The naturally aspirated four-liter engine of the 718 Cayman GT4 produces 309 kW / 420 hp in stock configuration. The FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR engineers spotted potential for teasing some more horsepower from the boxer engine on the exhaust side. The tuning has a modular design and starts with FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR rear mufflers featuring actively controlled exhaust flaps. They come with EC component type approval and allow choosing between a subdued and a decidedly sporty exhaust note. The mufflers can be combined with the production tailpipes or with the FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR exhaust pipes, which measure 100 millimeters in diameter and combine stainless steel and carbon in various colors.

 

In order to let the GT4 engine breathe out even more freely and generate even more extra power as a result, FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR developed two additional upgrades for the exhaust system. Precision-designed and manufactured stainless headers replace the production components on both sides of the engine. They can be ordered with high-efficiency thermal insulation, as can the 200-cell metal catalysts. The complete FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR high-performance exhaust system saves 12 kilograms in weight over the stock system and boosts peak power of the engine by 25.8 kW / 35 hp while producing about 30 Nm more torque.

 

The mid-engined racer is even more dynamic with around 455 horsepower under the hood.  From rest, the tuned coupe takes only 4.1 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h. Just ten seconds later, the two-seater is already traveling at 200 km/h. The top speed is north of 305 km/h.

 

Of course, the aerodynamics also play an elementary role in these speed ranges. For this reason FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR developed naked-carbon components that underscore the racing looks and thanks to their sophisticated shape further reduce lift at the front and rear axle. The refinement specialist produces all bodywork components from this hi-tech composite material in its own Manufaktur craft production facility.

 

The three-piece FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR front spoiler, which juts out further than the production component, gives the 718 Cayman GT4 a markedly sporty facelift and optimizes the handling stability at high speeds to boot. Two spoiler flaps mounted on each side above the carbon air outlets ahead of the front wheel wells add further aerodynamic finishing touches.

 

The carbon covers for the large side intakes in the front fascia optimize the airflow to the radiators and front brakes. The FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR carbon trim on top of the front bumper provides yet another sporty visual upgrade.

 

The FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR rocker panels route the air past the rear wheel arches with as little turbulence as possible and visually give the GT4 an even lower stance.

 

The strong suit of the carbon mirror covers and the triangular covers behind them is their attractive design, while the FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR airbox cowls for the air intakes in the rear quarter panels magnify the motor racing looks. What is more: They optimize the supply of fresh air to the engine as well.

 

The German automotive refinement specialist also does some aerodynamic fine-tuning at the rear. It fits the rear wing of the GT4 with carbon sides that have a lower edge and with a carbon Gurney flap, which serves as a trailing edge on the wing profile and produces more downforce at high speeds.

 

FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR modifies the rear fascia as well. The production centerpiece is replaced by an aerodynamically efficient carbon diffuser fitted with cutouts for the two stainless/carbon tailpipes of the exhaust system. It also has vertical diffuser fins, which channel the airflow precisely and thereby ensure additional rear-axle downforce. Carbon components on either side join the diffuser to the wheels arches on the left and right.

 

The spectacular looks of the FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR bodywork refit is rounded off by tailor-made alloys with delicate ten-spoke design. Opting for front wheels of size 8.5Jx20 and 11Jx21 rims on the rear axle gives even more emphasis to the wedge shape of the sports car. FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR chose tires of sizes 235/35 ZR 20 and 295/25 ZR 21 as the optimal solution.

 

In addition, FRIEDRICH PERFORMANCE MANUFAKTUR offers three different coilover suspensions for lowering the ride height of the two-door by up to 45 millimeters while also firming up the damping. There is also a variant designed specifically for use on the racetrack, which allows tailoring not only the vehicle ride height, but also the compression and rebound stages of the damping precisely to the driver’s wishes. Special strut mounds ensure even more direct handling.

E-Mobility India Forum powered by NGV India Summit, is gearing up for its second edition on 29 – 30 September 2022 at Le Meridien, New Delhi. With the aim of optimizing the ecological footprint of its products and, in the long term, designing them to be CO2-neutral throughout their entire life cycle, Vitesco Technologies, a leading supplier of advanced drive technologies and electrification solutions, is intensively looking into the so-called Life Cycle Engineering (LCE).

Life cycle engineering (LCE) means that when designing and developing a product, the ecological footprint of the entire value chain is taken into account – from the extraction of raw materials for supplied parts, through their production and transport, to the use of the finished product and its recycling at the end of its life – in order to optimize these aspects using scientific methods.

“As a provider of climate-friendly mobility solutions we are committed to meeting high standards in terms of sustainability,” explains Anja Rivera de la Cruz, head of Sustainability at Vitesco Technologies: “Our business model is based on the understanding that we are significantly reducing vehicle CO2 emissions with our products. Our goal is to make our production operations up to 100 percent neutral by 2030 and all our business processes along the value chain completely CO2 neutral by 2040 at the latest. To do this, we want to create a life cycle assessment (LCA) for all new product groups – as our customers, OEMs from all over the world, are increasingly asking for.” This will enable the company to analyze and make transparent how its products affect the climate over their entire life cycle.

Vitesco Technologies also contributes its expertise to the “Umwelt Produkt” working group of the Verband der Deutschen Automobilindustrie (association of the German automotive industry), and to several initiatives of the CLEPA regarding life cycle assessments. The company’s expertise is in high demand from automotive manufacturers

companies. “Only when you know the CO2 footprint of your own actions or a product, you can also implement suitable measures or select materials to reduce its environmental impact. We can take advantage from years of experience, extensive databases and highly specialized tools,” explains Khosrau Heidary, head of Life Cycle Engineering at Vitesco Technologies.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Martin from the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg and the Fraunhofer IIS, a proven expert in life cycle engineering, considers the company a pioneer when it comes to automating life cycle assessments: “Vitesco Technologies has developed very innovative, scientifically sound concepts in many areas that are unparalleled in the industry. Almost all major companies are working on this topic and are currently in the analysis phase. Vitesco Technologies has already completed that phase and is taking a pioneering role in the supplier industry by implementing life cycle engineering in its corporate processes.”

As long as a product consists of several components, countless possibilities arise for its development and assembly. These include different design methods, materials, suppliers, supply routes and manufacturing methods, as Heidary explains: “We use mathematical methods to determine which combination can optimize the environmental footprint of a product. On this basis, we in the Life Cycle Engineering team, develop an environmentally optimized product – with consistently high quality and the lowest possible costs.”

The pilot project for this initiative at Vitesco Technologies was the life cycle assessment of a high-voltage inverter – a particularly complex product with many components that are also used in other areas of electric vehicles. For this alone, around 400 individual components and all steps in the value chain were collected and analyzed. The method, with which life cycle assessments can be mathematically optimized in an automated manner, was developed in cooperation with the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Following the successful pilot phase, this method is now being introduced in development, production, and business processes as part of the life cycle engineering program.

Car manufacturers’ price lists often feature a complicated structure that makes them
difficult to understand. It is increasingly common for manufacturers to only make
certain optional extras available in combination with other special features or as part
of packages. In the case of the current Audi RS 6, for example, customers looking for
a black Alcantara headliner were originally forced – for no apparent reason – to
purchase this extra together with a Bang & Olufsen advanced sound system for a
mere €6,000. This situation has since improved somewhat, as customers now have
the choice of combining it with the Bang & Olufsen premium sound system priced at
“just” €770. However, that does nothing to help the owner of the high-performance
wagon shown here, who was not prepared to part with around €8,000 for the
Alcantara headliner he wanted when he bought the vehicle.

All the same, he did not want to go without a refined roof liner – so he took his RS 6
Avant to PS-Sattlerei in Bergkamen in Germany’s Ruhr region. The interior specialists
implemented extensive upgrades to the passenger compartment in fine Alcantara.
Naturally, the suede used in the upgrade pairs so perfectly with the fabrics originally
used by Audi that even connoisseurs would be unable to distinguish between the
Alcantara surfaces installed in the factory and the newly added areas – exactly as it
should be!
Of course, the PS-Sattlerei team didn’t stop with the customer’s initial request for a
black Alcantara roof lining and instead extended the upgrade to the sun visors and
roof pillars. After all, the RS 6 is an absolutely top-of-the-range model with a six-figure
base price. Despite this, there are still some elements inside the 600 hp sports wagon
that are made from crude plastic – and therefore fail to live up to the Audi’s
sophisticated standards. To rectify this, PS-Sattlerei lined all of these areas in original
black Audi Alcantara, detailed with red decorative stitching.
Upgrading the steering wheel was an obvious place to start. The popular microfiber
material was also applied to the trim around the steering column, door sills and the
dashboard. When it came to the dashboard, the PS-Sattlerei specialists applied
Alcantara not only to the upper section but also to the glove compartment door and
the side covers. And, last but not least, the upgrades also honed in on the Audi’s
center console. Its side panels and the armrest are now also adorned with black
Alcantara and red decorative stitching.
All in all, the interior of this RS 6 Avant is now significantly more refined and premiumquality that it was upon leaving the Audi factory. There is not a single part of the car
that is anything other than beautiful to look at – and classy Alcantara stretches almost
wherever you look.

Variohm EuroSensor has launched a new tension/compression gear shift sensor for clutch-free, flat shift, ignition cut and other gearshift applications in professional motorsports. The VGS-T-1000-M8 (1UAB04) combines strain gauge and integrated digital amplifier technologies to provide an analogue voltage output corresponding to typical motorsports ECU threshold values set between 2.5V DC for zero force and 0…5V DC for +/- 1000N force. Facilitating high speed gear engagement during maximum acceleration with no lost traction, the gear shift sensor also offers advantages over other shifting systems by removing the need for a torque converter and reducing fuel consumption.

Aimed at professional motorsports series such as WRC, S2000, Moto GP, etc., the IP65 rated sensor’s robust and durable design includes a stainless-steel housing with two M8 mounting threads and a 15 mm diameter anodised aluminium sleeve protecting the sensor electronics. With excellent resistance to shock and vibration, the unit has an accuracy to within +/- 5 N over a temperature range of -20 to +85 °C. Overload protection is rated at +/- 5000 N whilst zero force offset at 2.5 V output is specified to within +/- 0.025 V, and gain drift with temperature is 0.2%. The sensor’s supply voltage and current rating is 6 to 16V DC at 18 mA and electrical connection is via a 1-metre-long braided cable assembly.

Monolith, an AI software platform used by the world’s leading automotive, aerospace and industrial engineering teams from Siemens to Honeywell, announced today that engineering teams at the BMW Group, the world’s leading premium manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles, are using its software to accelerate the development of their world-class vehicles. By training Monolith self-learning models with the company’s valuable engineering test data, engineers can now use AI to solve previously impossible physics challenges and instantly predict the performance of highly complex systems like crash and aerodynamics tests.

The BMW Group crash test engineering team began working with Monolith in 2019 via the BMW Startup Garage to explore the potential of using AI to predict the force on a passenger’s tibia during a crash. Current crash development uses 1000s of simulations as well as physical tests to capture performance. Even with sophisticated modelling, owing to the complexity of the physics underpinning crash dynamics, results require substantial engineering know-how to calibrate for real world behaviour. Moreover, physical crash tests can only be conducted in later stages of development when the design is mature enough to create physical prototypes. Exploring a more efficient solution, the BMW Group collaborated with Monolith to see if AI could predict crash performance and importantly, substantially earlier in the vehicle development process. The BMW Startup Garage, BMW Group’s venture client unit, facilitated this collaboration and helped Monolith grow its business relations with the premium automotive manufacturer.

Using Monolith, BMW Group engineers built self-learning models using the wealth of their existing crash data and were able to accurately predict the force on the tibia for a range of different crash types without doing physical crashes. Moreover, the accuracy of the self-learning models will continue to improve as more data becomes available and the platform is further embedded into the engineering workflow. This game-changing approach now means engineers can optimise crash performance earlier in the design process and reduce dependence on time-intensive, costly testing whilst making historical data infinitely more valuable.

“When the intractable physics of a complex vehicle system means it can’t be truly solved via simulation, AI and self-learning models can fill the gap to instantly understand and predict vehicle performance. This offers engineers a tremendous new tool to do less testing and more learning from their data by reducing the number of required simulations and physical tests while critically making existing data more valuable,” said Dr Richard Ahlfeld, CEO and Founder, Monolith. “We are excited to see how BMW Group engineers are using pioneering technologies like Monolith to reduce the cost and time of product development as they develop the next generation of premium vehicles.”

The Monolith platform has been developed with a laser focus on user experience by automotive experts and data scientists to ensure seamless integration with existing engineering processes. As a result, as soon as the software is implemented, domain experts quickly begin gaining valuable insights and time back, as well as the chance to explore an even wider design space.

“What’s perhaps even more exciting than the promise of accelerating the vehicle development process is the opportunity for engineers to explore more design parameters and find new relationships between operating conditions without the need for data science support. The highest quality Catch Can line-up on the market is growing!
After the 0.5 and 1L variants, there is now also the super compact 0.25L Competition Oil
Catch Can from Nuke Performance.
Significantly smaller, but at just as powerful, the new 0.25L version is perfect for smaller
engines or engines with lower crankcase pressure. Of course it also profits from Nuke’s unique
filtration concept that is still unmatched by any competitor.
The sleek, high-quality design also allows it to integrate into any engine bay, no matter how
small, without being prominently eye-catching.
What does an oil catch can do? It reduces the oil in the intake air to the absolute minimum –
which prevents engine knocking and powerloss.
Why this is especially important for a performance upgrade?
The increased combustion pressure also increases crankcase pressure and oil content in the
crankcase ventilation. This air is usually fed directly into the intake manifold from the factory
via a hose.
An oil catch can replaces this hose, binds („catches“) the oil and keeps it away from the
combustion process.

Continental has developed a brand-new premium surface
material: Benova Eco Protect. Its advantages: It makes vehicle interiors more sustainable, durable,
and comfortable at the same time. The surface material is currently being manufactured in
Germany. Further production capacities will be made available at Continental’s American plant in
Winchester, Virginia.
“Whether on the instrument panel, door panel, side or center console, seat cover or headrest –
wherever Benova Eco Protect is used, it impresses with its particularly soft feel and exceptional
value appeal combined with outstanding aging resistance and fastness to light,” says Christian
Noell, Global Head of Segment Automotive for the surface specialist. “Due to its excellent heat and
UV resistance, the material also withstands special environmental influences in the vehicle
compartment. This makes it particularly durable.” Thanks to the choice of suitable base materials
and the optimal interaction of the entire construction, even prolonged heat of 120°C cannot harm
Benova Eco Protect. In addition, these properties enable new interior design trends through the
use of bright colors on demanding surfaces.
Good eco-balance
“On the road to sustainable vehicle interiors, Benova Eco Protect is an important milestone in the
product development,” emphasizes Gabriele Wittmann, Global Director Research at Continental.
“By consistently avoiding any critical ingredients, plasticizers and solvents, the material is
particularly low in emissions and odors and has a low Product Carbon Footprint.” The material of
Continental meets the requirements of all OEM-specific substance prohibition and declaration lists,
of the GADSL (Global Automotive Declarable Substance List), and the EU Chemicals Regulation
REACh.

Benova Eco Protect also offers a weight advantage of about 20 percent and is free of materials of
animal origin. In addition, the resource-conserving and energy-efficient production process make a
positive contribution to the eco-balance of the entire vehicle. For example, no solvents are
evaporated during the drying process, eliminating the need for after-treatment of exhaust gases.
Benova Eco Protect has a thickness of 0.9 mm to 4.3 mm, its material backing consists of textile,
polyurethane foam, sandwich foam or spacer fabric.
Winner of German Innovation Award
The commitment to product development of Benova Eco Protect has paid off: In recognition of its
high degree of innovation the German Design Council has appointed the material “Winner” in the
“Excellence in Business to Business” class in the Materials & Surfaces category out of 640 entries.
The German Innovation Award honors solutions that make our lives better and contribute to a
better future. In this competition, Benova Eco Protect impressed the jury with its innovative
properties.
The German Innovation Award has been presented since 1953 by the German Design Council as
the world’s leading competence center for communication and knowledge transfer in the field of
design, brand and innovation. It honors innovative achievements from a wide range of industries
that break new ground through their added value. The focus is on the user experience.

Steering systems from NSK centre on innovative products such as lightweight and compact
electric power steering (EPS), manual steering columns with adjustment capability and
effective energy absorption features, and lightweight joints and shafts offering numerous
integrated functions.
With the signed MoU, both companies agree on a non-binding assessment phase of the
relevant businesses without any preconceived outcomes. A decision on a possible
cooperation model will be taken by the end of the year.
