The BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK special model impresses not only with its thrilling looks and exclusive equipment features, but above all with high performance in its purest form. The 900 in the model designation reveals that this off-roader is powered by the BRABUS 900 ROCKET V8 twin-turbo, increased-displacement engine. It was designed based on the engine from the G 63 and is fitted with a BRABUS engine cover made of red carbon fiber that makes it a visual treat as well.

The road to an extra 231 kW / 315 hp (310 bhp) over the base engine is the latest example of the BRABUS philosophy of achieving more power through more displacement, a philosophy that has been successful for decades. In this case, the swept volume of the eight-cylinder, four-valve, twin-turbo engine is increased from stock 3,982 cc to 4,407 cc (243 to 269 cu. in.). This is in part achieved by increasing the cylinder bore to 84 millimeters (3.3 in), which BRABUS does in-house with state-of-the-art machinery. The forged BRABUS special pistons are tailored to this larger diameter. Special high-performance piston rods connect them to the precision-balanced billet BRABUS special crankshaft, whose stroke was lengthened to 100 millimeters (3.9 in) to complete the displacement increase. The fuel supply is upgraded accordingly with special high-pressure pumps.

The forced induction system naturally also plays a tremendously important role in the performance increase. The production turbos are replaced with two BRABUS special turbos that have a larger compressor unit and a special core assembly with reinforced axial bearing. They produce a maximum boost pressure of 1.4 bar. Two BRABUS BoostXtra valves generate a thrilling blow-off noise when the driver lifts off the gas.
The BRABUS engineers fitted the exhaust system with larger downpipes with a diameter of 76 millimeters (3 in), metal catalysts and special gasoline particulate filters. The driver can activate a particularly powerful V8 exhaust note in ‘Sport” mode or the subtle “Coming Home” mode at the touch of a button on the center console. As has been the hallmark of a BRABUS sports exhaust system for the G-Model for decades, it again features two tailpipes exiting in front of the rear wheels on each side of the vehicle. They are framed by sporty naked-carbon trim with integrated ROCKET Launch Ambience Light.

The BRABUS engineers and electronics specialists also elaborately calibrated the engine electronics as part of the complex engine upgrade. The new maps for injection, ignition and boost pressure control were created conducting extensive bench tests and test drives. This ensures optimal power delivery, compliance with the stringent emission standards, and flawless durability. BRABUS recommends high-performance lubricants from technology partner MOTUL for the entire powertrain.

The perfect interaction of all components and modifications produces outstanding performance figures. With an output of 662 kW / 900 hp (888 bhp) at a low 6,200 rpm and a gigantic peak torque of 1,250 Nm (922 lb-ft), the enhanced eight-cylinder delivers a superior driving experience. In order to protect the transmission, differentials and half-shafts, the torque is electronically limited to 1,050 Nm (774 lb-ft), which are already on tap at 2,900 rpm.

This results in the BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK delivering the performance of a full-blooded sports car on the road: From rest, the new BRABUS supercar catapults itself to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 3.7 seconds. Depending on equipment and tires, the electronic speed limiter does not kick in below 280 km/h (174 mph).

To do justice to the name of this special model, the bodywork of the BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK is painted black. In addition, the brake calipers, the BRABUS logotypes and all chrome and plastic components were painted black as well

The BRABUS WIDESTAR widebody version for the G-Class also contributes to the spectacular appearance of this supercar. It makes the exclusive off-roader look even more massive and is ten centimeters (4 in) wider than the production car. In addition to the fender flares, this bodywork refit also comprises special fascias at the front and rear to further sharpen the dynamic design. This edition also includes exposed-carbon air vents aft of the front and rear fender flares, as well as the center sections of the front and rear fascia, which are made from that same hi-tech material. The new center sections are reminiscent of skid plates.

Decidedly sporty exposed-carbon highlights finished with high-gloss sealant are part of a BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK as well. They include the hood cowl, the LED lighting element above the windshield, the rub strips, the door handles, the rear spoiler with integrated carbon fiber elements, and the spare wheel cover.

The new supercar runs on forged BRABUS Monoblock Z “PLATINUM EDITION” ten-spoke alloys, which were of course also painted in vehicle color. Wheels of size 10Jx24 carrying size 295/30 ZR 24 street tires perfectly fill out the existing space under the flares at the front. The rear axle uses rims of size 12Jx24 with size 355/25 ZR 24 tires.

The BRABUS Ride Control aluminum coilover suspension is attuned to the high-performance street tires and represents another custom development of the Bottrop Manufaktur. To this end, the front axle struts and rear axle shocks with integral heat sinks were milled from solid pieces of aluminum. They allow lowering the supercar by up to 45 millimeters (1.8 in) to a custom ride height. The damping can be adjusted with the Drive Select switch in the cockpit.

The “BRABUS 900 SUPERBLACK” badge on the passenger grab handle is not the only eye-catcher in the interior. The interior designers of the automotive refinement specialist also created a particularly exclusive BRABUS MASTERPIECE interior for this supercar. The interior is dominated by especially soft and skin-friendly, black leather in line with the exterior paint finish.

These classy interior appointments demonstrate the great love of detail of the BRABUS upholsterers also in the upholstery design. A typical example of this is the shell-shaped quilting on the seat surfaces and the inner sections of the door panels. In addition, these leather sections feature perforations applied with pinpoint precision. The floor of the cabin and the entire trunk sport quilting of the same design.

In addition to the speedometer with 300-km/h scale (186 mph), the exclusive interior of the new supercar also includes a host of sporty carbon elements such as the paddle shifters, parts of the steering wheel rim, as well as the trim on dashboard, door panels and center console. Carbon scuff plates at all four doors and the liftgate also add attractive highlights with a BRABUS logo that changes color in sync with the interior ambient lighting.

Befitting the all-black cockpit, all controls, air vents, speaker grills and bezels were finished with matt ‘Shadow Grey’ glazing. Further exclusive BRABUS accessories in the interior are the aluminum pedals and door lock pins, which all sport glazing of that same color.

However, the BRABUS interior design for the G-Class enhances not only the looks, but also the functionality. The special BRABUS door hinges facilitate getting in and out of the rear compartment, because the doors have an opening angle of 90 degrees and thus swing open significantly wider than in the production car.

For Lamborghini, 2022 is the year of the V12, its legendary 12-cylinder engine that has powered iconic models for almost 60 years of history and became a symbol of technological innovation, vision, and engineering expertise: the foundations of Lamborghini’s DNA.

Before entering the hybridisation phase in 2023 with the advent of the first series production model, Lamborghini is paying tribute to its most memorable engine in a retrospective account of the cars that have featured it. The first ever Lamborghini to leave the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory in 1964 was the 350 GT, more recently taken to the historic centre of Bologna for an epic encounter with the latest V12 in the brand’s history, the Aventador Ultimae.

The genius Giotto Bizzarrini and the story of a contract ‘with a bonus for every 10 extra horsepower’

To design the engine, Ferruccio Lamborghini chose an exceptional external consultant, the engineer Giotto Bizzarrini, born in Quercianella (province of Livorno) in 1926, still today considered one of the best engine designers who ever lived. Bizzarrini was a huge fan of racing and dreamed of building an engine for Formula One.

The agreement with Lamborghini was simple and created the basis for something absolutely extraordinary: 12 V-cylinders, displacement of 3.5 litres, and lots and lots of horsepower: at least 350.

As an incentive for Bizzarrini, Lamborghini included in the contract a bonus for every additional 10 horsepower. When the engine ran on the test bench for the first time in July 1963, the readings were spectacular, with 360 HP at 9,000 rpm. Ferruccio Lamborghini paid what he owed, including the bonus for the extra horsepower, but he realised he was in trouble. In fact, Bizzarrini had designed a Formula One engine that was unsuitable for road use and mass production.

The arrival of Paolo Stanzani: the engine was rationalised and reached over 250 km/h

It was then Paolo Stanzani, one of the most highly regarded engineers in the history of Lamborghini, who was entrusted with the job of “civilising” this engine. His work, though capable of maintaining the engine’s exceptional performance and making it pleasantly drivable even at medium and low revs, did not alter the basic technical specs, which in many points would become a first for a series-produced car. Its maximum power output of 280 HP at 6,500 rpm was enough to propel the 350 GT, the first production Lamborghini model debuting in 1964, to a top speed of over 250 km/h.

The first customer launches the brand’s popularity in the entertainment world

The first 350 GT was delivered to Livorno-native drummer, Giampiero Giusti. This marked the beginning of a close relationship between Lamborghini and the entertainment world in which many actors and musical performers became passionate customers of the company.

The same car, now the oldest production Lamborghini in existence, perfectly restored and certified by Polo Storico, won ‘Best in Show’ at the ‘Lamborghini & Design’ Concorso d’Eleganza organised by Lamborghini Polo Storico, held in Trieste in 2019.

From music to movies

The starring cinematic role for a 350 GT was in the 1967 Columbia Pictures film, ‘Kill Me Quick, I’m Cold’, directed by Francesco Maselli, where it was used as a means of transport for the leading couple, the celebrated Monica Vitti and Jean Sorel.

A benchmark up to the 1990s

From its debut in 1964, the Lamborghini V12 became a benchmark for its torque, elasticity, reliability and durability. The same unit, with only minimal modifications, would remain in production until the 1990s, growing to seven litres of displacement with power over 500 HP, before subsequently receiving more substantial structural modifications.

Hyundai Motor Company earned three honors at the 2022 Autocar Awards. Judges from the world’s oldest motoring magazine named SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center, its Design Hero of the Year, and recognized Hyundai i20 N as Britain’s Most Affordable Driver’s Car and Hyundai Santa Fe as the Best Large Car.
The prestigious Autocar Awards recognize the very best of the automotive industry, whether it be innovative technologies or extraordinary design. For the first time, the 2022 ceremony incorporated both Britain’s Best Driver’s Cars and Britain’s Best Cars Awards, giving a more comprehensive view of the automotive world than ever before. This year, an in-person ceremony was held at the impressive Silverstone Wing.
The title of Design Hero of the Year is given by Autocar to an individual who has made a significant impact in the world of automotive design, not just in the preceding year, but throughout their entire career. SangYup Lee’s recent work as the head of Hyundai Global Design Center has garnered universal praise, including IONIQ 5, which recently won World Car Design of the Year, World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle of the Year.
But it’s the breadth of Hyundai’s design excellence under Lee’s leadership that impressed the judges. At the iF design Awards 2021, Hyundai won in nine separate categories, and has been victorious for nine consecutive years. In early 2021, Hyundai won four GOOD DESIGN Awards, including for the Prophecy concept car, which was also named ‘Best of the Best’ at the Red Dot design awards.
“SangYup Lee joined Hyundai in 2016 and, as chief designer for Hyundai and Genesis, he’s overseeing the creation of 50 production cars at any one time across 11 global design centers, with a team of 700 people,” said Mark Tisshaw, Autocar Editor. “As part of his role, he has masterminded a transformation in Hyundai design that has seen it become increasingly admired, most markedly for IONIQ 5 but also for the upcoming IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 7, as previewed by the Prophecy and Seven concepts.”
Lee said: “Looking back through the previous winners of Autocar’s Design Hero Award, it’s a real honor to now be sitting alongside some of the people I consider to be my own design heroes. Thank you to the team at Autocar for recognizing the work of the Hyundai Global Design Center with such a prestigious accolade. I gratefully accept this award on behalf of all our designers and engineers, who are dedicated, talented, and endlessly creative, and who continue to innovate our brand from all over the world.”
Hyundai Motor also won two product categories at the Autocar Awards, including Britain’s Most Affordable Driver’s Car for the i20 N, about which Tisshaw said: “The i20 N secured victory here by quite some margin. With five judges awarding each car a score out of 25, the i20 N bagged 102 points, well ahead of second place. This car is a cohesive, tenacious and serious proposition for keen drivers, and one that moves the N sub-brand on significantly, even from the impressive level of the larger i30 N.”
Since its introduction in 2019, i20 N has consistently impressed, winning a series of awards, including Top Gear Car of the Year and UK Performance Car of the Year. The comprehensively equipped i20 N builds on the strengths of Hyundai’s renowned, performance-focused N brand and the success of the acclaimed i20. A true sporting icon, i20 N also takes inspiration and engineering values from the multiple-rally-winning i20 Coupe WRC car. It’s equally at home delivering its unique brand of exhilarating performance both on the road and racetrack.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Santa Fe was named Autocar’s Best Large Car, about which Tisshaw said: “If you think big cars can’t be frugal and well-priced, or that hardworking SUVs can’t feel plush or inviting, or that plug-in hybrids impose too many compromises to be useful in real-world family motoring, Santa Fe stands ready to show you different.”
Santa Fe is Hyundai’s longest-running SUV, first sold in the UK in 2001. The D-segment SUV has been praised for its comfort and roominess, comprehensive standard features and functional cabin design, with the latest version offering a series of improvements to offer a more premium choice for its customers. Available with the options of a hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time, it also features a bold, distinctive new design and a range of new technology and safety features.
Winning in these highly competitive product categories is a significant achievement for Hyundai,” said Che Young Kim, Head of Product Division at Hyundai Motor Group. “It’s a testament to the hard work that goes into producing class-leading products, and to the amazing individuals we have leading and working in our design and product development teams. Santa Fe and i20 N may be very different cars, but the same ingenuity and technical prowess goes into their creation.

Ferrari N.V. (NYSE/MTA: RACE) (“Ferrari” or the “Company”) today announces its consolidated preliminary results(2) for the third quarter ended March 31, 2022.

Shipments totalled 3,251 units in Q1 2022, up 480 units or 17.3% versus the prior year.

The product portfolio in the quarter included eight internal combustion engine (ICE) models and two hybrid engine models, which represented 83% and 17% of total shipments, respectively.

Shipments during the quarter were driven by the Ferrari Roma and the SF90 family, together with the Portofino M. In the quarter, the first deliveries of the 812 Competizione commenced. The Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 were lower compared to the prior year and reached the end of their limited-series run. The deliveries of the 296 GTB will begin in the second quarter of 2022, as planned.

Quarterly shipments reflected the deliberate geographic allocation in response to port congestion observed in the first months of the year. As a result, EMEA(4) was up 19.5%, Americas(4) was down by 12.8%, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan recorded a robust 46.9% increase in line with the strength of the demand from Mainland China, and Rest of APAC(4) grew by 55.6%.

Net revenues for the first quarter of 2022 were Euro 1,186 million, up 17.3% or 16.6% at constant currency(1) .

Revenues from Cars and spare parts(5) were Euro 1,012 million (up 18.3% or 17.9% at constant currency(1) ), thanks to higher volume, positive product mix and pricing, together with the contribution from personalizations.

The decrease in Engines(6) revenues (Euro 37 million, down 17.8%, also at constant currency(1) ) was attributable to lower shipments to Maserati, as the 2023 contract expiration gets closer.

Sponsorship, commercial and brand(7) revenues reached Euro 109 million, up 19.6% or 17.2% at constant currency(1) mainly attributable to the better prior year Formula 1 ranking and the contribution from brand-related activities, partially offset by lower sponsorship. Other(8) revenues increased to Euro 28 million (up 42.0% or 37.1% at constant currency(1) ) mainly due to other supporting activities

2022 guidance, subject to trading conditions unaffected by Covid-19 pandemic restrictions and based on the following assumptions:
• Carefully leveraging strong demand
• Richer model mix being more than offset by the negative impact from the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 phase out
• Ferrari Daytona SP3 and Ferrari Purosangue will commence production in 2022 with deliveries starting in 2023
• Formula 1 revenues reflecting more diversified but lower sponsorship, partially offset by better prior year ranking
• Increasing depreciation and amortization in line with the start of production of new models
• Industrial free cash flow generation sustained by Daytona SP3 advances collection
• Disciplined capital expenditures to fuel long term development

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. last week issued an update on progress achieved at the mid-point of its four-year Nissan NEXT transformation plan, coinciding with publication of the company’s full-year results for the 12 months to March 31, 2022.

The Nissan NEXT plan was launched in May 2020 with the goals of rationalizing capacity and streamlining operations, prioritizing core markets and focusing on core models and technologies, while revitalizing the foundation of the business.

Nissan is ahead of plan in key areas across its rationalization initiatives, creating a leaner business true to its strengths concentrated on delivering sustainable profitability. In the first two years, Nissan has optimized production, streamlined its product line-up, and refined its global management structure. These efforts have bolstered Nissan’s ability to respond to unprecedented transformations in mobility as well as global disruptions, while reducing Nissan’s breakeven point and generating material cost savings.

Nissan has also delivered progress ahead of plan for its prioritization and focus initiatives, improving the quality of its business foundations and positioning the company to progress its long-term electrification and carbon neutrality ambitions. Nissan will further intensify its focus on the seeds of future growth and revitalize its foundations through ongoing cultural transformation efforts.

In its Nissan NEXT update, the company has reported progress in the following areas:

  1. Rationalization actions to strengthen agility and sustainable profitability
  • Global production capacity reduced by 20%
  • Product line-up reduced by 15%, with Nissan dedicating more resources to its most compelling models

The BRABUS designers invested their decades of experience in the development of carbon bodywork components for the current Rolls-Royce Ghost. Their top priority always is a compelling combination of sporty styling and aerodynamic efficiency. The BRABUS components are produced from lightweight yet very strong carbon and impress with outstanding, precise fit and flawless surfaces. They come with a choice of glossy or matt finish, but can also be painted in vehicle or contrasting color.

The BRABUS front spoiler mounts to the production bumper. In concert with the carbon surrounds that sharpen the athletic profile of the two side air intakes, it gives the vehicle a sportier looking front. What is more: the spoiler minimizes front-axle lift at high speeds, further optimizing the handling stability as a result.

The BRABUS bodywork refit also adds striking highlights from the rear. The subtle lip spoiler gives the vehicle a sportier touch and also contributes to an optimal balance. The BRABUS carbon diffuser provides a sporty upgrade for the rear bumper of the Ghost and also precisely frames the four BRABUS carbon/titanium exhaust pipes, which can be combined either with the production exhaust or with the all-stainless sport exhaust system from the automotive refinement specialist. The integral system of actively controlled butterfly valves enables the driver to choose between a subtle “Coming Home” mode and the “Sport” position from inside the cockpit. The latter brings the full power of the twelve-cylinder engine also acoustically to the fore.

Thanks to its sophisticated design, the sport exhaust also contributes to the performance optimization and is thus also advisable for complementing the BRABUS PowerXtra RR68-700 performance upgrade. The BRABUS powerplant engineers developed new maps for injection and ignition conducting extensive tests on state-of-the-art test benches and test drives on the road. They also reprogrammed the electronic boost pressure control. The new plug-and-play engine control module is adapted to the electronic engine control unit of the Rolls-Royce Ghost. After the installation, the engine’s peak power increases by 95 kW / 129 hp (127 bhp), while peak torque grows by 100 Nm (74 lb-ft). BRABUS recommends high-performance lubricants from MOTUL.

With an output of 515 kW / 700 hp (690 bhp) at 6,300 rpm and a peak torque of 950 Nm (701 lb-ft) at a low 2,000 rpm, the enhanced luxury sedan sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds. The top speed remains limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

To make the handling of the British luxury sedan more agile, the BRABUS chassis engineers developed tailor-made 21- and 22-inch wheels in four different designs. The vehicle pictured here is equipped with BRABUS Monoblock M “PLATINUM EDITION” forged rims sporting a ‘Shadow Chrome’ paint finish. This hi-tech wheel impresses with a combination of large disc design and ten smaller and larger openings each that brighten the looks. What is more: Their sophisticated shape also optimizes brake ventilation and cooling.

The rims of size 9Jx22 on the front axle and size 10.5Jx22 at the rear fill out the available space under the wheel arches of the Ghost perfectly. The matching high-performance tires of sizes 265/35 ZR 22 at the front and 305/30 ZR 22 on the rear axle are supplied by BRABUS technology partners Continental, Pirelli or YOKOHAMA.

The BRABUS lowering module for the standard air suspension of the Ghost is specifically calibrated to harmonize with this sporty wheel/tire combination. It lowers the ride height by about 30 millimeters (1.2 in) without impairing the ride quality.

The German automotive refinement company specializes in making even the most unusual requests of its customers come true. This also includes a particularly exclusive BRABUS MASTERPIECE interior, which the company upholstery shop precisely tailors to the wishes of the respective customer in every detail.

The vehicle presented here features especially soft and breathable, porcelain-colored leather with black piping to create a contrast to the black exterior paint finish. It is crafted with consummate workmanship in every nook and cranny. The square quilting of the leather on select sections of seats, door panels and armrests is applied with meticulous precision. That same leather covers the floor of the luxury liner and features the identical quilting throughout. The identical level of precision is found in the perforations of the exquisite material on the seat surfaces, which optimizes the integrated seat ventilation. The headliner is made from black Alcantara.

Polished stainless pedals, exposed-carbon scuff plates with BRABUS logo with red and white backlighting, and the carbon elements for instrument panel and center console add sporty touches.

The BMW Group is using innovative technologies in its efforts to improve sustainability and taking advantage of new options to conserve resources and reduce emissions from painting bodywork.

The BMW Group is the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to use matt paints made from biomass instead of crude oil at its European plants. In addition to this, BMW Group Plants Leipzig and Rosslyn (South Africa) are also using sustainably-produced corrosion protection. Renewable raw materials such as bio-waste or waste from sewage treatment plants serve as the starting material for the paints. The CO2 savings determined in a TÜV-certified process amount to over 15,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions between now and 2030.

“By reducing our use of fossil raw materials, we can conserve natural resources and lower CO2 emissions at the same time. To achieve this, we are increasingly relying on sustainability innovations in our supplier network,” says Joachim Post, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network. “Innovative paints based on renewable raw materials are an important step in this direction.”

Organic waste replaces fossil resources

BASF’s innovative production process makes it possible to replace petroleum-based precursors, such as naphtha, with renewable raw materials from organic waste, starting in the early stages of paint production. This not only reduces consumption of fossil resources, but also avoids the CO2 emissions associated with the production, transport and processing of crude oil.

The corrosion protection and matt paints used at BMW Group Plants Leipzig and Rosslyn are chemically identical to the paints previously used, with all the same properties as conventionally manufactured body coatings. Since bio-based and conventional coatings are produced on the same line, BASF adopts an externally certified mass balance approach.

The amount of paint purchased by the BMW Group is calculated to be exactly equivalent to the amount of bio-naphtha and bio-methane that would be required for 100-percent petroleum-free production. The sustainable manufacturing process reduces the CO2 emissions from paint production by more than 40 percent. The two BMW Group plants in Leipzig and Rosslyn produce an average of around 250,000 vehicles per year.

Peter Schreyer and the Kia EV6 have picked up top honors in the 2022 Autocar Awards, in a ceremony held at the UK’s Silverstone Circuit on Tuesday 10 May.

The Kia EV6 was named the ‘Best Electric Car’ by Autocar, while Peter Schreyer received the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award for his contribution to automotive design throughout his career.

Kia EV6 named ‘Best Electric Car’

No stranger to awards since its launch in late 2021, the EV6 has been named ‘Best Electric Car’ in 2022 by the world’s oldest car magazine.

Mark Tisshaw, Editor for Autocar, comments: “With the EV6, Kia has eclipsed its natural rivals, and the car goes further than most rivals to make everyday motoring feel special. Aside from being an excellent electric car in its own right, the EV6 also represents Kia’s coming of age. Over the past 30 years, the Korean brand has gradually worked its way up to become the technology and market leader that it is today. The fact that a ‘GT’ version of the EV6 is coming next year suggests Kia’s end goal is loftier still.”

Kia’s first dedicated electric car, the EV6 is based on the new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). Its practical interior, cutting-edge design, and high-tech features are matched by its extraordinary EV capabilities. It offers up to 328 miles of range from a single charge and offers 800V ultra-fast charging as standard, enabling it to recharge from 10-to-80 per cent in just 18 minutes from a 350kW charger.

The EV6 is one of 14 EVs that Kia plans to launch globally by 2027 as the company positions itself as a sustainable mobility solutions provider.

Lifetime Achievement for Peter Schreyer

Peter Schreyer received Autocar’s ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award for an incredible career spanning decades.

Now Executive Design Advisor and brand ambassador at Hyundai Motor Group, Peter Schreyer headed Kia’s design-led approach to product development for more than a decade. His efforts and expertise have had a transformative on the brand’s success globally in recent years.

Mark Tisshaw comments: “Few people have the determination and ability to change the course of a massive car conglomerate for the better. But Peter Schreyer did just this in 2006 when he accepted the position as Kia’s chief design officer. To say Schreyer has succeeded in his mission is quite an understatement: Kia’s global sales rocketed from 1.6 million to 3 million between 2009 and 2016, and much of that upward thrust was attributed to the rapidly elevated design appeal of Schreyer-era models. His portfolio represents the gold standard of automotive design success and he truly deserves Autocar’s 2022 ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award.”

Commenting on his award, designer Peter Schreyer said: “It is an honor to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award. I have been fortunate to have been involved in many projects over my 40+ year design career and privileged to work with some very talented teams to develop vehicles that have resonated with customers the world over.”

“In 2006, I was given the opportunity to join Kia and the freedom to conceive a desirable design brand. It was a truly enriching moment in my career. Thanks to visionary leadership of the Group and the trust they placed in me, we led the transformation of the Hyundai Motor Group and created a legacy the company can build on for the future. Since then, I have been involved in many successful programs for the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, and I look forward to continuing my work for the Group,” he added.

Born in 1953 in Bad Reichenhall, Germany, Schreyer has enjoyed an illustrious career as an automotive designer. He received his professional education at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and at the renowned Royal College of Art in London, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007.

In 2006, Schreyer was appointed Chief Design Officer at Kia. During his tenure, he proved instrumental in creating a fresh new design direction for the brand, including the introduction of the distinctive ‘tiger nose’ grille. His major design highlights at Kia include the 3rd and 4th -generation Sportage, K5, Stinger, Telluride and several innovative and critically acclaimed concept cars, such as the 2007 Kia Kee and 2010 Kia Pop.

Named President and Chief Design Officer of Hyundai Motor Group in 2013, Schreyer’s unique approach to design has transformed Kia and Hyundai into highly desirable and recognizable brands. In February 2022, Schreyer was named Executive Design Advisor and brand ambassador for the Hyundai Motor Group.

Before joining Kia, he was responsible for the design of pioneering models including the Audi A2, Audi TT, Volkswagen New Beetle and Volkswagen Golf IV at Audi and the Volkswagen Group.

Hyundai Motor Company will offer its first exclusive Metamobility Non-Fungible Token (NFT) collection, ‘Shooting Star,’ through its official NFT website, on May 9-10.

The ‘Shooting Star’ collection builds on the momentum created on April 18 when Hyundai Motor announced that it would become the first automaker to build a global NFT community. The buzz generated in the NFT market led to its initial offering, the ‘Hyundai x Meta Kongz’ limited edition NFTs, selling out soon after they were released.

For its NFT community, Hyundai Motor launched dedicated channels on Discord and Twitter as well as an official website that launched on May 2 to form an online community. Hyundai Motor secured 127,000 members on Discord and attracted 86,000 members on Twitter.

Hyundai Motor is operating 24/7 communications channels and hosting various events for its NFT community. Members have been actively participating in the community by posting their own memes and fan art. For the whitelist events, an estimated 0.7 million people gathered to buy Hyundai NFTs.

On May 9-10, Hyundai Motor will sell 10,000 official Ethereum-based ‘Shooting Star’ NFTs on its official NFT website. The company selected the Ethereum platform based on its reliability and plans to change its minting system in a sustainable way this year. Pre-sale for whitelist buyers who won the NFT community event hosted by Hyundai Motor will be on May 9, followed by a general sale on May 10 (please refer to the website for more information).

The sale of an NFT in the form of a shooting star will be followed by the latest film of ‘Hyundai x Meta Kongz,’ which ends with ‘Kongz’ finding a shooting star stuck in a Hyundai Pony windshield wiper. Starting with the sale, Hyundai Motor will create a full-fledged NFT project within the concept of its ‘Metamobility universe.’

Hyundai Motor’s Metamobility NFT applies the ‘Reveal’ method, showing a placeholder image first, and then revealing the actual individual NFT images later. In other words, the 10,000 placeholder ‘Shooting Star’ NFTs will turn into unique Metamobility NFTs in various shapes in late May.

Starting with our ‘Shooting Star’ NFTs, we are expanding the Hyundai brand experience into the ‘Metamobility universe,’ creating unique opportunities for our NFT community members to join in the fun,” said Thomas Schemera, Hyundai Motor’s Global Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Customer Experience Division. “We plan to launch more unique NFTs based on the ‘Metamobility universe’ concept and introduce more member benefits to expand the community going forward. We welcome everyone to be part of our experimental journey.
