For over a hundred years, the OSRAM brand has been a leader in the automotive lighting industry, supplying its products to the first assembly and aftermarket. It also creates trends and implements innovative solutions. And this fall, it will expand its offer with a completely new range – many useful car accessories.

Take care of your tires …

The TYREinflate compressor family are handy, light and compact devices, convenient for storage and transport. Depending on their needs, customers can choose from three different products. The simplest of them, the TYREinflate 200 model, has an analog pressure gauge, the TYREinflate 450 version is a device with a digital display that increases accuracy and facilitates reading the result. After reaching the right pressure, thanks to the built-in auto-stop function, the compressor stops pumping by itself and remembers the set value for the next use. TYREinflate 1000 is able to inflate the tire in 2 minutes, and the large digital display with inflation indicator allows you to follow the progress of work. OSRAM compressors can also inflate motorcycle, bicycle, trailer and even trolley tires.

Battery…

The OSRAM BatteryCharge – family of chargers consists of three devices – OEBCS 904, 906 and 908. They can charge 12 V batteries with a capacity of up to 170 Ah, as well as 24 V batteries up to 70 Ah (model 908). As a few on the market, OSRAM smart chargers charge all types of batteries, including lithium-ion. BatteryCharge devices have backup functions that help to protect the battery from discharging in winter or during longer stops. The chargers have a clear LCD display with backlight, and all functions can be operated with just one button. The devices also have protection that prevents damage to the electrical system against the effects of reverse connection.

When the battery is discharged and we want to start the car quickly, OSRAM devices from the BatteryStart series will come to the rescue. There are four models of jump starters to choose from – OBSL 200, 300, 400 and Pro 700. The latter, due to its large dimensions and possibilities, is intended mainly for car repair shops or breakdown vehicles. The others are small and can easily fit in the trunk, glove compartment or door pocket. The Pro 700 model will easily start gasoline engines with a capacity of up to 8 liters and diesel engines up to 6 liters. Just leave the device connected for 60 seconds for the booster to recharge to its initial state. It can also be charged from a 230 V socket. OSRAM starters are – similarly to rectifiers – protected against connecting the poles in reverse.

and clean air in the car

The current situation related to the pandemic in the world has directed our needs to completely different areas than before. In order to protect ourselves and our loved ones, we are looking for products that will protect us against harmful external factors. The answer to these needs is the portable LED air purifier from OSRAM – AirZing MiniTM.

The device sucks in air, which is passed through a titanium dioxide filter, irradiated with LEDs emitting UV-A radiation. This removes up to 99%* of all harmful viruses and bacteria. Unlike air purifiers with HEPA or carbon filters, the filter on the AirZing MiniTM is simply rinsed under clean water. Convenient mounting and USB-C power mode make the product extremely practical and easy to use.

Headlights are hardly the first thing on the minds of car owners. In fact, they’re only really a consideration after they’ve burnt out. But when you consider that an estimated 1.3 million people are killed on the world’s roads each year,* could we all be doing more to change this dangerous behavior?

That’s exactly what OSRAM are aiming to achieve with their new campaign:

If it’s not bright. It‘s not right.

Anyone who works in automotive repairs will probably have at least a dozen stories about customers who insisted on the cheap quick-fix instead of spending a few extra bucks to do a proper job. Convincing customers that broken headlights could be a safety risk is no easy task, but OSRAM’s three “facts of light” can help educate motorists and build trust within the industry.

  1. Check and change

Standard halogen headlights will typically lose 30% of their brightness after 500 hours of use. As a result, the distance you can see at night decreases and the clarity of the world around you gets dimmer. This is not only dangerous, it can also lead to a penalty if a headlamp fails while driving. It’s extremely important that your customers get their lights checked regularly and change them proactively when they become too dim. OSRAM recommends replacing lamps every 2-3 years.

  1. Change in pairs

Replacing just one failed lamp can result in an unbalanced or unpredictable headlight beam that can cause serious hazards for the driver and those on the road around them. And because both lights are subject to the same stresses, if one goes, you can be sure that the other isn’t far behind. Changing both headlamps not only improves visibility, it saves everyone time and increases sales on parts.

  1. Upgrade your vision

With many advanced lighting solutions available, even for older models, changing a car’s headlights is an opportunity to take advantage of OSRAM’s vast array of innovative car lighting technology. Fitting a higher performance OSRAM lamp such as LED, Xenon or Halogen lights can provide brighter intensity with lower energy consumption, while giving your vehicle a more modern look.

More than just a bright idea

Surveys indicate that the majority of motorists rely strongly on the advice of workshops when selecting new parts. Taking the time to explain the importance of quality lighting is good for motorists and good for business. It helps build trust by demonstrating expertise, while also showing genuine concern for customer safety. Replacing lights regularly and in pairs means that customers are better equipped on the roads while boosting sales for retailers. If ever there was a win-win situation, this is it.

OSRAM believes that the automotive repair industry not only has the power to change motorists’ behavior, but a responsibility to do so. Don’t wait for customers to ask, let them know that if it’s not bright, it’s not right.

With Delphi Technologies’ new OE ignition coils for Mercedes applications, garages can now offer a high- quality, competitively priced ignition repair for a growing fleet of high-performance vehicles. Featuring the company’s multi-charge technology, the system delivers multiple sparks and increased spark energy for fewer emissions, up to 20 percent better fuel economy and improved engine performance.

To meet the growing aftermarket demand, Delphi Technologies, a leading global supplier of advanced ignition systems, is launching two new OE ignition coils, featuring its proven multi-charge technology. Fitted to popular Mercedes applications, more than 14 million coils have been produced so far. And with OE business committed through the next decade, this represents a significant and growing opportunity for both distributors and garages.
“By making this innovative technology available in the independent aftermarket, garages can now offer their customers a competitive and guaranteed quality ignition repair. As well as the immediate business on offer, this provides garages with an opportunity to tie in a high-value, growing fleet of vehicles, that will need high- value repairs throughout their lifetime,” comments Jean-Francois Bouveyron, vice president, Delphi Technologies Aftermarket – EMEA.
Delphi Technologies’ OE ignition coils are fitted to more than 150 Mercedes models including A220, C180, C200, E200, GLA200 and Vito. The latest additions take the company’s ignition range to more than 500 part numbers, covering nearly 9,000 applications (make/model/engine size) and a total parc of 114 million vehicles, making it one of or the most comprehensive in the industry.
Improved fuel economy of up to 20 percent
With Delphi Technologies’ multi-charge ignition, the initial spark is followed by several additional sparks to ignite the fuel-air mixture under challenging operating conditions, such as high exhaust gas recirculation levels and lean fuel mixtures. The very-fast, consecutive spark events allow ignition to occur at the desired spark timing. This results in optimal combustion and helps achieve significantly improved fuel economy – up to 20 percent – and reduced emissions in GDi engines, compared with competitor time-controlled multi spark  ignition systems.

Vitesco Technologies, a leading international supplier of modern drive technologies and electrification solutions, has won a major order with a sales volume in a triple-digit million Euro amount for an innovative high-voltage component. For the first time ever, the company will be supplying an 800-volt inverter with silicon carbide technology in significant quantities for the new electric vehicle platform of the Hyundai Motor Group. “This partnership demonstrates once again that Vitesco Technologies meets the highest requirements with innovative key components for electric vehicles. In this way, our company is contributing toward making the electric mobility of the future even more efficient, convenient and thus also more sustainable,” says Thomas Stierle, Executive Vice President Electrification Technology business unit at Vitesco Technologies.
Up until now, most electric vehicles have used a voltage of 400-volts for the drive. Only a few battery-powered premium models and sports cars have an 800-volt architecture. The E-GMP electric car platform from the Hyundai Motor Group, which was presented just a few weeks ago, also works at a voltage of 800-volt. This brings several advantages for drivers of electric vehicles: For example, the doubled voltage significantly shortens the battery’s charging time. Depending on capacity, it should be possible to charge the battery to 80 percent in less than twenty minutes, depending on battery capacity. In addition, the 800-volt electrical system enables a higher power output. It also significantly improves the efficiency of the electric drive.

Eleven new electric models with 800-volt technology by 2025
Vitesco Technologies uses semiconductors made from silicon carbide for the 800-volt inverter, which significantly increase the efficiency. This technology is the only way to harvest the full potential of the high-voltage architecture while at the same time providing maximum efficiency.
Based on the E-GMP platform, the Hyundai Motor Group is planning a total of 23 models by 2025, including 11 battery-powered electric vehicles with 800-volt technology. The first vehicle model from the Hyundai Motor Group based on the new E-GMP platform is the Ioniq 5 electric SUV.
For Vitesco Technologies, the major order for the 800-volt inverter is confirmation of the electrification strategy that it has been pursuing up until now and underlines the pioneering approach as a supplier of choice for e-mobility solutions. The company is therefore pushing ahead with the development and optimization of other central components for electric vehicles based on 800 volts – from DC/DC converters to battery management right through to charging systems.

On an annual basis, TME takes a look back at the performance of its suppliers over the previous financial year. The Certificate of Recognition in the Supply category, for instance, supports the company’s aim to ensure every Toyota customer is entirely satisfied with his or her vehicle. TME recognises the vital role of suppliers in the mutual quest to achieve continuous improvement.
KPIs (key performance indicators), such as overall delivery performance (including service parts and accessories), form an integral part of the judging process. TME awards 10 suppliers in the Supply category with a Certificate of Recognition, which for 2020 (covering the 2019 financial year period) includes NSK Europe.
The company also secured an Achievement Award in the Quality category; only 3-5 suppliers each year are successful in winning this accolade. Quality represents both the backbone and DNA of TME. Many OEMs use PPM to measure the number of defects that occur in a million parts. Warranty claims and response to quality issues are among further supplier criteria scrutinised for the award.
NSK’s EABU delivers various products to TME’s engine and transmission plants in the UK and Poland. These include ball bearings, tapered roller bearings and rocker arms from NSK manufacturing facilities in Kielce (Poland) and Peterlee (UK), as well as from Saitama and Takasaki in Japan. NSK also delivers wheel bearings to TME car assembly plants in France, Turkey and South Africa, and soon to the Czech Republic.

Al-Futtaim Toyota, part of Al-Futtaim Automotive, in collaboration with UAE government authorities and the Economic Development Department, conducted 21 raids for counterfeit parts during 2020. The raids included checks across retail shops in all seven Emirates, demonstrating the Al-Futtaim company’s and the government’s continued commitment towards customer safety.

The raids resulted in over 300,000 counterfeit parts seized by government officials, at a total worth of AED10.5 million, including 165,375 oil filters. Items confiscated include serviceable goods such as the various filters and spark plugs, which can be difficult for consumers to differentiate from genuine Toyota products.

The nationwide effort included market sweeps where UAE government officials and local Police force removed dangerous fake parts from the market. Fines worth AED 310,000 were issued across the raids.

In an effort to bolster the fight against counterfeit parts, Al-Futtaim Toyota along with TMC’s legal partners conducted ten training programs across the UAE, training more than 400 additional government officials and field inspectors.

Al-Futtaim Toyota has an important role to play in the fight against counterfeit and ensuring customers don’t fall prey to counterfeiters with the potential for fake parts to endanger all road users. Fake parts affect vehicle longevity and failure of any sort when it comes to components like suspension and brakes can lead to serious injury and road fatalities.

Genuine Toyota parts are available at Al-Futtaim Toyota and its reputable authorized dealers. All parts are built to meet the highest quality standards, adding to Toyota’s quality, reliability, and durability.

The Finnish self-driving software company Sensible 4 has been expanding its operations to Norway, one of the leading countries in enabling autonomous vehicles on its roads. In the preparations of bringing Sensible 4 autonomous vehicles abroad, the autonomous driving software needed to be tested for safety. As there is no comprehensive legislation or standardization for self-driving vehicles, VTT performed an independent third-party test of the system. Reliable validation was essential for expanding the operations abroad.

In order for companies like Sensible 4 to continue their development of autonomous vehicles internationally, common and widely approved testing and validation procedures are required between nations.

Early this year Sensible 4 started trials with two open road pilots in Norway, one near Oslo and another one in Gjesdal. To enable these pilots, a driving permit from Vegvesen, the Norwegian road authority, was required. In Finland, VTT has a long history with autonomous machines and testing. Vegvesen relied on VTT’s technical expertise in testing and validation of Sensible 4 autonomous systems.

“Now we need action. Autonomous driving technology requires international testing procedures on public roads. Currently, lack of standardization between countries and often complex and varying driving permit practices are slowing down the innovation”, says Harri Santamala, the CEO of Sensible 4. He continues: “Norway is a good example of a frontline country working on current legislation and enabling future transportation.”

Sensible 4 technology performed safely

The tests that preceded the Norway pilots, including the obstacle detection and avoidance trials, were conducted in Nummela airfield in September 2020. The measurements were carried by using the automated vehicle tools and prototypes developed by VTT for enabling benchmarking the automated driving functions.

“The automated prototype vehicle Martti was utilized as the target vehicle for measuring safety margins and object detection capabilities”, says Matti Kutila, the Research Team Leader at VTT.

The test scenarios created by VTT included reacting to several static and as well as dangerously moving objects in the front of the vehicle. The vehicle’s capabilities for monitoring free space were tested in a T-intersection, at a pedestrian crossing, and while at a bus stop, waiting for other cars to first pass from the rear.

“The generated test protocol provides a basis for future testing and standardization. It allows for extending similar scenario tests and data gathering to further scenarios, environments, and environmental conditions”, Kutila continues.

Sensible 4 technology performed safely in all the tested scenarios. The tests were carried out systematically analyzing the driving scenarios, safety risks and conducting real measurements. The process follows existing standard methods where applicable. However, practical safety validation standards for automated driving do not exist, yet. The tests done in September 2020 contribute to building new methods and a safety testing culture.

Transporter van models such as the Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Iveco Daily and more are manufactured in many different sizes and versions. Despite the countless application areas and industries, however, one area remains mostly untouched by changes and adaptations: the suspension and chassis. When dealing with these important components, vehicle manufacturers usually rely on compromise solutions that satisfy a broad range of people and the maximum possible number of industries and intended uses. Thus the standard suspensions and chassis settings are usually designed for a change between unloaded and fully loaded states. The standard steel springs quickly lose their original resilience when under continuously high loads, as in the case of motorhomes, ambulances, catering trucks, tool trucks and many other vehicles with a heavy interior or vehicle body. Fatigue of the original springs results in decreased spring travel and road clearance. The logical consequence is that the ride comfort and driving safety are tremendously impaired.

For many years Goldschmitt techmobil GmbH, which is headquartered in Höpfingen, Germany, has devoted itself to this very problem and offers retrofittable chassis components as needed. This includes anything from reinforced leaf springs or coil springs for heavy-duty industrial use to complex air suspensions for sensitive rescue and transport operations. For many years, well-known vehicle manufacturers have been relying on the tried-and-tested Goldschmitt technology and have been optimising their tool trucks, municipal vehicles and vending vehicles as well as TV broadcast vehicles, horsebox lorries and motorhomes with spring systems and hydraulic levelling systems from Goldschmitt. Numerous rescue services also have their emergency vehicles equipped with air suspensions or other Goldschmitt technology. After all, the point is to transport severely ill and injured persons gently and safely. But Goldschmitt products stand the test in more than just emergency situations. Transporter vans for persons with disabilities are also frequently equipped with air suspensions. Thanks to the versatile air bellows, the rear end of the vehicle can be lowered as needed. So wheelchairs can be pushed into the vehicle without much effort. Furthermore, due to subsequent installation of a reinforced or additional suspension in conjunction with a wheel/tyre combination with load-bearing capacity, many vehicle models allow for uprating or payload increase. This increases the axle loads or the permitted total weight, thereby increasing the load capacity reserves.

In its more than 40-year company history, the Goldschmitt brand has developed from a small factory into an internationally active company – an innovative chassis specialist and valued development partner for special vehicle, chassis and vehicle body manufacturers that sells its retrofittable chassis products to industrial partners, dealers, workshops and end users in Europe and throughout the world. In addition to numerous Goldschmitt partners who are represented in many parts of Germany and in numerous other countries, Goldschmitt operates three company-owned workshops in Walldürn in the Odenwald, Polch in the Eifel region and Leutkirch in the Allgäu region, which specialise in installing spring and chassis components as well as hydraulic levelling systems. The latter are helpful for levelling out and stably supporting a parked vehicle in a fully automated process. Such systems are in demand, for example, not only for motorhomes, but also for TV broadcast vehicles and other industrial vehicles that absolutely must have stable and level footing.

Goldschmitt has made a name for itself in recent decades, particularly in the motorhome industry, its devoted customers fondly refer to it as a “problem solver” and “chassis doctor”.  As Goldschmitt’s Commercial Director, Markus Siegel, says, “Our customers describe their problems to us and we help with the right medicine, whether they are a manufacturer or end user”.
