The main reason why the word “cancer” strikes fear in our hearts is that it is the second leading cause of death on a global scale. In 2018 alone, it led to 9.6 million deaths in countries across the world. It is a sad fact that the ability to afford diagnosis and treatment also has a significant impact on the mortality rate when it comes to cancer. About 70 percent of the deaths caused by cancer occur in low and middle income countries. It does however have to be admitted that especially in developing countries, lack of access to proper diagnosis and treatment plays a key role in increasing the mortality rate.

Hence, it is truly welcome news that Toshiba Corporation has developed technology that can be used to detect 13 types of cancer. What is even more striking is that the equipment that has been developed uses just a single drop of blood and can detect cancer with 99 percent accuracy. This can eventually lead to a scenario where there is less need for highly expensive CAT scans, endoscopies and other diagnostic techniques.

Toshiba had developed the diagnosis method by working in collaboration with the National Cancer Center Research Institute and Tokyo Medical University in Japan. The next step that the research team needs to take is to make the technology employable on a practical basis by checking if the high accuracy rate can be maintained in trials that cover more specimens. The current plan is to commence trials of the new equipment in 2020 and to make the process commercially viable within a few years.

“Much hope is being placed on the practical use of the technology,” said Tomio Nakayama, chief of the Division of Screening Assessment and Management at the National Cancer Center Japan. “But there have been countless research examples struggling to control the costs and establish methods of screening. A crucial test lies ahead for the (researchers).”

Use of the technology for early detection of cancer would go a long way towards treating cancer in its early stage and thus decreasing the mortality rate.

The method works by closely examining the types and concentration of microRNA molecules which are secreted in the blood from cancer cells. There are about 2,500 type of microRNA. According to experts, the amount of some of these microRNA which is produced in cancer cells is different from that produced in healthy cells, and researchers hope to leverage this difference for cancer screenings.

Toshiba is not the only company working on this technology. Toray Industries Inc. and several other companies are also investigating the development of technologies to diagnose cancer using microRNA molecules from a blood sample, but Toshiba is the only company that has announced significant developments in this regard.

Koji Hashimoto, chief research scientist at Toshiba’s Frontier Research Laboratory, said at a press briefing that when compared to the methods used by other companies, Toshiba’s methods far outrank them in terms of the degree of accuracy in cancer detection, the time needed for detection and the cost.

The test that Toshiba has developed can be used for the detection of gastric, esophageal, lung, liver, biliary tract, pancreatic, bowel, ovarian, prostate, bladder and breast cancers as well as sarcoma and glioma. The method involves the use of a chip and a small device that can conduct the diagnosis in less than two hours. Using these, a blood test can be conducted at a nominal cost of JPY 20,000 (USD 183) or less. The company is hoping that this blood test would soon be a part of annual medical examinations and other screenings. The new test is definitely holding out the promise of saving a lot of time and money when it comes to detection of cancer. Tests that are currently in vogue like X-ray diagnosis depend to a significant degree on visual judgements and this means that there is less likelihood of detecting minor tumors and “stage zero” cancer. Hence, there is more scope for error.

The only drawback with the test is that though it can detect with staggering accuracy whether a patient has cancer, it is unable at this stage for using the test to determine which of the 13 types of cancer the patient has.

As part of its five-year business strategy that it had announced in April 2019, Toshiba had said that its medical businesses, including genome analysis and cell diagnosis, would serve as its key growth pillars along with automation, batteries and digital solutions using artificial intelligence.

The UAE has one of the highest rates of obesity in the world and this closely related to the prevalence of lifestyle diseases like heart diseases and Type 2 diabetes. The quest to reduce obesity levels is the need of the hour and with the recent Dubai Fitness challenge, diets and exercise are in the spotlight. The ketogenic diet seems to be the flavor of the moment. Hence, let us take a close look at the pros and cons of this extremely popular diet.

The Ketogenic Diet involves switching the manner in which our body uses the nutrients we take by changing our metabolism from a sugar burning one to a fat burning metabolism. This is done by severely limiting the quantity of carbohydrates that we consume and consuming more fats. Hence, this diet is definitely one that carnivores would love. But if you are someone who loves pizza, bread and pasta, this is definitely not the diet for you.

Benefits of a ketogenic diet:

1. Weight Loss: Many people adopt the ketogenic diet because they want to lose weight and it is highly effective. When you take in less carbohydrates, your body does become more efficient at using the fat stored over the past years for energy and you lose body fat more quickly. Taking in more fats also helps to limit cravings as you feel full more quickly.
2. It is a good diet for sedentary people: If you have a pretty sedentary lifestyle and do not have the time to spare for the gym, the keto diet is perfect. You do not need much carbs to function when you have a desk job. It is when you are highly active that you need to get energy from carbohydrates.
3. The keto diet can Help Prevent Cancer: There have been a few which indicate that a diet that is very low in carbohydrates might help prevent cancer. It is not yet clear how true this is.
4. Keto Diet can Boost Insulin Sensitivity: Consuming low amounts of carbohydrates can hep your body to boost the manner in which it utilizes glucose and derives sugar from carbohydrates with the help of insulin. It is insulin resistance that leads to diabetes in the long run.
5. Reduce Risk of Heart disease: A ketogenic diet can increase HDL (good cholesterol) levels, and reduce bl blood sugar, blood pressure, and body fat, thus reducing risk of heart disease.
6. Acne: Eating less carbohydrates and processed foods can help clear acne.
7.

Defects of Ketogenic Diet:

1. Not for an Active Lifestyle: If you follow an active and athletic lifestyle or spend a lot of time at the gym, you will need to eat a high carb diet as it promotes higher energy levels and athletic performance.
2. A keto diet may affect your ability to focus: The brain does need sugar to focus and going on a keto diet might affect your ability to focus and concentrate. One side effect of the keto diet is the “keto flu” which is characterized by headaches, fatigue, nausea and poor mental function.
3. Nutrient Deficiencies: The ketogenic diet involves exclusions of whole food groups are excluded, and hence lack of the nutrients that are generally typically found in foods like whole grains and fruit can lead to nutrient deficiencies
4. This diet is not for everyone: Though this diet is good for those who are diabetic or overweight, it will work only for those who can follow it consistently and are highly committed to the diet. It cannot work for those with an addiction to carbs or those who are not satisfied with a limited variety of food and food groups. Missing out on foods that give a lot of pleasure like ice cream, cream based soups, fruit and rice dishes is a struggle for most people

In recent years, there has been an upswing in obesity rates, and statistics have revealed that the UAE has one of the highest rates of obesity in the world. Hence, focus has shifted to eating foods that are deemed to be healthy with avocados and greens being deemed as foods that are in favor, going by viral posts on social media. In view of this trend, eating a bar or even a square of chocolate can lead to even more guilt than usual. But what if chocolate is actually good for you? Not all kinds of chocolate, but dark chocolate has been deemed by some experts to actually have a few beneficial qualities. Read on to learn more about the benefits of eating dark chocolate so that you no longer feel guilty about indulging in your favorite snack:

1. Chocolate is a Good Source of Antioxidants: Chocolate is made from the seed of the cocoa tree. This is deemed to be one of the best sources of antioxidants. Many scientific studies have shown that the bioactive compounds in dark chocolate and cocoa can help decrease blood pressure and improve blood flow.

2. Dark chocolate is a Good Source of Nutrients: Good quality dark chocolate has plenty of fiber and minerals like iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and selenium as well as a good amount of soluble fiber. It also has plenty of saturated and monounsaturated and small amounts of polyunsaturated fat. So, it is not just a source of empty calories.

3. Dark Chocolate can Improve Cardiac health: Dark Chocolate can raise HDL (“good” cholesterol) and protects LDL or “bad” cholesterol from oxidation thus preventing it from damaging other tissues in the body. A controlled study found that consumption of dark chocolate two or three times in a week reduced the risk of having calcified plaque in the arteries by 32 percent.

4. Dark chocolate can Reduce the Risk of Diabetes: Dark chocolate can also reduce insulin resistance by reducing oxidative stress. Scientists think this is the main cause of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is seen as a risk factor for diabetes. Eating dark chocolate could help the body refine the manner in which it metabolizes glucose..

5. Dark Chocolate Might Improve Cognitive Function in Older People: Observational studies have indicated that cocoa might contribute to improving cognitive function in elderly people who have been affected by a decline in their mental capacity. Eating high-flavanol cocoa improved blood flow to the brain even in healthy volunteers who participated in a controlled study. This leads to better verbal fluency.

6. Consuming Dark Chocolate Might Protect Skin Against Sun Damage: Dark chocolate has flavanols which can protect our skin against sun damage and enhance skin hydration and density.

7. Dar Chocolate Might Help with Weight Loss: It might sound a bit counter intuitive consuming dark chocolate might help to control appetite and thus assist with efforts to lose weight. It is said that eating a bit of dark chocolate before or after meals can trigger hormones which might signal satiety to our brain.
8. In view of the considerable health benefits that dark chocolate offers, there is no need to feel guilty about having a square or two as a snack after dinner. Ideally, the chocolate you consume should be without milk or sugar, but it is still okay to have a bar of chocolate with added sugar once in a while as long as you don’t go over indulge. To be on the safe side, always opt for quality dark chocolate having cocoa content of 70 percent or more.

The liver is the second biggest organ in the body. While it is known for its capacity to regenerate, the prospect of any kind of damage to the liver is scary as it plays such a key role in our body’s functioning. It performs multiple functions including breakdown of nutrients that are ingested like fat and detoxification of blood. It truly is an organ without which you cannot function. Generally, there is very little warning of any kind of damage to the liver. Hence, we need to be really alert to learn of any such damage in the initial stages when it is reversible. Knowledge about such symptoms can help us to get early diagnosis and treatment.
Here are a few symptoms that you need to watch out for. If you experience any of these, it might be prudent to visit a doctor and get him to check on the functioning of your liver.

Swollen Abdomen

Your friends might tease you about your beer belly and the pounds you are piling on, but it might not be just because of the food you eat. A swollen belly might point to ascites, which is caused by damage to the liver and results in fluid buildup within the abdominal area. Ascites is known to be caused by a damaged liver. The most common causes of the condition are alcoholic liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Another symptom of ascites is swelling of the legs. Generally, ascites is treated by reducing the intake of salt and administration of diuretics. If ascites is ignored, it could result in the damage becoming so extensive that a liver transplant is needed.

Jaundice
Jaundice is one of the most obvious signs of damage to the liver and is characterized by fatigue and yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Jaundice occurs when the liver fails to remove bilirubin or bile from red blood cells in an effective manner. The underlying liver disease needs to be treated before jaundice is resolved.

Pain in the upper right abdominal area

Pain in this region could point to an inflammation of the liver. This could be caused due to various underlying conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis and ascites. Though this is generally resolved in the short term by taking over the counter medication, the underlying cause still remains and will need further treatment. In some cases, taking over the counter medication can aggravate the damage to the liver.

Change in color of urine and stool

Though some changes in the color of stool and urine can be attributed to the kind of foods that we eat, if the urine becomes light yellow and continues to remain pale for a long time, it means that the liver might be damaged. As in the case of jaundice, it indicates that the liver is unable to break down bilirubin it is not being removed from the body. Stool gets its brown color from bilirubin. When the liver is unable to breakdown bilirubin, the bilirubin goes to the kidneys and is excreted from the body through urine. This turns urine dark yellow while stool loses its dark brown color.

Constant Fatigue

One of the most common symptoms of damage to the liver is a constant feeling of tiredness and weakness to the muscles. This is usually the case when the damage is quite extensive. The liver helps to breakdown and store glucose which serves as a source of energy for the body. When it is damaged, it cannot release enough glucose for the body to function. This is why such people experience fatigue.

If you experience any of these symptoms, visit a doctor immediately as the condition can be managed and treated if detected in time.

Summer is here and this is generally the time when those living in the UAE indulge in maximum travel as they seek cooler climates and enjoy the school holidays. Traveling can take a heavy toll on our health, especially when we travel with children. Here are a few general guidelines that can go a long way towards reducing the fatigue and stress associated with traveling.

1. Be up to date with vaccinations: Your body is used to the diseases that you might encounter in your native country and in the UAE. But if you are traveling to an unfamiliar destination, especially in the case of children, it would be a wise step to ensure that you are up to date with all your immunizations and take any extra immunizations that might be needed to fend off foreign diseases. In the case of some foreign destinations, it is mandatory to take flu shots or vaccinations for diseases like yellow fever.

2. Stay Away from Sick Passengers: In view of the fact that planes, trains and buses are all places where a large number of people are confined together in close quarters for hours at a time, the chances of catching an infection are significantly high. If you feel that a fellow passenger is visibly sick, do your best to stay away. If they fail to cover their mouth or nose while coughing or sneezing, they would mostly likely be amenable to a polite request to do so. Make sure that you also practice the same etiquette while coughing or sneezing.

3. Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize: Take along plenty of travel wipes and hand sanitizers when you pack your bags. Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands before and after meals and trips to the bathroom. Ensure that you sanitize the hotel rooms you use as well though these are generally clean as the people who might have been staying before you occupy them could have had a cold or cough or fever. Thus, it would be a good idea to wipe down light switches, telephones, doorknobs, toilet seats, faucet handles, remote controls and any other high-touch areas.

4. Sleep: Grab plenty of sleep when you travel so that jet lag has minimal effect. Use travel pillows for maximum comfort. It is important to pace yourself when visiting tourist attractions and don’t try cramming too much into a day to cut costs as this could mean higher medical bills. Greater stress and fatigue and bad quality of sleep could lower your resistance to disease. To avoid exhaustion, it is better to stick to your normal bedtimes.

5. Stay Hydrated: When you are traveling, it is easy to lose track of your water intake. It is important to stay hydrated while flying as the dry air in the cabin can lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water before, during and after a flight. Avoid drinks like tea and coffee as they can also lead to dehydration and affect the quality of your sleep.

6. Pay attention to Diet: It is tempting to try all the local foods that you might see when you travel to foreign countries. But your stomach might not agree. Make sure you stick to a relatively healthy diet as it might not be an easy task to shed the pounds you gain while on holiday. Be cautious while trying street food as not all vendors might not be using hygienic methods of cooking food. A tummy upset can have a significant impact on the little time you have to enjoy a destination while on holiday. So, it is better to err on the side of caution.

Most of us tend to blame the water and the summer heat here for our thinning hairline. According to an article in the National, 65 percent of expatriates cited hair loss as a problem they experienced only after moving to the UAE, and blamed the country’s hot climate and desalinated water. Many say that the condition of their hair improves when they travel.

Doctors here attest to the fact that they receive more complaints from their patients regarding hair loss during the summer, to an extent of an increase of at least 10 percent. They attribute this increase to a combination of poor diets and a hot climate. The outcome is a significant increase in the flaking of the scalp leading to hair fall. Poor scalp health translates into unhealthy hair.

Though experts say that though water can cause hair to be dry, brittle or to look dull, they say that hair loss cannot be attributed to the poor quality of water. The water we use when showering does not reach the hair follicle as it is located under the skin on the scalp.

While it is true that our hair needs as much protection from the sun as our skin does, there might be a few other culprits that might be responsible for our hair loss.

One factor that we often fail to think of is a poor diet. A busy schedule that is a common feature of our lives in the Middle East means that we often eat on the run, scarfing down fast food that might not have all the nutrients that we might need for healthy skin and hair. This can contribute to the problem of hair loss.

Generally, it is considered normal to lose about 100 to 150 hairs on a daily basis. If greater hair loss is noticed, it is time to seek professional help

Here is a list of 10 foods that you must eat in order to protect your crowning glory:

1. Eggs

Eggs serve as a great source of protein and biotin, both of which can promote hair growth. Hair follicles are made up of mostly protein, and hence it is important to ensure that you get adequate protein in your diet. Biotin is needed for the production of a hair protein called keratin and research has indicated that intake of more more biotin can boost hair growth in people having a biotin deficiency. Eggs are also a good source of zinc, selenium and other nutrients which are good for the hair.

2. Berries

Berries like strawberries are a good source of antioxidants and vitamins like vitamin C which can promote hair growth. Vitamin C has strong antioxidant properties and help protect hair follicles against damage from harmful molecules called free radicals. Vitamin C is also used to produce collagen, a protein that helps strengthen hair to prevent it from becoming brittle and breaking and helps the body to absorb iron from the diet. Low iron levels cause anemia, which has been linked to hair loss.

3. Spinach

Spinach has plenty of beneficial nutrients like folate, iron, and vitamins A and C, all of can promote hair growth. Spinach is also a good source of iron.

4. Fatty Fish

Fatty fish like herring, salmon and mackerel have nutrients that may promote hair growth like omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to hair growth.

Fatty fish is also a great source of protein, selenium, vitamin D3 and B vitamins, nutrients that may help promote strong and healthy hair (17).

5. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a great source of beta-carotene, which is converted by the body into vitamin A, which is linked to good hair health.

Research has shown that vitamin A promotes the production of sebum, which helps to keep hair healthy. It could also promote the growth of thicker hair and increase the rate of hair growth.

6. Avocados

Avocados are the fruit of the moment. In addition to being delicious, and a great source of healthy fats, they are an excellent source of vitamin E, which may promote hair growth. Vitamin E also protects areas of the skin, like the scalp, from oxidative stress and damage.

7. Nuts

Nuts are not just tasty but also contain vitamin E, a wide variety of B vitamins, zinc and essential fatty acids. Deficiency in any of these nutrients has been linked to hair loss.

8. Seeds

Seeds like sunflower seeds, flax seeds and chia seeds may also promote hair growth as they are a good source of vitamin E, zinc, selenium and omega-3 fatty acids.

9. Capsicum or Sweet Peppers

Sweet peppers are an excellent source of vitamin C, which promotes hair growth and vitamin A.

10. Beans

Beans are an excellent source of protein for vegetarians. They also are a good source of zinc and many other hair-healthy nutrients, including iron, biotin and folate.

According to an article that was published in the Gulf News in 2018, about 30 per cent of adults in the UAE have high blood pressure. This figure was based on three separate studies that were conducted in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. It is expected to increase even further in the coming years due to the lifestyle, diet, stress and other factors.

Called the “silent killer”, hypertension is a condition about which there needs to be greater awareness. Less than 50 percent of those who have the condition are aware that they have it. It is generally diagnosed only when it seriously affects the quality of life of the patient. About 10 million people across the globe die every year due to hypertension. Many of these deaths could be prevented if the condition is diagnosed in time and proper treatment is taken.

These facts highlight the need to spread general awareness about this disease, its symptoms and general precautions that could be taken to minimize its impact on the health of patients.

Hypertension is the term given when a person has high blood pressure, and the force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels as it circulates is very high consistently. Such high blood pressure can cause damage to the blood vessels and the heart for years without the person even realizing it. This can result in the formation of blood clots, thus blocking blood circulation and causing strokes and heart attacks. Strokes and heart attacks can lead to paralysis, dementia and even death.

In some cases, there is no particular cause for hypertension and this is called ‘primary’ or ‘essential’ hypertension. In other cases, hypertension is ‘secondary’ to an underlying condition, like a hole in a blood vessel or kidney problems.

What can be done?

Many behavioral patterns are considered to be factors that increase the risk for hypertension. These include smoking, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity and a bad diet. A family history of hypertension also increases risk of having hypertension. Adopting a good diet and exercise regimen can significantly lower the risk of developing hypertension and help keep hypertension under control if you have it already.

Steps you can Take to Reduce High Blood Pressure

1.Watch your Weight: Conventional wisdom says that higher the weight, higher your blood pressure. Being overweight can also lead to sleep apnea and this can further contribute to high blood pressure levels. In general, for every kilo you use, your blood pressure drops by 1 mmHg. You also need to keep a close eye on your waist measurement. Men with waist measurement exceeding 40 inches and women with waist measurement greater than 35 inches have higher risk of experiencing hypertension.

2. Regular Exercise: We might think that we are too busy to exercise but when we learn of the benefits that this can offer to our health, sparing 30 minutes to exercise on a daily basis does not seem like much. Exercising regularly can lower your blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mm Hg if you have high blood pressure and prevent you from developing high blood pressure if you don’t have it.

3. Follow a Healthy Diet: A healthy diet that comprises plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy products will help to keep hypertension at bay. Foods that are high in potassium like lima beans, peas, oranges, spinach and apricots are considered to be highly beneficial.

4. Reduce Salt intake: Do your best to limit or even avoid foods that have a high salt content like deli meat, packaged soups, instant puddings, salad dressings etc. The intake of sodium on a daily basis should not exceed 2300 mg. Carefully examine sodium content of all packaged foods you buy and use less salt when cooking.

5. Quit Smoking: Smoking a cigarette can increase your blood pressure for many minutes even after you finish. So, smoking in any form, whether it is cigarettes, cigars, electronic smoking, sheesha or in any other form something you should try to avoid.

6.Reduce Stress: Chronic stress can lead to elevated levels like high blood pressure. Though the exact correlation is still to be known, reducing or avoiding stressors or learning how to cope with them in a healthier manner can lead to lower blood pressure levels

Dates have traditionally been considered as one of the ideal foods to begin with when you break your fast during the holy month of Ramadan. No iftar is complete without dates. In addition to traditional reasons, there are many health reasons why dates should be an essential part of your daily diet.

1. Dates are a natural energy booster:Dates are not only naturally sweet and delicious, but also boost your energy levels. They have high levels of natural sugars like glucose, fructose and sucrose. They can thus pacify your hunger pains to a significant extent.

2. Dates Promote Bone Health: Dates are a source of minerals which strengthen your bones. Dates contain several minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.Potassium is an electrolyte that promotes heart health while calcium is essential for bone health.

3. Dates are Good for Digestion: Dates have a high fiber content, even more fiber than bananas. Just a quarter cup of dates can account for 12 percent of the daily fiber requirement of an individual. This will help draw water into the digestive tract and minimize constipation.

4. Dates Promote Brain Health: Scientists have found that dates offer protection against oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain. Consumption of dates and similar fruits on a regular basis has been linked to a lowered risk of neurodegenerative diseases and better cognitive performance in older individuals.

5. Dates Promote Skin Health: Dates contain vitamins C and D that help the skin to retain its elasticity. It can also help the skin to combat ageing by preventing the accumulation of melanin.

6. Dates can help regulate Cholesterol: Thanks to their high fiber content, dates bind to cholesterol and can help in the excretion of cholesterol from the body. It is also thought that dates are helpful in reducing the level of triglycerides in the body.

7. Dates Lower the Risk of Stroke and Cardiac Disease: Dates help to lower the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol and are rich in antioxidants which reduce inflammation. Hence, they can make a significant contribution to reducing the risk of stroke and cardiac disease.

8. Dates can Reduce Risk of Anemia: Dates are rich in iron. Anemia has symptoms like dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue and brittle nails. It is generally caused by deficiency of iron. Increasing the intake of foods that are rich in iron like dates could reduce risk of anemia and provide relief from the symptoms of anemia.

9. Dates can build up resistance to cancer: Dates are high in polyphenols which increase the body’s resistance to inflammation. High levels of inflammation over the long term lead to higher chances for cancer. Regular intake of dates has also been linked to less incidence of colorectal cancer. It is also said that consuming more dates increases the growth of good bacteria in our digestive tract, thus promoting colon health.

10. Dates provide Support to the Nervous System and Help to Preserve Brain Function: It is a known fact that our nervous system and brain tissue degenerates as we age. Most of these adverse changes are linked to inflammation. The inflammation can be slowed down by controlling the effects of oxidants like cortisol. Dates are known to reduce the inflammatory effects of cortisol. Even serious diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s can be controlled if excessive inflammation can be curbed.

Many of us are so rushed in the morning that we feel we don’t have time for breakfast and after a hectic day at work, we take our time and have dinner late, usually just before going to bed. According to a new that was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, people who had both these habits are less likely to recover fast from a heart attack. For such people, the risk of death, another heart attack or the risk of having chest pain (angina) was four to five times higher. The study covered 113 people who had an average age of 60. 73 percent of the participants in the study were men.

The study mentioned who that people who regularly miss breakfast and have late dinners are likely to have other poor dietary and fitness habits like smoking and lack of a regular exercise regimen. Having a late dinner could reduce the urge to have breakfast in the morning. Someone who exercises in the morning is likely to work up an appetite and thus have at healthy breakfast.

The author of the study Dr. Marcos Minicucci, of São Paolo State University, Brazil, believes firmly in the concept that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, advising people to treat breakfast “like a king”. According to Dr. Minicucci, a healthy breakfast should comprise dairy products like low fat milk, yogurt and cheese, a carbohydrate like whole wheat bread and whole fruits. It should account for 15 to 35 percent of our total daily calorie intake. He also recommends having dinner at least two hours before going to bed.

We all know that exercise plays an important role in maintaining physical health. But how many of take up exercise because we know that it can also support our mental health? In fact, physical exercise can go a long way towards making us more focused, productive, energetic and alert in the short-term and make us healthier mentally in the long-term.

There is now growing evidence that greater blood circulation to the brain through the effects of regular physical exercise can help minimize the risk of age-related cognitive decline and memory loss.

Here are a few scientific reasons why aerobic exercise can enhance mental health

  1. Exercise can Reduces Brain Inflammation

It is the development of widespread inflammation in the body that leads to health conditions like diabetes, cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Such inflammation can also lead to mental deterioration with the end result being Alzheimer’s and loss of long-term memory. Regular aerobic exercise can play a key role in suppressing such inflammation. A study that was conducted in 2017 and was published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity found that in all 47 volunteers who participated in the study, only 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise decreased markers of inflammation. They concluded that such exercise can offset the inflammation that can occur in the hippocampus due to sleep deprivation.

  1. Exercise Improves Metabolism of glucose in the Brain

About half of the glucose produced in the body is directed to the brain for its optimal functioning. According to the results of a 2017 study which studies the daily activity of 93 participants that was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, regular exercise can improve glucose metabolism in the brain. They found that those who engaged in moderate activity for more than 68 minutes on a daily basis showed better results than those who spent less time exercising.

  1. Exercise Improves White Matter Integrity

The brain has over 50 percent white matter and this white matter performs the function of connecting the different parts of the brain to facilitate communication. The neurons of the brain or the nerve fibers are covered with a material called myelin and cognitive function is affected when the formation of new myelin  slows or stops. This can lead to conditions like depression and schizophrenia. A 2016 study which was also published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that myelin production can be stimulated through physical exercise as part of an analysis of the correlation between cardiorespiratory fitness and white matter integrity in 81 older adults, some with mild cognitive impairment, or MCI. Researchers found using specialized brain scans to assess white matter fiber integrity that higher levels of cardiovascular fitness were associated with increased white matter integrity and better cognitive performance among the participants with mild impairment.

  1. Exercise Increases Hippocampus Volume

The hippocampus serves as the hub for learning, memory and emotion in the brain, and it can shrink with age thus adversely affecting verbal memory and learning ability. Regular aerobic exercise seems to increase hippocampal volume in women, who are at greater risk for hippocampal shrinkage than men.

Everyone ranging from children to elderly adults can benefit from regular  exercise. A study was published in 2014 in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience which reported that children having a higher level of aerobic fitness had white matter that was more compact and fibrous, pointing to a healthy brain.

Take heart even if you have not been exercising from the time you were a child. Doctors confirm that it is never too late and you do not have to perform gravity-defying stunts to keep your brain in shape.

When it comes to brain health, moderate aerobic exercise and resistance training can vastly enhance

helps to maintain memory and thinking abilities related to decision making, planning multi-tasking. Both aerobic and resistance training exercises can directly affect brain structure and function.”

Aerobic exercises include swimming, rowing, brisk walking, biking, Zumba and skipping. You should break a sweat but should still be able to carry on a normal conversation. The key is to be consistent. Exercising for about 30 minutes a day can improve cognitive skills and memory within about three and a half months. The key is to just take that first step and then to keep going. So, wake up a bit earlier for that morning jog, park a bit further from your office, offer to carry groceries for your neighbor and you are well on your way to becoming a whole lot smarter. All exercise is good exercise.
