Volkswagen has selected Vredstein to supply three of its tires as original equipment for the company’s new VW Golf Mark 8.

Three Vredstein tires – the Sportrac 5 summer tire (in the size 195/65R15), the Wintrac Pro (195/65R15) and the Snowtrac 5 (205/55R16) will be used for factory fitment of the eighth generation of the popular Volkswagen Golf. Vredstein already supplies its Vredestein Wintrac Pro as the winter tire for the Volkswagen T-Cross.

The new Golf made its debut on the global stage in October 2019 and will soon be available for purchase at the retail level.

From the time the Volkswagen Golf made its debut in 1974, as many as 35 million Volkswagen Golfs have been sold across the globe, thanks to the reputation that the mid-size family hatchback enjoys for attention to detail and safety features.

Commenting on the new OE fitment, Vredestein UK Country Manager Karl Naylor said that the iconic Golf was definitely is a prestigious model to add to Vredestein’s growing list of OE fitments.

Naylor said, “Its timeless design and successful formula throughout the decades mean that here, in the UK, the Golf has occupied one of the top four spots in the ‘best seller’ car model list for many years.”

Vredestein’s range of tires are hallmarked for their quality, which makes them just the right choice for the VW Golf and other Volkswagen Audi Group models.

“Vredestein’s summer, winter and all-season ranges match Volkswagen’s own quest for very high standards,” Naylor added.

Vredstein now has a wide range of OE fitments across several Volkswagen brands with the Sportrac 5, Quatrac 5, Wintrac Pro being used as OE on models like Polo, T-Cross, Seat Ibiza and Audi A1. The Wintrac Pro is also the preferred winter tire on the Volkswagen T-Cross.

Lanxess will use the Tire Technology Expo which will be held from February 25 to 27 in Hanover to highlight the company’s versatile and sustainable solutions for tire manufacturing.

The company makes a wide range of environmentally friendly and specialty chemicals like its Rhenodiv release agents, Rhenomark tire marking paints, Rhenoshape tire vulcanization bladders, Rhenogran aramid-fibre masterbatches, and special additives.

Commenting on the company’s participation in the Tire Technology Expo, Emre Ekici, Head of Marketing Tire Products at Lanxess’s Rhein Chemie business unit, said that the importance of working closely with “solution providers” has greater significance in light of the environmental and market-related challenges that the tire industry is facing currently. The Rubber Additives range of Lanxess helps tire companies by enhancing tire performance and minimizing their environmental footprint with an extensive portfolio of compound additives, release agents and bladders.

Cleaner and more sustainable

The high-quality tires that are made today call for the use of tailored solutions in their production processes. In the case of low-noise or sealant tires, the removal of the release agents is essential as this would ensure that the polymers, foams or sensors that are applied subsequently will adhere properly. Sensors that have the capability to transmit data can help prevent damage and improve safety.

Rhein Chemie makes a diverse range of release agents. They range from conventional silicone-based products like Rhenodiv BP-286 and Rhenodiv BP-2864 which are removed after vulcanization from the tires with the aid of mechanical washing systems or by laser technology, to the advanced, silicone-free products like Rhenodiv BP-166 and Rhenodiv BP-9500.

The water-based bladder coating Rhenodiv BC-1700 provides a high-performance release on the bladder surface while curtailing the environmental effects and increasing work safety. With their superior lubricity and excellent transfer from green tire to the bladder, Rhenodiv SP-1010 and Rhenodiv SP-1020 make it possible for tire manufacturers to decrease the scrap rates and save resources.

With its broad range of dithiophosphates, special accelerators and fiber masterbatches, Rhein Chemie provides ideal solutions for nitrosamine-free and highly reinforced tire compounds.

Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. Has announced that the company has won the prestigious Good Design awards for two of its tires. The company won the awards for its Geolander X-CV tire and the Geolander X-AT tire. While the Geolander X-CV tire is meant for high-performance crossover SUVs, the Geolander X-AT tire is used in SUVs and pickup trucks.

The Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award, which was first given in 1950, is one of the three most prestigious design awards in the world. It is given by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the jury for the awards comprises experts who evaluate all the entries received for the awards based on stringent parameters related to their design, incorporation of new technologies, materials and function. In 2019, entries were received from over 47 countries across the globe for a wide range of categories including electronics equipment, transportation-related goods, and medical equipment.

Yokohama’s Geolander X-CV tire is a new highway terrain tire that was designed specifically for midsize high-performance crossover SUVs with large monocoque-structure which demonstrate high-speed performance and drivability. Such vehicles are becoming increasingly popular. The Geolander X-AT tire is meant for motorists who are keen on tuning their vehicles for off-road driving while still maintaining on-road driving comfort. This off-road tire sports a distinctly rugged appearance and is capable of delivering an outstanding performance even in the most challenging conditions. The Geolander X-AT also delivers a comfortable on-road ride performance.

The consumer tire strategy in Yokohama Rubber’s medium-term management plan, the Grand Design 2020 (GD2020), involves enhancing Yokohama’s presence in the premium car markets. In line with this strategy, the tire manufacturer is actively working on the development of products with high performance and design sense based on original approaches. Yokohama had won awards for two tires in the 2018 edition of the Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Awards also – for the Geolander X-MT which is a mud-terrain tire for SUVs and pickup trucks, and for the AVID Ascend GT passenger car tire.

Currently, Ceat has a market share of about 10 per cent in the PCR segment and 28 per cent in the two-wheeler tire segment.

Overseas markets

The tires produced at the new factory will also be exported overseas to markets like Europe, the US and South Asia. Ceat exports the tires it makes at its other factories to over 90 countries. Tires for the replacement market account for about 60 percent of Ceat’s revenue while the OEM and export segments account for 30 per cent and 10 per cent of the company’s revenue, respectively.

When it comes to product revenues, while tires for two and three-wheelers contribute about 32 per cent,  truck and bus radial tires contribute to about 30 per cent revenues. PCR, LCV, farm and speciality tires bring in the balance 38 percent of the revenue.

Ceat has OE fitments from about a dozen car manufacturers in India, including the recent Kia and MG Motors pacts. The tire maker also supplies tires to supplies its tires to almost all two-wheeler makers other than TVS Motor, including some electric two-wheeler companies. Leading truck and tractor makers also procure tires from Ceat.

Kumho Tire has bagged yet another OE fitment from the Volkswagen Group. The Korean tire manufacturer’s Crugen Premium KL33 tire has been selected as an optional OE tire for Audi’s 2020 Q5 luxury compact SUV.

A 19-inch variant of the Kumho Crugen Premium KL33 tire will be used as the optional OE fitment on the 2020 Q5 which Audi assembles at its plant in Mexico for distribution and sale across North America.

Kumho Tire Co. Inc. manufactures the Crugen tires at its factory in Macon, Ga., and sends them to Audi’s assembly plant in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico.

Commenting on the fitment, Kim Insoo, senior vice president of OE sales at Kumho Tire said that it attested to Kumho’s ongoing commitment to excellence. Kumho will be producing 19-inch Crugen Premium KL33 tires in high volume in line with the specifications needed to help Audi’s Q5 deliver its optimal performance.

Insoo said, “Demand for SUVs in the United States is booming, and we will remain devoted to developing our SUV tires to satisfy the needs of all our customers.”

The Kumho OE fitment for the five-passenger, four-door all-wheel-drive hatchback Q5 is 235/55R19, which carries an H speed rating. The Q5’s standard OE fitment is a 235/60R18.

The Q5 can accelerate from 0-60 mph acceleration in just 5.9 seconds and has a towing capacity of 4,400 pounds thanks to its 2-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. This engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Kumho said that it had developed the Crugen series in line with the growing popularity of urban SUVs. The Crugen KL33 tire incorporates a silica compound that enhances tire life, reduces rolling resistance and increases traction. The tire’s compound and symmetric tread pattern keep tire noise levels to a minimum while improving comfort and handling.

According to data from Automotive News, over 67,000 Q5 SUVs were sold in the United States in 2019.

The Crugen KL33 has also been selected as the OE fitment for the seven-seater Atlas SUV that Volkswagen’s subsidiary in the United States, Volkswagen of America Inc. makes.

Yokohama Rubber Co. has announced that its group company, ATG (Alliance Tire Group), which specializes in the production and sales of off-highway tires supplied its Alliance 392 HD all-steel radial tires to a truck expedition that managed to achieve the goal of reaching the highest point on Earth ever reached by a motor vehicle.

ATG carried out the expedition in collaboration with the company’s distributer in Germany, Bohnenkamp. The expedition was carried out as part of a project to install shelters and an emergency wireless radio system as well as achieving the record high altitude on Ojos del Salado. Ojos del Salado is the world’s highest active volcano which is located in the Andes Mountains on the border between Argentina and Chile. The project team completed the installation at 6,400 meters above sea level and managed to climb up to an altitude of 6,694 meters above sea level. This, according to the company is the highest point ever reached by a motor vehicle. The Alliance 392 HD tires from ATG played a key role in the success of the expedition as they delivered outstanding performance on really demanding surface conditions which included jagged lava rocks, volcanic sand, and steep slopes, and also sported a wide temperature range that varied from -30 degrees C to +35 degrees C.

The Alliance 392 HD tire is an all-steel radial tire that has the capability to support heavy loads. It also has a high floatation structure that makes it possible for the truck to float over sand and loose soil by minimizing soil compaction, thus providing a greater level of protection to the soil. Other notable features of the tire include impressive handling stability, durability, and wear resistance across a wide range of vehicle speeds and in severe climates and terrains, like those experienced at the high altitudes by the  recent expedition.

Yokohama Rubber’s current medium-term management plan, the Grand Design 2020 (GD2020) also includes a strategy for commercial tires that targets “Positioning commercial tires as a pillar of growth in our second century and off-highway tires as a growth driver.” In line with this strategy, the company is making an effort to increase the sales of off-highway tires including ATG tires for agricultural, forestry, and construction machinery, as well as Group company Aichi Tire Industry’s tires for industrial machinery, and Yokohama tires for trucks, buses and construction machinery.

Yokohama Rubber has announced that it has developed a new concept tire derived from its renowned BluEarth tire for the new concept electric vehicle (EV) from Maruti Suzuki, the Concept FUTURO-e.

The tire was in the spotlight when it was fitted and displayed on the Concept FUTURO-e at the booth Maruti India Suzuki had at the recent Auto Expo 2020 which was held from February 7 to 12 in New Delhi.

The Concept FUTURO-e is innovative in terms of not just its powertrain, but also in terms of design. It has a body which has a fusion of coupe and SUV styles. The vehicle was conceptualized as an SUV that would appeal to youngsters in India who are in the market for a vehicle that is both powerful and exciting. The Concept FUTURO-e is Maruti Suzuki’s take on the next-generation in automobile styling.

Developing the tire for such a futuristic vehicle was not an easy task. Yokohama developed the tire for the Concept FUTURO-e based on the brief that it should be “a tire featuring a powerful and stylish design for the new generation of urban SUVs”.

Yokohama Rubber created a design suitable for a new generation of urban SUV’s by combining the large lug grooves that are normally seen in powerful SUVs with rib grooves that are seen in tires used for more stylish and smooth running vehicles.

Goodyear Tire has launched a complete tire management system for commercial fleets. The new system can significantly help reduce downtime and improve fleet operations. Goodyear Tire Management offers a complete solution customized for a fleet’s needs by combining Goodyear’s best-in-class tire monitoring, insights and service capabilities. The range of products and services frees companies to focus on their fleet management and business operations while Goodyear keeps tabs on their tires and provides them with actionable and insightful information to conduct tire service and checks where needed.

Commenting on the new tire management system, Johnny McIntosh, Goodyear’s director of integrated solutions and tire management said that businesses depend on reliable mobility in order to deliver goods and services properly to their customers. Hence, they have a lot riding on their tire investments. If tires are poorly managed, it can affect the overall tire life, fuel efficiency and vehicle uptime. This prompted Goodyear to introduce its tire management system as the tire manufacturer is committed to helping fleets achieve operational and financial efficiencies.

Currently, Goodyear Tire Management comprises four primary products:

Goodyear Tire Optix. This is a digital inspection toolset that has been developed to help fleets quickly and accurately detect data related to critical tire parameters like tire tread depth, tire pressure, and tire wear conditions. The system offers real-time alerts and detailed inspection results, thus helping fleets to  optimize their long-term tire performance.

Goodyear CheckPoint. The Goodyear CheckPoint is a drive-over reader device that provides automated inspections of tire pressure and tread depth. It is an in-ground device that can be positioned at the entrance of a fleet yard to scan passing trucks. In the event that the device detects data that requires attentions, alerts are sent to fleet maintenance. This solution makes it possible for large numbers of vehicles to be inspected efficiently and offers a frequently updated snapshot of tire health.

Goodyear TPMS Plus. This is an on-vehicle, active monitoring system that monitors tire conditions in real-time using Goodyear’s unique, fleet-specific algorithms. TPMS Plus helps fleets to identify critical issues, like tire air leaks and high temperatures, while also providing predictive tire maintenance analytics to minimize the possibility of tire related roadside breakdowns.

Goodyear TireReady. Goodyear Tire Ready is a tire subscription program that can be customized to meet the specific needs of an individual fleet. Goodyear and its network of dealers will deal with the management and optimization of the entire lifecycle of a tire – ranging from new tire choices to retreads, monitoring, service, analytics and more.
