AkzoNobel has finalized a wide-ranging supply deal with BMW with the company’s premium Sikkens and Lesonal brands now being approved for paint repairs of BMW and Mini passenger cars. The German brand has chosen AkzoNobel as a supplier of vehicle refinish products and services to a large part of its distribution network around the world and the deal came into effect from February 1.

The agreement covers 44 countries and outlines that premium Sikkens and Lesonal brands are now approved for making paint repairs of BMW and Mini passenger cars at authorized dealers, repairers, importers and national BMW Group branches.

Commenting on the deal, Patrick Bourguignon, managing director of AkzoNobel’s Automotive and Specialty Coatings business said that the company was delighted to begin working with the BMW Group, as it is one of the premium automotive brands in the world.

He concluded, “We believe Sikkens and Lesonal are the perfect match to further enhance the customer service offer and efficiency of the BMW network.”

BMW confirmed the deal after extensive analysis of the product assortments and services provided AkzoNobel’s Sikkens and Lesonal brands.

Jörg Anders, global key account director of AkzoNobel’s Vehicle Refinish and Automotive business said that the company was excited to bring its premium brands and business services to a new audience. He added, “Across 44 countries, body shops will benefit from class-leading vehicle refinish systems featuring our innovative and sustainable products and leading digital color tools.”

AkzoNobel not only offers proven performance and high-quality coatings, but is also a leader when it comes to the development of innovative digital color tools.

The company offers a cloud-based color retrieval application, Mixit, which gives its customers instant access to over 2 million color formulas. When Mixit is used in combination with the compact handheld spectrophotometer, Automatchic, it is possible to perform any pain job faster, more accurately and with less waste.

Customers also have the opportunity to benefit from a premium service that can enhance the business performance of their organizations. With Carbeat, AkzoNobel offers a state-of-the-art digital bodyshop workflow solution which increases production management efficiency and reduces cycle times.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors Corporation have announced that they have developed the first predictive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Connected Shift System in the world. This is technology that makes it possible for the vehicle to automatically shift to the gear that is best depending on the road and traffic conditions. Both companies plan to implement the technology in future models. Hyundai and Kia have already filed about 40 major patents related to the technology in South Korea and overseas.

A few technologies like the Smart Drive Mode in Kia and Hyundai models are already available which can switch gears based on drivers’ preferences, but the ICT Connected Shift System is the first ICT that can automatically shift the gear to the optimal one based on road and traffic conditions.

ICT Connected Shift System leverages intelligent software in the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) that performs the task of collecting and interpreting real-time data from underlying technologies. These include 3D navigation equipped with a precise map of the road as well as cameras and radar for smart cruise control. The 3D navigation input includes parameters like elevation, gradient, curvature and a variety of road events as well as current traffic conditions. Radar is used to detect the speed and distance between the vehicle and others, and lane information is received through a forward-looking camera.

AI helps predict optimal shift scenario
Using the data that is thus obtained, the TCU uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to predict the optimal shift scenario for real-time driving situations and switches the gears accordingly. One instance is when there is a high chance for a relatively long slow down and the radar detects no speed irregularities with the car ahead. In such a scenario, the transmission clutch temporarily switches to neutral mode to improve fuel efficiency.

Hyundai and Kia tested a vehicle having an ICT Connected Shift System on a heavily curved road and found that the frequency of shifts in cornering was reduced by approximately 43 percent when compared to vehicles which did not have the system. The system also reduced the frequency of brake operation by approximately 11 percent, thus minimizing driving fatigue and brake wear.

When fast acceleration was required to enter a highway, the driving mode was automatically changed to Sport Mode at the merge, thus making it easier for the vehicle to join the traffic flow. After merging with traffic, the vehicle automatically resumed the original driving mode, facilitating safe and efficient driving.

The engine brakes also were automatically applied upon release of the accelerator pedal by determining speed bumps, downhill slopes and identification of the location of the speed limit change on the road. The front radar detected changes in distance from the vehicle in front to adjust appropriate transmission gear automatically, and this enhanced the quality of the ride.

The system also marks an advance in the development of autonomous technology. The ICT Connected Shift System will deliver both improved fuel efficiency and a stable driving experience in the era of autonomous vehicles by providing improving performance based on data related to road and traffic conditions in real time.

Hyundai and Kia plan to further develop the ICT Connected Shift System into an even more intelligent transmission technology that will have the capability to communicate with traffic signals based on LTE or 5G communication and identify drivers’ tendencies, thus further refining gear-shift control.

“Vehicles are evolving beyond simple mobility devices into smart mobility solutions,” said Byeong Wook Jeon, Head of Intelligent Drivetrain Control Research Lab. “Even a traditional area of the automobile, such as the powertrain, is becoming a high-tech technology optimized for smart mobility through efforts to integrate ICT and artificial intelligence technologies.”

During JEC World 2020 trade fair in Paris (3-5 March), Covestro will be presenting innovative and sustainable material solutions for various industries. One important application is lightweight and robust components for vehicles that reduce fuel consumption and emissions, or increase the range of electric cars.

 

High strength, low weight and efficient production techniques are making composites increasingly popular. Covestro has developed a wide range of thermoplastic polycarbonate and thermoset polyurethane composites, and has thereby become a leading supplier.

 

For the newly designed wheels of the SUVs ES8 und ES6 the Chinese electric vehicle SUV start-up NIO uses thermoplastic composites of the Maezio brand from Covestro.

 

Working in close cooperation with its customers and partners, Covestro has expanded the range of applications for its composites from pultruded profiles and facade mounting elements, to large rotor blades for wind turbines, miniaturized electronic components and sports articles which can be produced in large quantities with short cycle times.

 

Covestro has developed a new composite technology. This new technology makes it possible to manufacture really thin, lightweight, high-strength aesthetic parts based on CFRTP on an industrial scale. These parts are marketed under the Maezio brand.

 

One such example of an application is the redesigned wheels of the ES8 and ES6 SUVs of the renowned  Chinese electric car start-up NIO. At K 2019, Covestro presented decorative wheel blades which were made of CFRTP composites with which the wheels can be optionally equipped.

 

A similar innovation was an ultra-thin robust table that Covestro developed with partners as part of a new car interior concept and showcased at K 2019. The table needs only minimal design space and is notable for its impressive aesthetics and surface finish.

 

 

At JEC Word 2020, in addition to the innovative thermoplastic composites, Covestro plans to present a particle foam derived from expanded polycarbonate (EPC). This material is recyclable and can be used in high-quality lightweight construction applications.

Continental has announced plans to build a factory in New Braunfels, Texas. The new plant will help the German technology company to expand its capacity to produce radar sensors.

 

Continental, a market leader in the field of advanced driver assistance systems plans to break ground for the plant which will cover 20,000 square meters by mid-2020. The company plans to invest USD 110 million over the next three years in the factory which will make advanced driver assistance systems which will have components like radar sensors from 2021. Such systems save lives and can make vehicles significantly safer. Continental hopes to benefit from the steadily increasing fitment rates of such systems in new vehicles.

 

Frank Jourdan, member of the Continental executive board responsible for autonomous mobility safety said that Continental has plans to make further investments in the high triple-digit million euro range in the areas of assisted and automated driving over the next five years. According to him, the capacity expansion in New Braunfels is part of Continental’s growth strategy. Continental has its very own  development centers and production sites in Europe, the US and Asia to offer customized solutions for customers.

Karl Haupt, head of the advanced driver assistance systems business unit, said, “Customer proximity in the individual regions is of paramount importance to us. The new plant in New Braunfels will provide us with a state-of-the-art production facility for our high-tech products, enabling us to continue our growth strategy.”

Currently, Continental has a workforce of 450 employees at the company’s Automotive Systems Plant in Seguin, Texas, and the new factory will add 130 new jobs in the region.

Some automotive manufacturers in the US use Continental’s radar sensors for technologies like adaptive cruise control and emergency brake assist. Some of the specific technologies that are in demand in the US market include blind-spot monitoring for passenger cars with trailers.

In addition to New Braunfels, Continental is also represented in the other Continental offices in the United States dedicated to the development of ADAS sensors include Auburn Hills near Detroit and Santa Barbara, California, where the company develops Lidar technologies.

Arlanxeo, a leading player in the field of performance elastomers plans to showcase the latest developments they have made related to high-performance tire solutions at the 2020 edition of the Tire Technology Expo which is scheduled to be held from February 25 to February 27 in Hanover, Germany.

Zenuity, a leading developer of software for self-driving and assisted driving cars, has opted to work with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) for sourcing the crucial artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure that it needs for the design and development of advanced autonomous driving (AD) systems.

Zenuity is a joint venture company that was formed by Volvo Cars (VCC) and Veoneer, two Swedish companies who are known for their innovations related to automotive safety. Zenuity specializes in the creation of platforms that are meant to deliver world-class performance in autonomous driving while at all times meeting stringent real-world safety benchmarks.

As part of the collaboration between Zenuity and HPE, HPE will provide Zenuity with core data processing services. These services will make it possible for to obtain, store, organize and analyze the data that it generates across the world from its network of test vehicles and software development centers. The end-to-end IT infrastructure will be delivered as-a-Service through HPE GreenLake.

Commenting on the collaboration, Dennis Nobelius, Zenuity’s chief executive said that HPE’s solutions were the crucial building blocks for the development of the autonomous driving cars of the future. He added that HPE would be providing Zenuity with the foundations upon which everything else is built.

“The paradigm shift we’ve seen in the past few years has been remarkable, with autonomous vehicles presenting the biggest opportunity we’ve seen in decades to disrupt and revolutionize the automotive industry. To meet this challenge, optimizing the convergence of HPC, data analytics and artificial intelligence is vital,” said Antonio Neri, Chief Executive Officer, HPE.

Neri continued that creating an ecosystem that supports this convergence, coupled with matching infrastructure across edge computing, storage, compute and services is vital as Zenuity tries to emerge as one of the frontrunners in this change,.

Neri concluded, “This kind of partnership will provide Zenuity with the innovation and flexibility to adapt as it grows and is exactly why we’re committed to offering everything as-a-Service to our customer.”

The service is powered by HPC technologies which are built specifically for this purpose: HPE Apollo systems, HPE ProLiant servers, and a high performance parallel Lustre file based storage solution. These techmologies would be delivered through the as-a-Service HPE GreenLake offering. HPE Pointnext Services will manage the solution, with the outcome being environment that would support Zenuity’s developers as they test, learn and validate new generations of the company’s flagship AD software.

“While many of those trying to be first to market in the AD industry are moving at pace towards deployment, our focus is on delivering solutions that are the most safe to market. Building our real-life safety benchmark is part of this goal and relies on our ability to deliver a world-leading software stack built upon reliable infrastructure,” said  Nobelius.

The plan is to commence deployment this summer. Initially, the AD software will be launched in Sweden, and will be shortly launched in other markets across the globe.

In an all-stock deal that would bring together two leading automotive parts manufacturer, BorgWarner will acquire Delphi Technologies Plc. The deal would give both companies an advantage in terms of transition to an era where electric and hybrid vehicles will become more common on the roads.

 

Based on the terms of the deal, Delphi Technologies has been valued USD 3.3 billion, a figure that is inclusive of debt. The engine and transmission businesses of both the companies are expected to experience a major downturn with many car manufacturers consolidating and focusing more on electrified models. Automotive suppliers have been forced to invest heavily in products that car manufacturers will need for the manufacture of hybrid models that use both gasoline engines and battery power, as well as fully electric vehicles.

 

Before the deal was announced, Chris McNally, an analyst with Evercore ISI, said that it could mark the beginning of powertrain consolidation, which is coming out of necessity. He added that all the suppliers are dealing with lower global volumes combined with the transition toward electric vehicles, which calls for heavy investment.

 

Terms of the Deal

Shareholders of Delphi Technologies will receive 0.4534 BorgWarner shares for each share of Delphi Technologies that they hold. As an outcome of the deal, the shareholders of BorgWarner would have a share of 84 percent in the combined company, while current shareholders of Delphi Technologies would hold the balance 16 percent. The companies said that they expect to save costs to the tune of about USD 125 million by 2023 as a result of the deal.

 

BorgWarner’s acquisition of Delphi Technologies is the biggest such deal the company has made recently. Back in 2015, the company had acquired Remy International Inc. for about USD 950 million. The company supplies components to leading automotive companies like Ford and Volkswagen while Delphi’s customers include General motors and Daimler AG. Delphi was spun off by General Motors as a separate company and was then the biggest manufacturer of automotive components in the world. Then, in 2017, Delphi Technologies, which is based in Gillingham, England, was one of the two companies which was split from Delphi Automotive. The company deals with the supply of engine and transmission parts. The second company to be split from Delphi Automotive was Aptiv Plc, which focuses on technology for the cars of the future like advanced safety systems and self-driving car software.

Oracle Lighting, a leading company in the field of innovative LED lighting solutions for the automotive aftermarket, has launched itss new Jeep Wrangler JL Cargo LED Light Module (p/n 5858-023). The new LED light modules are designed for 2018-2020 Jeep Wrangler JL models.

 

Commenting on the new product, Justin Hartenstein, Oracle Lighting director of development said that the factory fitted LED dome light in a Jeep fails to provide illumination for the rear cargo area, and this makes it difficult to see at night when accessing cargo. The new Oracle Cargo LED Light Module rectifies this easily by providing bright LED light to the rear hatch area using an existing power source. The unit features a plug-and-play design that makes it easy to just replace the factory wiper motor cover with the new cover using the included parts. The adapter can then be plugged into the rear accessory socket.

 

Turning the Cargo LED Light Module on and off is easy with the flush switches located on the panel. The dual white LED Cargo light function not only provides plenty of illumination but also serves as an emergency flasher that would be useful in the evet of an emergency with its additional amber flashing lights.

 

One main advantage of the Oracle LED light module’s design is that it was specifically designed to completely replace the factory wiper cover. Unlike other aftermarket options, this molded part features LED lights that are seamlessly integrated into the module for a factory fitted appearance look rather than “stuck-on” LED lights.

 

Oracle Lighting, which is based in LA had celebrated its 20-year anniversary in 2019. The company  specializes in the design of innovative lighting products and technologies for the automotive/12Volt, powersports, motorcycle, and marine markets.

Consumers in the Middle East market are known for their love for big cars and big engines, but Chevrolet is working on changing this outlook with its range of turbocharged engines that are offered across its vehicle range. These engines are small in size and consume little fuel but are highly powerful. They ramp up the power and offer just the right mix of efficiency and performance. The Chevrolet Equinox crossover and Malibu sedan offer these modern, newly designed force-fed units in varying capacities.

 

An engine that is turbocharged offers optimal efficiency. In such an engine, exhaust gases, which would have been otherwise wasted are used to spin a turbine. The turbine then pushes more air into the cylinders to deliver more power while consuming less fuel.

 

The Malibu’s all new 1.5L I-4 turbocharged engine, delivers an impressive 163 horsepower and 250Nm of torque at 2,500 to 5,000 RPM. Running on a full tank, which is about 62 liters, the Malibu can provide users with a driving range of up to 1,000km. This translates to a fuel economy of 16.7Km/L, which is  amongst the best in its class. The 2.0L engine, available in the Chevrolet Malibu LT 250HP and Premier 250HP, works in tandem with a six-speed automatic gearbox to deliver a great ride while also providing fuel efficiency of 14.2 Km/L. This is the equivalent of a driving range of 880 Km on a full tank. In its highest state of tune, the unit produces over 250 horsepower.

 

In the Equinox Premier, the 2.0L engine has been tuned to deliver 252 horsepower and 352 Nm of torque  so that motorists benefit from outstanding performance and quick acceleration. Tuning the engine makes the Equinox the perfect city vehicle giving it enough reserves of power for overtaking safely and merging with fast moving traffic.

 

For further improving the performance, the engine is paired with a modern nine-speed transmission that makes it possible for the turbocharged unit to operate in its optimum revs. It also improves the fuel efficiency to just 13.6 Km/L. Thus the Equinox is able to provide motorists with great performance while keeping operating costs low by using less fuel.

 

General Motors’ highly efficient 1.5L I4 turbocharged engine can be used for even better fuel economy of 15Km/L in the Equinox. In this case, the engine is paired with the company’s six-speed transmission and has an output of 170 horsepower, which is almost equivalent to the power delivered by a much bigger 2.4L naturally aspirated engine.

 

Chevrolet has leveraged its state-of-the-art technology Chevrolet to deliver on its performance promise  while managing to keep fuel consumption low. Thus, Chevrolet’s range of turbocharged engines offer the best of both worlds.

The recent spell of rainy weather in the UAE has fazed many motorists who are not used to driving in such conditions. ACDelco has shared some tips to ensure that motorists are able to keep themselves and their loved ones safe on the roads.

  1. Be prepared: The most important precaution to take is to ensure that the vehicle is in the best possible condition to tackle such stormy conditions. The components that need a comprehensive check before you start on a journey are the wiper blades and the front and rear lights. Just checking that these are working fine can make a huge difference to how comfortable and safe you are once you are on the move.

 

  1. Check your weather app: Before you start the engine, check on the expected weather condition so that you are more prepared for what you are likely to face. Updates are given on a regular basis through news channels and on weather apps about road and weather conditions.

 

  1. Don’t drive with your hazards on: Some motorists make it a regular practice to drive in fog and rain with the hazard lights on. The UAE has now issued a law that prohibits this practice as other road users will not be able to differentiate if the motorist is using the signal to indicate lane change or as a hazard light. This can lead to unnecessary confusion and greater risk of accidents. Hazard lights should be used only in an emergency situation.

 

  1. Use dip lights, not high beams: There is a popular belief that high beams are better when visibility is poor. This is not true as small water droplets reflect the light and distort visibility for the motorist and other drivers. Instead, it would be better to use dip lights to guide the way.

 

  1. Stay in your lane: Changing lanes is risky in bad weather as visibility is low and conditions are poor. It is best to stay in one lane unless you absolutely need to change lanes. Even when you do have to change lanes, give other motorists plenty of warning by using the indicator lights ad check thoroughly for other cars in the nearby lanes.

 

  1. Keep your distance: During this kind of weather, it is very important to always keep a safe distance from the car in front. Motorists should be highly aware of their surroundings and other vehicles on the road, both in front and behind them.

 

  1. Listen up: IN the event that visibility is badly affected during stormy weather, motorists should sharpen their ears and use what they hear to compensate for the lack of visibility. They could roll down their windows to hear other cars or emergency sirens.

 

  1. Slow Down! Speed and wet roads are not a good combination at all. While driving, motorists should match the speed of the car in front to ensure that they are not forced to brake sharply. They should allow themselves plenty of time to get to their destination as there are bound to be delays and congestion on the roads!
