interactivity through multiple touchpoints. Through digital touchscreens, guests can choose a model, the interior and exterior colors, or review accessories – all with the swipe of a finger. Two large touch screens are linked to a mirrored display, allowing the user to navigate on an interactive table without a hitch, therefore making the browsing and selection process easy and decisive.

These digital touchscreens help customers to visualize both the interiors and the exteriors of the vehicle and understand the pros and cons of different customization options. These touch-points include touch screens next to each car providing specs, photos and videos. Large video walls attract attention and broadcast marketing campaigns, while interactive tables and walls help customers configure cars and families play and learn about Toyota engineering and technologies.

As far as possible, Al-Futtaim Motors intends to make the entire customer experience paperless, and will instead, rely on digital technology to engage and inform visitors seamlessly. Each sales associate is equipped with a tablet, and these tablets are connected to each other, to the network and to a nearby printer to facilitate quick sharing, and easy printing.

The Wave is located in Musaffah, between 16th Street and 18th Street, near the Musaffah Police Station and Dalma mall. The facility will be operational six days a week from 8am until 8pm, Saturday through Thursday. The showroom and service center will be closed on Fridays.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is considering the possibility of using hydrogen-powered vehicles as taxis in its bid to enhance sustainability in its transport network, according to a report that appeared in Gulf News.

Today was the first day of the International Conference on Future Mobility and witnessed the launch of the hydrogen fuel vehicle, Toyota Mirai, in the Middle East. The Mirai is a zero emission car that is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and go for 500 kilometers with a single refuel, which takes only minutes. Electric vehicles, on the other hand need a longer time to recharge.

Following the launch of the Toyota Mirai, Ahmad Hashem Behroozian, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency, said that he would definitely be considering hydrogen fuel as an option for the long term, when it comes to taxis. According to experts, hydrogen-powered vehicles are a lot more environmentally clean and can run for longer distances when compared to electric vehicles. The tank can be refilled in just a few minutes as in the case of a vehicle that uses conventional fossil fuels.

When asked about the possibility of using electric vehicles, behroozian said that using them is a bit challenging, especially in the Middle East as the AC system uses up a lot of power and batteries get drained quickly. This affects the distances the vehicles can travel on a single charge. It would be more sustainable to operate hybrid vehicles.

Currently, RTA has a fleet of hybrid vehicles, which use both petrol and self-charging batteries, and is also conducting a trial of an electric bus.

Unveiling the Mirai, Len Hunt, president of Al-Futtaim Automotive Group, said: “This is a significant step forward in our journey towards contributing to the possible development of a hydrogen society, in which everything from vehicles to work and living places are powered by the zero-emission hydrogen.”

Toyota has teamed up with French firm Air Liquide to supply hydrogen fuel and, as part of the trial, two hydrogen fuelling stations have been set up in Dubai.

The cost of filling up on hydrogen is comparable to the cost of petrol in Europe and America. However, experts feel that it might be cheaper to produce hydrogen in the UAE as there are abundant sources of power in the country including solar plants, oil refineries and sewage sludge. According to François Darchis, senior vice-president, Air Liquide, the cost is likely to come down in the next 10 to 15 years.
