Michelin brings on-track performance and data to the Middle East with new smartphone app and advanced range of next-gen tyres

Michelin, the world’s leading provider of advanced and high-performance driving solutions, will take motoring performance, information and enjoyment up a gear with the regional launch of its new smartphone app and next-generation range of MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres.

The ultimate resource for motorists and sports drivers, the MICHELIN Track Connect app delivers unparalleled access to key information and essential data related to a car’s handling, grip and the suitability of its tyres and highly specific advice for optimal tyre pressure, inflation, temperature and much more. It also provides information on driver’s style, performance and skill for an all-round superior experience behind the wheel, whether on the racetrack or commuting around the city.

Paired with the new range of MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, the MICHELIN Track Connect app works as an onboard coach via sensors fitted inside each tyre and can make accurate suggestions for tyre pressure to reflect driving conditions such as dry, damp or wet both for the track or road.

Developed in close collaboration with dedicated motorsports fans and car clubs, Michelin’s app and new tyre range represent the next generation of readable and adaptable data, which is presented in an intuitive and highly engaging way thanks to an easy-to-use interface that operates via iOs and Android phones.

Information is updated in real time while driving and stored to be accessed after a session or journey, with the app indicating any adjustments that need to be made before the next trip.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres represent the latest advancement in on-the-road mobility technology with superb construction, durability and sporty performance. A major upgrade on the current range of tyres currently on the market, MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres deliver faster and more consistent lap times, excellent steering control plus improved handling. Drivers will also be impressed with the standout elevated style of the premium touch sidewall design.

Marc Pasquet, President – Michelin, Africa, India and Middle East region, said: “We are excited to introduce drivers and motorsports enthusiasts alike in the region to our high-performance range of MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and the MICHELIN Track Connect smartphone app. Offering cutting edge levels of data, information and personalization, when paired together these two features will give motorists unrivalled access to key statistics and analytics that will help to improve their performance on the track and better understand how their car handles, and how they drive, day to day.”

“The MICHELIN Track Connect really does put motorists in the driving seat in terms of accessing key metrics that can have a huge impact on their time behind the wheel and adds another dimension of personalization and accessibility to their track experience, while the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres provide the highest possible standards of grip, performance, reliability and, above all, enjoyment on the road.”

When driving, the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres will offer drivers a faster experience, enhanced steering control and optimized footprint on the road for maximized steering precision.

MICHELIN Track Connect is available to download on IOS and Android and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres will be available from June, across the Middle East in various sizes from 17” to 21” and with a new checkered-flag premium touch sidewall design.

At the Group’s Capital Markets Day, Florent Menegaux, Managing Chairman, and Yves Chapot, General Manager and Chief Financial Officer, accompanied by all the members of the Group Executive Committee, presented Michelin in Motion, Michelin’s “All Sustainable” strategy for 2030.

Mr. Menegaux explained the Group’s “All Sustainable” vision, which is based on the constant search for the right balance between People, Planet and Profit. He also presented the Group’s ambitions for 2030, based on twelve indicators covering its environmental, social, societal and financial performance (see details on page 4).

In particular, he emphasized the Group’s commitment to:

People

  • achieving an employee engagement rate of more than 85%
  • increasing the percentage of women in management positions to 35%
  • setting the global standard in workplace safety, with a TCIR of less than 0.5

Planet

  • sharply reducing its CO2 emissions, in Scopes 1 and 2 (by 50% compared with 2010) and in transportation-related Scope 3, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in these scopes by 2050
  • sharply increasing the sustainable raw materials content in all its products to 40% by 2030, in line with its target of 100% by 2050

Profit

  • driving sustained growth, with an average 5% increase per year in sales between 2023 and 2030, once the current Covid-19-related crisis is over
  • deriving 20% to 30% of sales from non-tire businesses
  • guaranteeing the creation of significant value, with a more than 10.5% ROCE between 2023 and 2030.

New non-tire growth territories

Michelin will continue to expand, invest and innovate in its tire businesses. Post-Covid mobility trends and the accelerating growth of the electric vehicle market represent genuine growth opportunities for the Group, which has developed unrivaled technological leadership in the design and manufacture of tires purpose-engineered for EVs. In the road transportation segment, the Group will selectively focus on creating value, while in Mining, Earthmover, Agricultural, Aircraft and other specialty tires, Michelin intends to remain the benchmark by capitalizing on the differentiation of its products and services.

Led by its capacity for innovation and its materials expertise, Michelin is also looking to drive strong expansion in five around and beyond tire business segments: Services & Solutions, flexible composites, medical devices, metal 3D printing and Hydrogen mobility.

  • In Services & Solutions, the Group is going to broaden and deepen its portfolio of fleet solutions, in particular by leveraging smart objects and the value of its collected data.
  • Michelin also hopes to expand significantly in the very fast growing flexible composites market (conveyors, belts, coated fabrics, seals, etc.) by pursuing its value-creating mergers and acquisitions strategy and incubating new businesses.
  • Medical devices also represent a growth opportunity in the years ahead.
  • In metal 3D printing, the Group has developed unique expertise that supports the ability of AddUp, its joint venture with Fives, to market a comprehensive range of tailor-made solutions for manufacturers.
  • In Hydrogen mobility, the Group is seeking to become a world leader in hydrogen fuel cell systems through Symbio, its joint venture with Faurecia.

An initial milestone in 2023

During the Capital Markets Day, Michelin also presented the various industrial competitiveness drivers that will deliver €80 million in savings a year, net of inflation, between 2020 and 2023. Moreover, SG&A expenses in the tire business will be reduced by €65 million, net of inflation, by 2023 and by a total of €125 million by 2025.

Yves Chapot then announced the Group’s financial objectives for 2023. That year, the Group expects to report around €24.5 billion in sales, more than €3.3 billion in segment operating income3, €3.3 billion in structural free cash flow (total over 2022 and 2023), and a ROCE of 10.5%.

In addition, the Group has begun to calculate the costs of some of its negative externalities, like carbon emissions and water and solvent use, and is committed to reducing them by around 10% by 2023.

Lastly, the Group has decided to revise its dividend policy, with the new goal of paying out 50% of earnings before non-recurring items in 2021.

During the Capital Markets Day, Mr. Menegaux noted: “With this new Michelin In Motion strategic plan, the Group is embarking on an ambitious growth dynamic for the next ten years. I am convinced that the engagement and capacity for innovation of our teams will enable us to deliver a harmonious blend of sustained business performance, continuous employee development, and a commitment to the planet and our host communities. Even as it remains true to its DNA, by 2030 the Group’s profile will have significantly changed with the ramp-up of new, high value-added businesses in both around and beyond markets. It is this ability to constantly reinvent itself that has underpinned Michelin’s strength for more than 130 years and which today gives us confidence in the future.”

Mr. Chapot added: “Despite the current crisis and the still uncertain economic environment, Michelin has demonstrated the resilience of its fundamentals and the validity of its business model. This new Michelin In Motion strategic plan will give the Group the means to drive new growth and reduce the impact of its main negative externalities. Michelin will continue to develop its tire operations while integrating new businesses, with a constant focus on maintaining a robust balance sheet and firm margins.”

To further strengthen its leadership position in India, especially in the commercial vehicle (CV) segment, Apollo Tyres has introduced a breakthrough product in cross-ply technology. The launch of Apollo Abhimanyu, a cross-ply rib tyre for steer axles in CVs, will help the company capitalise on the upsurge in the cross-ply industry in recent months in India, and radialisation on steer axles still being at lower levels compared to drive axles. This rib tyre has been launched basis the customers’ feedback, and many man hours of research and development to perfect the product to deliver the best performance to the end consumers across applications.
Before the launch, Apollo Abhimanyu has been tested for more than 2.5 million kilometres, both at the company’s indoor testing facilities, as well as, in real time conditions across all applications. Designed and developed at Apollo Tyres Global R&D Centre Asia, in Chennai, this tyre is currently being produced at the company’s manufacturing unit in Perambra, Kerala. The company intends to create a new benchmark in performance with Apollo Abhimanyu in the steer tyre space, where the radialisation is still to catch-up, and bias tyres still account for over 60% of the overall steer tyre category.
Apollo Abhimanyu is a quantum leap in cross-ply technology, made possible by host of innovations on the product design and compound technology. The company promises to deliver 15% better Initial Tread Mileage (ITM) to ensure the maximum profitability for the customers, while the heat ageing resistant casing with HEART platform ensures best in class durability, retreadability and casing value. These tyres are best suited for carrying rated to moderate loads and fitment on steer axles in the Regional Cargo, Tippers, PMST applications and on all positions in passenger buses.
Commenting on the launch, Satish Sharma, President, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa (APMEA), Apollo Tyres Ltd said “The steer position is the most critical on any commercial vehicle, and the tyre used on its steer axle position demands highest design precision and manufacturing controls. To continue our leadership position in the CV segment and create a benchmark in the cross-ply category, even when the radialisation is happening at a fast pace, it is important for us to have such differentiating products.”
The optimised tread compound of Apollo Abhimanyu with higher wear resistance and better distribution of rubber at wearing zones, along with innovative cavity design that ensures uniform pressure distribution across footprint provides maximum mileage. Abhimanyu tyres have a robust casing due to the specially designed carcass architecture which provides better sidewall stiffness, the new generation off-shoulder design improves heat dissipation and reduces stress marks, thereby keeping the carcass cooler and safer in these tyres. The tread cap compound is 10% cooler than other tyres for faster and longer distances.

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced today that its “ADVAN Sport V107” has received technical certification as original equipment on Mercedes-AMG’s new SUV, the GLB 35 4MATIC, which went on sale in Europe in December 2019. The GLB 35 can be outfitted with 21-inch 255/35ZR21 98Y size “ADVAN Sport V107” tires.

“ADVAN Sport V107” tires are the ultimate high-performance tires in Yokohama Rubber’s premier ADVAN brand. The version of the “ADVAN Sport V107” that received technical certification for use on the GLB 35 was jointly developed with Mercedes-AMG to achieve the superior dry and wet performance required by SUVs. The tire’s superior wet performance, achieved by adjusting the tread pattern’s groove area and using a specially developed compound, has earned the EU labeling system’s highest “A” grade. In addition, its structure and compound have been fine-tuned to deliver the superior handling and steering stability that are indispensable for high-power premium cars. In recognition of the tire’s high standard, its sidewall bears the automaker’s “MO1” mark of approval.

The consumer tire business in Yokohama Rubber’s new three-year (2021–2023) medium-term management plan, Yokohama Transformation 2023 (YX2023), aims to maximize the sales ratios of high-value-added YOKOHAMA tires, namely the global flagship ADVAN brand, the GEOLANDAR brand of tires for SUVs and pickup trucks, and various winter tires. One of the key initiatives being implemented under this strategy is the expansion of ADVAN and GEOLANDAR tires as original equipment on new cars.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has announced its new Discoverer® Rugged Trek™ tire is now available for dealer orders. The Discoverer Rugged Trek is an all-season truck and SUV tire made for off-road adventuring while offering outstanding on-road performance for everyday use. Boasting a long-lasting warranty of up to 60,000 miles, the Discoverer Rugged Trek offers the best of both worlds for the off-road hobbyist and daily commuter. Building on this duality, Discoverer Rugged Trek offers drivers a choice between two unique upper sidewall designs, one on each side of the tire, allowing for a customized look. Both sides offer long, deep cleats for off-road traction, as well as bold, black raised lettering in every size – a first for any Cooper tire line on the market. “We’re excited to bring the Discoverer Rugged Trek to our dealer network because we know how long consumers have been looking for a tire just like this,” said Michiel Kramer, Executive Director, Product Marketing for Cooper Tire. “It gives consumers the freedom to go anywhere, with excellent traction when they venture off the beaten path while still offering a smooth ride to work on Monday morning.” When on the highway, Discoverer Rugged Trek utilizes Whisper Grooves™ that block the rush of air through the tire, helping to eliminate noise at high speeds. To improve overall stability and control, Discoverer Rugged Trek employs Cooper’s Stable Trac™ Technology: omni-directional, micro gauge siping that enhances traction on roads and rough surfaces. The tire also features a unique pattern that keep rocks and stones out of the tire and on the trail where they belong. “It has all the hallmarks of an aggressive off-roading tire, with strong grip, deep treads and an aggressive upper sidewall design” said Kramer. “Drivers don’t typically associate that kind of tire with long-distance road trips and quiet highway drives, but Discoverer Rugged Trek is designed to take on both jobs with ease.” Manufactured at Cooper’s Texarkana, Ark., and Findlay, Ohio plants, the Discoverer Rugged Trek is now available for dealers to order through their local Cooper Tires sales representative.

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. announced today that it is supplying “ADVAN Sport V107” tires for use as original equipment on BMW’s new iX3, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with an all-electric-drive system from the BMW brand. Yokohama Rubber began shipping the tires to the BMW Group in September 2020, supplying three sizes for the new all-electric drive SAV—245/50R19 105W, 245/45R20 103W, and 275/40R20 106W.

“ADVAN Sport V107” tires are the ultimate high-performance tires in Yokohama Rubber’s premier ADVAN brand. The tires being supplied for the BMW iX3 were jointly developed with the BMW Group. They feature a special compound developed to reduce tire heat generation to an unprecedented level that lowers the tires’ rolling resistance, which is indispensable for electric vehicles. As a result, the tires have been assigned the EU labeling system’s highest “A” grade. In addition, in a response to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s regulation on vehicle noise emissions (UN-ECE R51-03), the tire profile and tread pattern have been specially designed to achieve a more uniform road contact pressure that contributes to lower noise emission when the vehicle is accelerating. Developed with consideration for environmental impact as well as driving performance, the “ADVAN Sport V107” tires are undoubtedly the most appropriate tire for BMW’s first EV SAV, the iX3. The tires accordingly feature the German automaker’s star mark symbol of approval on their sidewall.

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., is pleased to announce that machines equipped with ADVAN tires finished first and second in the top JN-1 class at the Shinshiro Rally 2021, Round 2 of this year’s Japanese Rally Championship series, held during March 19-21.

As Round 1 originally scheduled to be held in February was cancelled, the Shinshiro Rally was effectively the first round of this year’s series. Competing in heavy rain, the Toshihiro Arai/Naoya Tanaka team driving the FUJISUBARU AMS WRX STI finished ahead of the pack, followed by the Hiroki Arai/Noritaka Kosaka team in their ADVAN KYB AMS WRX. The result is a great start toward the ultimate goal of capturing the series top JN-1 class championship. Teams drove to the finish on “ADVAN A08B”and “ADVAN A052” street sport tires.

YX2023 positions participation in motorsports activities as crucial to the company’s effort to develop new tire technologies that will further strengthen the ADVAN and GEOLANDAR brands. Yokohama Rubber therefore is again participating in a wide variety of motorsports events in Japan and around the globe, from top-category to grassroots events.

Bridgestone, a global leader providing sustainable mobility and advanced solutions, has recently announced that all of its European tyre plants, European R&D Centre and Proving Ground in Rome, Italy, PCT plant in Lanklaar, Belgium, textile plant in Usansolo, Spain, and Bridgestone EMIA headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, are now powered by electricity from 100 per cent renewable sources.

This announcement marks major progress against the company’s ambition to reduce the environmental impact of its operations: Bridgestone Corporation is committed to the Paris Agreement and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Bridgestone, which announced in March 2020 that 90 per cent of electricity consumed in its European plants came from renewable resources, has been investing to reduce CO2 emissions across the lifecycle of its products and entire value chain.

Commenting on this announcement was Bridgestone EMIA CTO & COO, Emilio Tiberio: “Reducing our CO2 emissions is a key pillar of our long-term sustainability vision, which is why I can’t emphasise enough the significance of this milestone. It’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come in a relatively short chapter of Bridgestone’s long history. 100 per cent was the goal for a long time, but there’s so much more to achieve in emissions reduction and beyond. Let’s use this achievement as inspiration to go out and deliver yet again.
