Premium German manufacturer, Continental is now the official supplier of tyres for the all-electric Mercedes EQB. The latest SUV from the EQ range from Mercedes-Benz will come as standard with Continental’s economical 19 inch, EcoContact 6 tyres.

The EcoContact 6 is characterized by its outstanding energy efficiency as well as its superior handling and braking performance. Continental has lowered the rolling resistance of the EcoContact 6 by 15 percent compared with the previous model. The specially developed rubber compound minimizes friction when the tyre is in contact with the road surface, which means that it absorbs less energy and, in turn, rolling resistance is reduced.

The EcoContact 6 recently showed off its energy efficiency as part of the summer tyre test organized by German trade magazine Auto Zeitung (issue 6/22), in which it beat nine other tyres from European, Asian and U.S. manufacturers in a rolling resistance test. In addition, it also offers excellent cornering stability even at high speeds. The tread profile constantly adapts to the road surface, ensuring a longer tyre life.

Automobile manufacturers all over the world rely on Continental as a leading supplier of tyres. In Europe, almost one in three cars roll off the assembly line fitted with Continental tyres. with the German brand proudly supplying seven of the world’s ten most successful makers of electric vehicles with new, eco-friendly tyres.

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced today that it has begun practical testing of its Tire air Pressure Remote access System (TPRS) as a tire solution service for taxi companies. The testing began in May and is being conducted together with the Company’s tire sales subsidiary Yokohama Tire Japan Co., Ltd., and with the cooperation of Kyoto Taxi Co., Ltd., and Koshin Taxi Co. The TPRS test is being conducted using tire air-pressure sensors developed by Yokohama Rubber attached to the inner surface of tires mounted on taxis operated by the two companies in Kyoto Prefecture and surrounding areas.

The testing seeks to verify the effect of TPRS and the air pressure sensors attached to tires’ inner surface, which Yokohama Rubber has developed as part of its response to changes in the automobile industry, such as CASE*1 and MaaS*2. TPRS and the air-pressure sensors attached to tires’ inner surfaces enable car fleet operators and Yokohama Rubber service staff to remotely monitor tire air pressure, temperature, and vehicle location. The system greatly reduces time spent checking tires at the start of each day and records air-pressure data. It enables early detection of slow punctures that cause gradual air leakage. It also contributes to proper tire maintenance, helps prevent inspection irregularities, and improves fuel efficiency by maintaining proper air pressure. In addition, the system’s ability to detect tire abnormalities in real time can help prevent accidents. Detection data is transmitted to a cloud server, enabling the taxi company’s fleet managers and Yokohama Rubber’s sales offices to monitor tire air pressure. An alarm device installed in the taxi operator’s office will notify the fleet manager when air pressure falls to a level that will reduce fuel efficiency or indicates a possible slow puncture. Unlike the conventional valve-type TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), air-pressure sensor attached to tires’ inner surface can be used on a wide variety of vehicles and wheels as an aftermarket part that can be used with any wheel type. Yokohama Rubber previously has conducted practical testing of its TPRS for corporate cars and car-sharing companies, but the current test being conducted with taxi companies that require strict tire management is aimed at establishing a business model that contributes to the improved safety and economical operation of taxi fleets.

The CASE and MaaS initiatives included in Yokohama Transformation 2023 (YX2023), Yokohama Rubber’s medium-term management plan for fiscal years 2021–2023, include the promotion of a new tire solutions service based on the development of a SensorTire (Internet of Things [IoT] tire) with sensing functionality and stronger, more flexible service capabilities. In February 2021, Yokohama Rubber announced its SensorTire Technology Vision, a medium- and long-term technological development vision for passenger car tire sensors. The aim of this new vision is to provide continued support for the safe and sound movement of people while also addressing changes in mobility demand by providing data obtained from IoT tires fitted with sensing functionality to drivers and operators of a diverse range of automobile-related services. To achieve the goals of this vision, Yokohama Rubber is conducting practical testing with partners from various industries.

Rolling resistance champion in its category

Low rolling resistance offers multiple benefits for users depending on their vehicle type:

  • For drivers of internal combustion vehicles, it can reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.21 liters per 100 kilometers (4), representing a saving of €80(5) over the tyre’s road life.
  • For the planet, the reduction in CO2 emissions can be estimated at 174 kg over the tyre’s road life, (5) corresponding to the avoided CO2 emissions from a vehicle traveling more than 1,600 kilometers.(8)
  • For electric vehicles, the MICHELIN e.PRIMACY tyre can increase range by up to 7%.(4)

Designed for lasting performance

The MICHELIN e.PRIMACY tyre delivers high performance from the first to the last kilometer(3)(6). Tread life is extended thanks to MaxTouch Construction technologyTM, which maximizes contact with the road to distribute pressure more evenly during braking and acceleration.

Available in select few countries in 46 SKUs, from 15 to 20 inches and for all vehicle types including hybrid and electric vehicles, MICHELIN e.PRIMACY is spearheading a new generation of eco-designed MICHELIN tyres and is particularly well suited for the transition of the industry to electric or hybrid mobility.

The MICHELIN Primacy 4+ tire: ever greater safety from the first mile to the last

Michelin is also launching its new MICHELIN Primacy 4+ summer tyre, designed for sedans and SUVs, for everyday journeys and long family trips. It stands out with its better braking performance on wet ground when worn (4), offering ever greater safety from the first mile to the last. It owes this performance to the MICHELIN EverGrip technology, which cleverly combines two layers of rubber in order to offset the loss of tread depth and thus continue to better evacuate water when worn.

Safety from the first mile to the last, and a long life characterize the MICHELIN Primacy 4+ summer tyre, will be offered in multiple dimensions from 16-19 inches starting Q2 2022.

Bridgestone, a global leader in tyres and sustainable mobility solutions, has today announced the launch of its new semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza Race tyre. The tyre delivers lap times that beat all main competing tyres1, along with the best braking performance in dry conditions2. Homologated for public roads, but with performance focussed on track days, the Potenza Race also provides outstanding longevity3, helping drivers to enjoy more time on track.
The Potenza Race is the latest addition to Bridgestone’s iconic Potenza tyre range – itself born from Bridgestone’s long association with Formula One racing – empowering motorsports enthusiasts to remain in control at speed. Benefitting from this heritage and the expertise gained during the development of Potenza Race OE fitments for the high-performance Lamborghini Huracán STO and SEAT Leon Cupra hot hatchback, along with the Huracán STO Tecnica supercar launched recently, the Potenza Race is Bridgestone’s first-ever dedicated replacement tyre for track days.

Engineered for track days and circuit use
Leaning on Bridgestone’s vast experience in high performance tyres, the new Potenza Race completes Bridgestone’s ultra-high performance tyre line-up, providing a track-focussed tyre ideal for driving enthusiasts.
According to tests carried out by independent TÜV SÜD, the Bridgestone Potenza Race posts the best lap times ahead of its main competitors on the track.1 The Bridgestone Potenza Race tyre also offers the shortest braking distance on a dry surface, once again beating main competitor tyres.2
The Bridgestone Potenza Race tyre has also been engineered to provide outstanding longevity.3 All of this makes it a great choice for drivers willing to perform and push their limits on track.
High performance enabled by tread pattern, construction and compound
The Bridgestone Potenza Race’s advanced performance is enabled by a collection of new technologies in its tread pattern, construction and compound.
The tread design applies an asymmetric pattern, with differentiation between the outside and inside of the tyre to maximise cornering power and braking potential while still guaranteeing suitable usage on wet roads.
Asymmetric wall angles on the Potenza Race tyre further increase lateral stiffness and reduce block deformation, and a special rear tread pattern with an increased shoulder rib provides maximum dry performance with optimised braking and block stiffness.
To achieve its outstanding track performances, the Potenza Race also incorporates a sporty profile shape, helping to increase the contact area and maximise braking potential. An optimised contact patch helps to improve steering feel and controllability, increasing driver confidence.
The Bridgestone Potenza Race also benefits from a new compound, with innovative mixing to improve chemical reaction control, balancing the reinforcing mechanism and rolling resistance. The result is an optimised formula for enhanced dry performance, with high stiffness that boosts dry cornering and straight-line stability.
‘Completing the range for track lovers’
The new Potenza Race has been developed using Bridgestone’s ground-breaking Virtual Tyre Development technology. This enables a digital version of an in-development tyre to be created and tested, helping Bridgestone to predict how a tyre will perform in different conditions before physically building prototypes. As a result, Bridgestone can test far more variants in a virtual world, which cuts tyre development time by up to 50% and delivers a host of environmental benefits including a reduction in raw material consumptiondue to the need for fewer prototype tyres and tests.
Commenting on this launch was Emilio Tiberio, COO & CTO of Bridgestone EMIA: “The Potenza Race adds an additional dimension to our iconic Potenza range. The existing Potenza Sport has been an incredible success since it launched, and now the Potenza Race takes things a step further by offering unrivalled performance to track day enthusiasts. Many have already seen and experienced what the Potenza Race original fitments can do on the Lamborghini Huracán STO and Seat Leon Cupra – we’re thrilled to be bringing it to the replacement market for more drivers.”
Developed and manufactured in Europe, Bridgestone’s new Potenza Race will be available in 13 popular sizes between 17 and 20 inches from June 2022, supporting the hot hatchbacks and sportscars most commonly found attending track days.
This project aligns with the Bridgestone E8 Commitment that serves as the axis to drive management while earning the trust of future generations. The Bridgestone E8 Commitment consists of eight Bridgestone-like values starting with the letter “E” (Energy, Ecology, Efficiency, Extension, Economy, Emotion, Ease, and Empowerment) that Bridgestone will commit to creating together with employees, society, partners and customers to realize a sustainable society. This project aligns with “Emotion: Committed to inspiring excitement and spreading joy to the world of mobility”.

Even before this year’s edition of the Tour de France begins in Copenhagen on July 1, 2022, Continental will extend its long-standing, trusting partnership and sponsorship activities up to and including 2027. As one of the five main partners and the stage winner partner, together with the Tour’s organising body, ASO, the tyre manufacturer will continue to actively shape the world’s largest and most important cycling race in the coming years, and make its contribution toward a safe and sustainable future for the Tour. This will be alongside the new ContiRe.Tex recycling technology being used in tyre production this year.

A strong Tour de France partner since 2017

Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France, is delighted with the continued co-operation: “Continental is one of the most important innovation partners for the Tour de France, with whom we have grown close in recent years. We are proud to be able to benefit from the know-how of Continental’s experts in tyre technology and sustainability for another five years.”

The co-operation began at the end of 2017 between Continental as a sponsor and safety partner with the Tour de France, at the time already as a tyre supplier for the official support vehicles as well as a manufacturer of the champions’ bicycle tyres. Continental has been one of the five main partners since 2019. “We are looking forward to the successful continuation of our partnership. In particular, the very important topics of road safety and a more sustainable future unite us and form the basis of our great collaboration,” says Ferdinand Hoyos, Head of Continental’s tyre replacement business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Continental supports a more sustainable Tour de France

In addition to premium tyre performance for the cycling pros and their support riders, the sustainable mobility of tomorrow is also a very important part of Continental’s business strategy. By 2030, the company aims to become the world’s most sustainable tyre manufacturer, and is transferring these ambitions to its partnership with the Tour de France. “We welcome the Tour de France’s drive for greater sustainability, and support this wherever possible. That’s why, for example, we are equipping the official support vehicles in this year’s tour with tyres based on our new ContiRe.Tex technology,” explains Hoyos. “Each of these tyre sets incorporates recycled polyester from reprocessed PET material.”

Continental will once again be relied upon as a tyre partner by six of the participating professional cycling teams this tour year: with major regional team Bahrain-Victorious, and international teams, Ineos Grenadiers, Groupama-FDJ, Movistar Team, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux and Team Arkéa-Samsic, all fighting for their place on the podium using custom handmade GP5000 tyres.

The first tour to start in bicycle-crazy Denmark

The 109th edition of the Tour de France starts on July 1 in Europe’s bicycle capital of Copenhagen, Denmark, and, after around 3,335 kilometres and 21 stages, will end on the magnificent Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France, on July 24.

The Continental brand has a very proud heritage and in October last year celebrated its 150th anniversary in the business of mobility. Founded in 1871, in Hanover, Germany, Continental is one of the foremost leaders in tyre technology and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of safe, efficient, and performance-oriented tyres for almost every kind of passenger car, commercial vehicle, and two-wheeler.

With 150 years under its belt, it’s safe to say Continental has quite a story to tell, and there are some quirkier, lesser-known facts about the company that make for an interesting read…

A certain horse

It would be remiss to exclude a mention of the iconic jumping horse in the logo, that so evinces the strength, agility and endurance of not only the company but its products – he (or she) dates all the way back to 1875 and has been a constant since that time. In fact, one of the earliest items produced and distributed by the company was a hoof buffer – a special rubber used to prevent horses from slipping on icy surfaces.

A leader and a pioneer

Over the course of its illustrious history, Continental has produced many world ‘firsts’. In 1904, it was the first company in the world to develop grooved tyres for automobiles. Other firsts in production include the first ever patterned tyre tread and the first ever tubeless tyre, as well the world’s first eco-friendly tyre and the world’s fastest road legal tyre. Continental also produced the world’s first ever driverless car in 1968!

The Middle East can also share in Continental’s list of firsts – 2018 saw the launch of the Generation 6, the first range of tyres specifically designed and produced for the region’s climate and driving conditions. In late 2021, the SportContact 7 tyre was introduced, soon to be followed by more in the Generation 7 stable.

Continental doesn’t limit itself to the tarmac either: in 1909 French aviator, Louis Bleriot was the first to fly the English Channel. The flying surfaces on his mono plane were covered with Conti ‘Aeroplan’ material.

More than tyres

Continental is one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world – also producing brake systems; systems and components for powertrains and chassis; instrumentation; infotainment solutions; vehicle electronics; and technical elastomers.

And now about those dandelions

Always researching and innovating, 2011 saw Continental focussing on the development of an alternative natural material for tyre production – notably, a very high-yield and hardy type of dandelion based on a Russian variety of the plant. The first Continental tyre with a tread made of dandelion rubber was produced in 2014. This ground-breaking development means the company’s tyres are now more sustainable in several ways – landfill waste and microplastic pollution are reduced, as well as the geographical limitations and market volatility attributed to use of the rubber from traditional plantations. This important new and natural rubber and its adoption has received a multitude of awards in the fields of sustainability and technology.

Always spicing things up

Black chili is another innovation from Continental and following on from dandelions, one can grasp just how far outside the proverbial box the company will go to keep forging the way ahead for sustainability and modernisation. Black Chili is a combination of the very latest polymers with specially developed carbon black particles and filler materials – resulting in a revolutionary tyre tread suitable for both cars and bikes. Known for its superior grip, rolling resistance and mileage on the road, the Black Chili tread compound has also been adopted by the professional cycling elite in many of the Tour de France teams.

With 150 years of experience and growth, not to mention a magnificent array of stories and anecdotes gathered along the way, Continental will continue its amazing journey well into the future with promises of many more surprises and innovations on the horizon.

Bridgestone Middle East, India, and Africa (EMEIA) put green mobility in the spotlight anew during its participation at the premier Automechanika Dubai Network on Sustainability. Held recently, the forum formed part of Bridgestone’s overarching efforts to help build a more sustainable mobility ecosystem in the wider region.

Berna Akinci, Bridgestone MEA’s Head of Marketing, was one of the resource speakers of this year’s Automechanika. During her lecture titled ‘Shaping A Sustainable Future of Mobility,’ she provided her insights on the developments and trends impacting the tyre industry today.

Akinci was joined by key international industry experts who tackled sustainability disruptors and mobility trends, amongst other topics.

Akinci said: “To decarbornise the transport industry, stakeholders have been collaborating for efficient implementation of key climate actions over the years. Automechanika provided us another ideal venue to bring our discussions to the next level. During the event, we demonstrated how Bridgestone continues to push boundaries to deliver sustainable, high-performing tyres and implement cutting-edge tyre technologies. Through our efforts we aim to demonstrate how we prioritise sustainability to help make mobility more environment-friendly for the sake of the current and future generations.”

Bridgestone is known for its longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability and mission. The company’s leadership and employees are committed to changing the game by being leaders in sustainable behaviour.

This commitment is evident in its numerous key programmes such as its Sustainability Business Framework and the E8 Commitment. The latter covers the organisation’s climate change mitigation efforts and investments in new energy economy.

Bridgestone also ensures that sustainable practices are employed and improved across the enterprise. By doing so, it aims to be a responsible steward of the environment and a shining example of corporate sustainability.
